So far this season I've been to day one of the NSW Sheffield Shield (no, it's not the Pura Cup) game and most of today's Ford Ranger Cup game against Tassie.

Against NSW, I only saw us bowl. Magoffin was brilliant, the only reason he didn't get more wickets was they weren't good enough to nick him. Bowled pearler after pearler. Heal didn't seem to be bowling to a plan and was pretty ineffective as a result. Edmondson worked hard and was the only one who realised he needed to attack the stumps of the NSW tail end. He tired quickly, but that was understandable as he bowls quite quickly. Grew a leg when we took the new ball. Dorey and Bandy both did well but went off injured after only a few overs. We really let them off after lunch that day, we had them on the ropes and didn't finish the job.

Today, I only saw us bowl about 10 overs and then the whole batting innings. Ervine looks to be a shadow of the man who threatened to dismantle Australia a few years earlier. Didn't bowl well while I was there. Magoffin only got 5 overs for the whole innings? Unbelievable. Wates and McLauchlin are good depth in the squad but I wouldn't expect either to challenge for a first 11 spot when Magoffin, Edmondson and Dorey are fit. Didn't see anyone else bowl, but Heal was man of the match with 2/18 off 10, so must've been good. Voges also got around 3/30 from his 10.

Ronchi was hard to gauge. He was uncomfortable to start with against Griffith and just missed the edge a few times with unconvincing defensive shots. It made him look like he was struggling, but then he'd get a bad ball and absolutely obliterate it. Very entertaining stuff. Ended up with 27 off not many. At the other end, Langer was patient. I think he was on 4 when Ronchi went . He and Marsh both took a while to get the eye in, defending the good ones but not finding the gaps when they went after the bad ones. Once they got to 20 odd they looked good and started to get some better timing. Once they got to about 35 each, they went ballistic. Langer must've taken around 20 from one of the overs with some big hits over midwicket. Marsh followed suit, but was a little more subdued. Marsh ended up falling for 60 odd trying to hit one into the river. Top edge was well taken. Enter Luke Pomersbach, surprisingly elevated in front of Voges. Langer and Marsh had crossed so he played out a few balls before Pomersbach got on strike. When he did, he proceeded to deposit the ball into the second tier of the Lillee Marsh stand! Biggest hit of the day. He was just out there to tee off, the next one went for four and the over ended. Langer hit the winning runs next over. Aside from some early nerves from the top 3, we looked good with the bat today. It helped that we were only chasing 182 for the win, but none the less...

Just got back from having a look at the WA 2nd XI match, some good batting from former Test player Martin Love. Bowling is pretty good, been impressed with C.Hansberry, gets a lot of flight and dip. McLauchlan swears about 3 times every time he goes for runs.

It's funny you should say that, I don't buy anything with a Pura label on it for the same reason. I know of others who've done the same, I wonder if their sales actually went down after they hijacked our great competition? Regardless, like you I'm happy just to hand out my little bit of 'up yours' every time I go shopping.

It's a bit harsh to dump on PURA, they're pumping some money into our first class comp, we should be behind them. The people you should be pissed at is Cricket Australia for selling the history. Perhaps they could have called the comp The PURA Sheffield Shield or something of that ilk.
I was just as pissed by the name change also btw.
Warriors off to their customary slow start in the 4 dayers. sigh.

Yeah I cant be upset with Pura, without the money they have put into the comp it might be in some serious trouble. For that money they get good exposure from the name. I sometimes call it Sheffield Shield, sometimes Pura Cup.

Problem for SA is Adelaide is a batsmens paradise, it gets the batsmen overconfident and the bowlers totally shagged out. IMHO. Is Dizzy going for another gallop this year?

Bradesmaen
23 Oct 2007, 20:39
Dizzy is only 32, he's got 5 years left.

Adelaide isn't that much of a paradise for Batsmen.. its just that our batsmen are awful and have no confidence... I mean look at Borgas. He made three ducks in his three innings last week.

