The story is about Reid having the lousy task of being the messenger to deliver the bullet to the soon to be delisted players.
The part I was surprised at was where it says there is a 7 man committee that has the usual suspects, PLUS Finance Manager Grant Rutherford.
I do not know if this is common practice throughout the AFL, but to me I would hate to think that finances rather than footy ability is dictating the composition of the club's list.
IMO the Finance Manager should be given the playing list, and then asked, how to make this list fit into the salary cap.
Any thoughts on this?

I would think that finances have to form a part of any final decision - it is a business, and there is a salary cap. Sometimes hard decisions have to be made and might unfortunately come down to the bottom line. Can't be making decisions to keep players if you haven't got room under the cap.

I would think it's a combination of both. Does a player's ability warrant the finances afforded to keeping him on the list? If not, is said player's output equal (or at least potentially) to that of a younger player's ability but at a smaller price?

Surely you're not that naive Asgardian?!
See Steven King/Charlie Gardiner/Henry Playfair/Jude Bolton/Adam Schneider/Sean Dempster ;)
Unfortunate, yes, but ofcorse it is common practice! Football is a strict business nowadays! Loyalty is well and truly on its knees, being read its last rights.

It's not unusual for Finance / Business Managers to sit in on these sorts of committees - and more generally committees that are core to the nature of the business, but not necessarily core to the Finance / Business Managers skill set.
There are often contractual and prudential management issues that need to be adressed and often the person in this role has responsibility for those. Toss in the need for some financial modelling and cashflow projections - it's much easier for the person responsible for finance and budgetting to hear things first hand rather than after the fact.

Very well explained, MD. :thumbsu:
Even Asgardian has a rough show of understanding that. :)

Who ever heard of a squad list being subject to the limits of the salary cap! Well, I never........
There is never a decision made at any AFL club where finance isnt considered.
Ridiculously stupid thread.

Not to be rude - but are you REALLY this naive, or were you looking to pick a fight? OF COURSE salary cap issues will impact a list's makeup.

That goes without saying
We all know the salary cap is there to stop any club from stacking their own list.
I just figured that you all could have delved a little deeper than superficial salary cap comments.
My mistake, people here prefer to .............. well it need not be said.
