View Full Version : Joey Anderson in 2008

Joey is one of the players I'm expecting to have a big 2008 and step up into a back pocket next year.

With his speed and aggression at the man and the ball, I think he could be the tough defender we need and he will release Walker and Gibbs from playing down back. Ando's aggression when he gave Sherman a huge hip and shoulder was terrific to see even though he was in the clear and free of his man.

Anderson will go down as a bargain after we picked him up at pick 67.

I wouldn't swap him for Westhoff if you paid me.

Does anyone else think Ando could move up the ground if he improves his kicking and play as a tagger/wingman in the next few years?

Anderson did a good job on Eagleton this year and the coaches let him follow his man into the middle in a great show of faith. Joey didn't look out of the place in the game against Brisbane with his desperation and one percenters in the middle which earned him a free kick against Sherman. I feel he has the speed, size and right temperament to play onball if he can improve his endurance and kicking. His results at draft camp where impressive and could translate to playing on the ball down the track.
A 2.98sec 20m sprint time at the NAB AFL Draft Camp, coupled with a 14.4 Beep Test show a great speed/endurance combination. A ranking in the top 5% of the Repeat Sprint Test further highlights his speed endurance capabilities.
I think he and Benjamin have more upside than Davey who debuted as a 23 year old and a ready made player.

Pace and skill is important, but give me a player who go as hard Walker, Selwood or Murphy in contests ahead of skilled front runners anyday of the week(we have Houlihan). The Cats showed up the Power and the Pies in the finals in this department and that gave them the edge at the end of the day in the preliminary final. Pendlebury, Pearce and Thomas didn't get a sniff in the finals against the Cats who all went in hard and would die for their team.

This post I found on TC about Ando's game in the NTFL Grand Final gives me cause for optimism.
For what its worth...

I lived in Darwin for the first half of this year. I'm a lecturer, and one of my students was a wingman who had played for a few clubs up there including Darwin and Nightcliff, so the guy was pretty familiar with many of the players.

According to him, the personal view among the players in the NT league was that Anderson was a more complete footballer at the same age than was Davey. This was based on an ability to be quick, attacking, and skilful, and also a very, very sound defensive game. The feeling in NT circles was that Davey did not have that defensive side to his game at the same age.

This guy knew Joe at a reasonable level, and claimed he was very coachable and willing to learn.

The other thing to mention is (and NT Blue can probably back me up on this) - but Anderson played a great Grand Final up there. He tagged Culpitt who had been awarded best player in the League, and took him right out of the game. It was a surprise that Darwin won, and Anderson played no small role in the victory. Not only did he shut Culpitt down, he also did some nice attacking things himself.

Having seen a tiny bit of NT Footy (well worth watching by the way - Jetstar flies cheap to Darwin these days. Take yourself up for a week of relaxation in January and be sure to catch some games. They usually play a double or triple header at Mararra Oval on each Saturday - a really top day of footy), it is unusual to see a guy who is as well rounded as Anderson. The league is typified by speed and high skills, but there is little defensive application. It is a 'pure' attacking game of footy.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing Anderson at Carlton - and hope he plays many years for the Blues!
Your thoughts?

How good are his skills?

I'm really hoping he can step up and establish himself as a backpocket/half back by the end of year, one who can take out dangerous opposition small forwards out of the game and burst out of defense himself.

Hopefully he can do stuff like this for the blues. I think you can guess whic one Joey is.

Definate BP player... lets not get too excited though, the statistic for late draft picks arent fantastic.

Wouldnt it be fantastic if he could mirror Carrazzo's career to a degree. Start BP, learn the smarts to kill small forwards, use that knowledge to rip it up, in and under through the midfield.

He is EXACTLY what the Carlton defense has lacked a small fast running BP defender. Expect him to do well next season. If Joey could break even next season, that would be fantastic.

hasnt handled the big stage aswell as other first year players. i remember one game i was watching , mighta been against the lions . he got the ball then ran back into traffic and lost it. this was late in the game aswell. was as if he paniced

looks hard and tough and not afraid to go at the ball , but what your saying is youd rather a tough guy with no finishing skills over a guy that can go in semi hard and can hit someone on the chest all day.

pies matched the cats with hardness in the final if you bothered to watch. go youtube maxwells tackle on rooke

He'll also be one that I will be keeping my eye on in 2008. Could really make the BP his own next year, and from what I have heard, really has the work ethis and desire to give himself every chance to make it at AFL level.

I like Joey as a player, he gives us a bit of grunt down back and it was a shame he kept twanging the hammies. I hope thats not a sign of things to come with the hammies though. Its good to have a genuine backman rather tahn trying to get on-ballers to play down there. Big thumbs up for Joey in 2008. :thumbsu:

If you watch the game he played against Eagleton he absolutely cleaned him up. As soon as he did his hammy, eagleton began getting more of the ball. The thing I loved most was joey stuck to eagleton like a glove. If joey doesn't play BP, he could well be the tagger we're after.

I'm hoping that he makes it - he can potentially fill that BP role, freeing up Walker, Gibbs, Houlihan into more attacking positions. I think he has potential - personally, I don't see him going into the midfield, b/c we need a specialised back pocket and hopefully he's the man to do that. I recall him getting at least one soft tissue injury - might have been two? Hopefully he has more luck than Hartlett in that regard.

I remember Joey Anderson's game V Bulldogs this year. He was awesome, and I thought at the time that this was his breakthrough game. The hamstring injury could not have happened at a worse time. Huge potential. Excellent skills, very fast, and attacks the ball hard. Will be awesome rebounding off the half back flank. Who knows, he might develop into a midfielder one day. Many great midfielders started off in defence. :)

Still needs to work on those.

Let's hope he becomes more aggressive at the ball, then my nickname of "Angry" will stick.

He is all that, but he aint small!!! he is about 188cm. he plays on the 'hard to match up on forward' perhaps in a similar vein to archer...can play on talls/smalls.

He can play on smalls much better than talls due to his pace. We haven't had a smallish defender since Teague and he was terribly slow.

Agree

Future gun.

Slotted right in and looked at home at 18 years of age.

Impressive size and pace.

I recall the passage of play.

The Lions owned the corridor for that entire game.

Joey was heavily outnumbered and still won the ball, ran it out of the pack and slammed it on the boot under a lot of pressure. The ball scuttled along the ground to the next pack of Brisbane players. Joey continued the chase and not long after the ball arrived at the next pack of Brisbane players, Joey hit that pack, won the ball out and again got it going along the ground, chased it down again to another pack of Brisbane players and held it up and managed to create a stoppage.

You're right, shocking effort and composure for an 18yo

He did his hammy tackling Eagleton as he was running into goals with the ball, it was a sensational goal saving tackle!!

hes a real good mate of mine - he played wicked in the grand final, chopped Culpitt up - would have got best on ground if it wasnt for darryl white playing a blinder - joey still deserved BOG over White IMHO.

Will be a solid player.

Started off slowly, but played exceptionally well vs the Bulldogs. Was really starting to find his feet-terribly disappointing to see him get injured.

For mine, he should be in our starting 18 next year, playing out of a back pocket. Has the height, work ethic and attitude to forge a reasonable career for himself. Won't be a star, but hopefully will be able to cement his spot in the team. I could definitely see him eventually being a tagger, and a defender able to take the smaller forwards who seem to always cut us apart.

Could very well be a steal in the draft considering how late we took him.

Looking forward to seeing him back out there in the NAB Cup, and hopefully come round 1 next year.