Hmmm. By the look of the scorecard, I'd grade today as a C+. Sent in to bat to be 9/272 at stumps. Pomersbach out for 89. Disappointing that nearly everyone got a start and didn't go on with it, barring Pomersbach. If Wates and Inness could somehow carry us to 300 I would say we did quite well owing to the fact we were sent in.

Going to need some quick wickets once we get to bowl tomorrow. I've never seen Kelly bowl, don't rate Inness and Wates is handy occasionally. Personally I would've been extremely tempted to play both Hogg and Heal instead of the typical 3 quicks and a spinner attack. I think Heal would be more dangerous than our 5th, 6th and 7th best pace bowlers (where's McLauchlan?)

Might need a bit of luck.

Brilliant. 1/81 is pretty good after a great performance by the bowlers. Getting them all out for 114 is magnificent. Happy that Inness made my post last night look stupid. The only disappointment was JL getting run out for 49 off the last ball of the day.

Couldn't help but notice that Heal claimed the wickets of Mahela Jayawardene, Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Attapattu in Adelaide. The standout for the Chairman's XI with 3/50.

I am not so sure Marsh wil be left out. We are in the enviable position of having too many in form players and the hard decision is who to leave out not so much who to put in. I would have thought that Bandy would be on the verge of non selection with only 7 runs and 7 overs to his name in our win over Qld. North can bowl his spin if another bowler is required and Marsh can drop down the order if required. We also have Edmonson ,Dorey,McLauchlan,Ervine and Gillies on the sidelines as capable bowling options.

Hate to put the mockers on but for a change WA cricket looks in pretty good shape.:thumbsu:

North
Pommers
Voges
Ronchi
Hogg/Heal
Dorey
Inness

Yeah I think Voges would make the perfect number 6 in that lineup. Probably need a steady batter down there if we do get into trouble. Edo shouldnt come back unless there are injuries, Inness and Dorey are much better prospects.

On a side note, if Rogers doesnt pull up for Wednesdays one day match who do you think will come into the side? My money is on either Davis or Droppa.

As I said selection is getting harder, but I think Wates would come in and Bandy retain his spot for the one dayer which means Marsh,Voges or Pommers to open with JL. It would be good to see one of the two you have mentioned get a run though, there may not be many chances for the guys on the fringe of the main group this year.

Very selfish by those two. Especially when we have Dorey, North and Rogers already out. This really hurts the team (for the upcoming FR Cup game we've named 3 batsmen and 5 all rounders!) and I hope they learn their lesson.

We might even get rolled by the Redbacks in the FR Cup game this week. Oh the shame!

Pomers is an idiot, always has been. Shame given that he's got an excellent talent because he is going to piss it all on the wall and ruin his chances of going to the international scene if he doesn't pull his finger in. I played mens softball against him for a few years and his parents ran a bar for that softball association for many years.

Well this game against SA is a must win match after the shock loss to the Bulls. Droppa will come in for his debut, has been in amazing form in club cricket. One of Langer or Ronchi will need to ton up if we bat first. Voges also could use some runs.

What is more of a concern is that Pommers is my dream team skipper.

Good luck to Droppa he fully deserves his chance after a mountain of runs at grade level and I would think Ervine needs to perform to keep his spot if not his contract for next year, he hasn't really shown the form at this level that the WACA were hoping for when he was signed.

Good on him too, at least there is some silver lining to the antics of Marsh and Pomersbach. 305 is a good total with those two in form bats out of the lineup.

I thought it strange to have Edmondson as 12th man for this match, maybe its just to give McLauchlan a run as an insight to the Sheffield shield match?

Dead right, with North on the sidelines as well, Marsh will have to score a truckload at grade level to have a chance. Overall we are in good shape with pressure on for spots all through the playing 12 :thumbsu:

We still lost despite getting a big total. Sigh. Magoffin got tonked for once! He had to find out sooner or later what it's like to have a batsman hit your bowling. Well done by Ervine, too. I'm still skeptical about his bowling but he can obviously bat a bit. Now he just has to play like that more often.
