in the herald sun today on page 117 2008 premiership betting from tab sportsbet has MELBOURNE as the biggest long shot in the whole league!!! Now i dont expect us to win it but give me a break some of these other teams odds are ridiculous:
Geelong $3.30
Port Adelaide $9
Collingwood, Fremantle (yes fremantle how the fk are they here!!) and Hawthorn $10
St. Kilda (without gherig and hamill?) and West Coast $12
Adelaide $15
Sydney $16
Brisbane $21
Carlton $26
Essendon, Kangaroos (how are they on the same line of betting as essendon?), Bulldogs (dito) $35
Richmond $51 (yes ahead of us!!!, you have to be kidding)
Melbourne $61
Wow looking at this betting is amazing as i have highlighted some of mine.
1)Fremantle the equal of collingwood and hawthorn?? give me a break
2)St.KIlda at $12?? they will be lucky to make the finals
3)Brisbane at $21 ill give u the tip add t.j to there team and have a fully fit year from charman they will be good!! Ill tip them for my grand final quinella with geelong, get on board!!!!
4)How the *** is essendon rated the same as the dogs let alone the kangaroos?? Poor old kangas get no respect even with nathan thompson returning next year, put some cash on the roos for the 8!!!!
5) With all the injuries we had this year surely we have to rate ahead of essendon and RICHMOND. What a joke i mean i know they will trim carlton because they got judd and the first pick but for essendon and especially richmond to be priced ahead of us u have got to be kidding!!! Put some cash on us to sneak into the 8 as well, we must be at least $7!!!
What I dont get is how Carlton are shorter than the Roos, and how Essendon are shorter than us and Richmond.

The sportsbet odds are basically just a the greater public's perception of the teams. The general public would have seen Melbourne and thought:
Were terrible this year and they just lost their best player in Johnstone.
Hence no one backing us.

gasby i honestly believe they price themselves so that teams with greater supporter bases can bet on their teams with no risk to them. Hence u see the roos and dogs on the same line as essendon, and richmond ahead of us. One eyed drop kicks that follow these teams will always bet with their heart and not their head.

Yeah agree with you there - it has a lot to do with supporter bases as well. The smaller the base, the less backing the team will have.

i read in the papers today Eagles went from 8.50 to 12 due to Cousins & Judd leaving (this week?)
But melb at $61?!?! That's a bit... much

eagles should be longer than $12, this will scar them for years to come.
add to that embley who is still an injury concern and their so called "superstar" mid-field is no longer. I mean apart from kerr there who do they have left? steinglien and braun are good but u dont have to tag them, they are in serious trouble unless they land cotchin

We're over the odds but we aren't going to win anyway, us to make the 8 sounds alright, and I doubt we will be at $7 considering half the teams have to make it, $4 wouldn't be too bad.

You see this really grinds my gears!!! CARLTON AT $26 bucks! Why? Because they got Chris Judd and because the have pick 1 and will be getting Kruzer!
What a load of BS! We would have probably been at those odds if we had of landed Judd!
Im waiting to see how the Juddernaut goes without Big Cox in the ruck. You can bet your house on Kruzer being Carltons NO.1 ruckman come 08 and although he shows alot of promise will be up against the likes of Cox who is, in my opinion, the best ruckman going around.
Carlton cannot expect an 18 yr old who has never played senior footy to beat the likes of Cox in his first season. It's going to take him a while to get to that level!

I don't see what the big deal is, I'm certainly not rushing out to put money on Melbourne, Carlton or Richmond. Who cares?
Ok to a certain extent odds are determined by bookies. Its obvious Geel and port will be start off short and melb, richmond to start at greater odds. But these odds are mostly determined by how much money is placed on them. not wat betting agenices think clubs will do in 08

Carltons odds would be based on the money that would have been put on them after they signed Juddas. Money wouldn't have really come for anyone else yet.
