BRENDAN Fevola believes Chris Judd will become Carlton's captain in his first year at the club, replacing the sacked Lance Whitnall.
Fevola, speaking at a charity event in Burnie this week, also said the Blues, who managed only four wins this year, were a chance to play in the finals in 2008.
He expressed surprise at Carlton's decision to cut its skipper of the past season — Whitnall — and said forward Josh Kennedy, who was traded to West Coast as part of the Judd deal, would become a "superstar".
Asked who would be Carlton's next player figurehead, Fevola said: "I'd say it'd be Juddy. It'd have to be."
Nick Stevens loomed as the player most likely to become the club's third captain in as many seasons, before the Brownlow medallist midfielder joined the Blues. Judd assumed the skipper's position at the Eagles somewhat reluctantly at the start of 2006, after Ben Cousins lost the post, and then led his former club to a premiership.
Now that Whitnall has been cut and Anthony Koutoufides and Matthew Lappin have retired, Fevola is the longest-serving Carlton player on the club's list.
"It was a bit of a shock," Fevola said of Whitnall's axing. "I hope another club picks him up. He could hold down full-forward quite easily and probably kick 50 to 60 goals."
That brings a tear to my eye :mad:
Fev's comments are never subtle. JK was a huge loss. I actually think his development will go backwards at Weagleland, because they have a shocking KP forward development record for some reason. Crazy making Judd captain in his first year. He clearly doesn't want it, and quite rightly wants to earn the respect of his team-mates. Stevens is a great on-field leader, and wants the job. Simmo's attitude last year was enough to convince me he deserved the VC job. :)

Don't hold much credence to Fev's opinions but I think it'll be Stevens hands down. As you said Parrot, Juddy doesn't want it and they won't force it on him.

wow. fevola said something that wasn't completely stupid.
100% agree with him on everything he said except on judd getting captaincy.

Judd and Stevo for Co-Captains. ;)
Judd and Stevo for Co-Captains. ;)
I really hate the co-captain concept. It just sends a weak statement IMO. There should only be one leader at the top. Distributing that responsibility amoung several players is just shirking responsibility IMO. :)

the only way i would condone co captains if you had 3. and had one backman. one forward and one midfielder.

I've never been a fan Parrot, but this would probably be the best time to implement it. We have two great leaders - they both deserve it.
Last year we had a 'leadership group' or 10 or so. Have that cut down greatly, and have two guys in Stevo and Judd teaching the younger guys how to go about their footy.

Judd can and will do this without being "named" captain.
He doesn't want to do the media thing, press conferences etc. Not his thing.
He will contribute as a leader in his own way without being the "figurehead" of the club.
Stevo wants this job.......and wants it badly.
My tip is for Stevens to lead the club as well. He should have been given the role 12 months ago, when Whitnall took over as captain.

Fev shooting off again, I hope he is wrong.
Let Judd come to the club and concentrate on getting a kick. Let Stevo take the reins with trusty lieutenants in Simmo, Murph and Waite.

I knew someone would say that - however, he can bring more to the table if he was named Co-captain of the club.
He was captain at the Eagles, so i don't see how the media in terms of press conferences will change down here. The press are all over the two teams up there in the west.
Stevo wants it, and it would be a good choice. I never said i'd have Judd ahead of Stevo in the pecking order. However, it seems fitting to have both of those men as captains of our club due to the leadership abilities they possess.
It would be wrong to suggest that a player - especially one in the mold of Judd - would not want to take up the opportunity of being captain of a football club. If it was given to him, i dare say he would take it.

i wonder where you got that one from ;)
the forward, mid and backman captaincy really works,
then the responsibility isnt really shirted off, its shared around
less pressure on everyone, and if its a young captain, it relates moreso

The best player in the AFL, i'd say he should be the perfect choice really. Also a premiership Captain, yeah i can see heaps of Carlton players with those credentials. Do it BLUES!
