A Monday morning deserves a little bit of trivia to help us get going. Below are a few questions on Carlton recruiting Brownlow Medallists from other clubs, a la Chris Judd, with a link to a Blueseum article at the bottom that should have most of the answers:
1. Chris Judd is the third Brownlow Medallist from another Club recruited by the Blues. Can you name the other two?
Hint: One in the late 1970's, the other in the Early 1990's
2. Can you name the Clubs at which each of these players won their original Brownlow?
3. The Brownlow Medallist recruited in the early 1990's also won another Brownlow at Carlton. In which year?
4. Carlton gave up 3 players to 2 different Clubs in order to secure the Brownlow Medallist at question 3. Can you name the 3 players?
5. Can you name the State of Origin for each of the 3 players?
Hint: each one came from a different state
6. One of these players played at AFL level for 4 different clubs, including Carlton. Can you name the other 3 Clubs?
7. The player at question 3 won a Premiership at Carlton. The Blues picked up 2 Premiership Players in the same off-season as this player. Can you name the 2 other players?
Hint: One was a forward; the other a small defender / tagger. Both had played AFL football for other Clubs.
8. Another 100 gamer at Carlton was picked up in that same off-season, but did not play in the 1995 Premiership. Who was he?
9. In relation to the player at question 8, can you name the 1987 Premiership Player that Carlton gave up to secure him?
10. Despite the heavy trading, Carlton still utilised 7 draft picks. Only two of these players played senior games for Carlton - one is listed as a Premiership Player at Question 7. The other played in the 1993 Grand Final but never played in a Premiership. Can you name him?

1. Chris Judd is the third Brownlow Medallist from another Club recruited by the Blues. Can you name the other two?
Greg Williams and Ian Stewart (?) ... as coach anyway. Are we specifying player?
2. Can you name the Clubs at which each of these players won their original Brownlow?Williams - Sydney. Stewart - St Kilda and Richmond
3. The Brownlow Medallist recruited in the early 1990's also won another Brownlow at Carlton. In which year?
1994
4. Carlton gave up 3 players to 2 different Clubs in order to secure the Brownlow Medallist at question 3. Can you name the 3 players?
Simon Minton-Connell, Sartori and Matthews
5. Can you name the State of Origin for each of the 3 players?
Hint: each one came from a different state
Mintie was Tasmanian, Sartori obviously WA, Matthews no idea, probably Victorian.
6. One of these players played at AFL level for 4 different clubs, including Carlton. Can you name the other 3 Clubs?Mintie again, Sydney, Dogs, Hawthorn
7. The player at question 3 won a Premiership at Carlton. The Blues picked up 2 Premiership Players in the same off-season as this player. Can you name the 2 other players?
Hint: One was a forward; the other a small defender / tagger. Both had played AFL football for other Clubs.
Duke of Earl was a big one I remember. Matty Hogg the other.
8. Another 100 gamer at Carlton was picked up in that same off-season, but did not play in the 1995 Premiership. Who was he?
Not off the top of my head.
9. In relation to the player at question 8, can you name the 1987 Premiership Player that Carlton gave up to secure him?Ah got it now. Richard Dennis went to the Roos (peeved me off mightily), so the above player would be Ronnie DeIulio.
10. Despite the heavy trading, Carlton still utilised 7 draft picks. Only two of these players played senior games for Carlton - one is listed as a Premiership Player at Question 7. The other played in the 1993 Grand Final but never played in a Premiership. Can you name him?
Hoggy and absolutely no idea.

Impressive effort.
There was another player recruited by Carlton in the late 1970's who had won a Brownlow elsewhere. Ian Stewart is not what I had intended with the question.
In relation to the second player for Question 10, here's a hint:
He wore #9.
Johnny Utah #9

#9 - Brett Sholl. Not a bad player there for a few seasons. He came into my work a couple of years ago as a sales rep or something. Still looked in pretty good shape.

Maligned for his 1993 GF output, but he wasn't alone on that day...

Ashley Matthews was from our local zone and I think his junior club was Mooroolbark up near Lilydale (cousin of Sydneys Ben Matthews).

You are welcome - but it's our job.
All answers now correct, well done. Peter Bedford was indeed the first Brownlow Medallist recruited to Carlton, followed by Williams and now Judd. 1991 proved a fruitful year for the Blues with Hogg, Spalding and De Iulio all joining Williams, with Sholl showing some promise over 1992-1994.
We would lose Minton-Connell, Matthews (Ashley) and Sartori for Williams - originally Kappler was coming to the Blues but the Swans insisted on him as part of the trade for Williams. Dennis was traded to North for De Iulio.

Ron De Iulio, what a little gun he was.
Just a personal Ron memory. We were playing the Crows at Optus Oval in the mid 90's, Ron had played in the 2's game earlier. A crow fan was mouthing off and Ron all of a sudden jumped up and punched him in the head. The Heatley Stand went crazy and Ron was taken down the stairs and out of sight very quickly. Was anyone else there and can remember seeing, it was sensational!
