Tonight they showed an old Essendon-Hawthorn game from Round 2, 1984. Hawthorn was up by about 20 points in time on, but Essendon rallied to fall short by a kick.

It was quite entertaining to watch, as the player lists pretty much make up a who's who of today's personalities in the game.

Things that stuck out:

- Guernseys with no sponsors anywhere except for the left shoulder. Looks so much better.

- No 50 metre lines or Carlton Draught cans painted on the field.

- The amount of crap thrown onto the ground; at the Hawthorn cheer squad end there is TP and confetti all over the place.

- The intimacy of the crowd at Windy Hill; it seemed they were literally right on top of the action.

- Umpiring. A ton of 15 metre penalties and holding the ball calls given out, probably as many in this game as whole rounds these days.

As somebody who has only been following the game for a few years, I feel somewhat robbed by it all. I never got to experience Windy Hill as a venue or seeing the Maddens or Danihers or the Dutchman or Garry Foulds or Mark Harvey or Paul Salmon (oh wait, scratch that one :D) in their playing days.

I came in at the wrong time, dammit.

No you didn't. You lived to see the greatest individual season by any team in history. It is only fresh in the mind now, but that season will be a season you will tell your kids and your kids, kids about. It will go down in the annals of history, and you and i lived to witness it. :)

Those days remain so bloody dear to me,haaa, what hope did i have to improve my football going behaviour with examples set week after week by my elders, watching the boys there in the early 70`s and 80`s was out of this world.Nothing shocks me at the football, some wild scenes at Napier St.
The crowd often got the team over the line, pure madness.

Was one of the major reasons that they did bring in the 50 metre rule

I hear ya.
I can identify with all you've said.
I got hooked on footy and did the rounds of the local video shops to get my hands on any AFL tapes they might have. Most only had wrestling or Thugby but one guy pulled two old tapes out from under the counter.....one was the Bombers circa 1994 and the other was back-to-back 88/89 cups. I feel in love with both the late 80's Hawks (go Ratty!) and the Bombers (go Che!)
After those tapes I was a mini expert as a good part of the present coaching and media staff come from those two teams :)
When the season came I recognised everyone!
I too would have loved the tribalism of a Vic Park (take your raincoat Timmy), Moorabin or Windy Hill. BUt feel lucky to have been to three or four really huge MCG crowds ( 90,000 fans going off -wooo-eee) as that might also be a thing of the past.

I got hooked on the footy in about 1981-82, just when school was starting. I remember 1984 quite vividly, and particulalry that game in question. I also recall not being able to beat Hawthorn until that very last game of the year. We were their bunnies until 4:45, 3/4time on GF day 1984.

As much as I liked Windy Hill, it isn't a patch on the superior facilities of the MCG and Colonial.

Windy Hill may have offered something that the MCG can't, but the MCG offers something that Windy Hill can't. It was one of the great decisions in Essendon's history to abandon playing there in late 1991.

If you look at our Windy Hill crowds, in the late 80's early 90's it was clear people didn't like going there anymore.

You mean the next Match of the round game on 7. There on around midnight on Saturdays and play an old game from what they consider to be the match of the round. If they had of considered Carlton/West Coast to be match of the round no doubt they would have played an old one of their matches.

But if thats not what you meant then whoops:o :)

I sat up to watch that game too Stealth. Whoever was on Brereton (Bradbury i think) should have been shot in the head. He kicked 2 goals with nobody within 30 meters of him. Geez Salmon was unstoppable at full forward - he marked everything. I'd forgotten just how well he played there in 84.

Same here John,

Many great memories as a teenager in the early/mid 80's. Who could ever forget the great Rotten Ronnie/ Jacko stoush in the goalsquare at the Napier St. end in '82? The day we clobbered Carlton by 100+ with Mr. Watson going berserk in '85, or the 100 point half-time lead v North later that year. Remember Round 2 1984 v Hawks very clearly, my 15th birthday. Salmon was awesome before the big knee.

I used to stand at the VB can bar, forward pocket, under the scoreboard....like you said...pure madness :p
Where did you stand?

where's wally?

I still think the '85 team was better, just my opinion.
