why not have it a week after camp or something instead of making the young kids, clubs and fans wait till end on november

Probably coz many of 17-18 year olds that are drafted are doing year 12 and have exams in November so draft is after exams finish...

Year 12 Exams!

Its held after those to avoid distraction during an important two or three weeks in their education.

Exams, plus the fact that clubs have to lodge their delistments, rookie elevations, cuts and so forth so the afl knows the rosters spots the team will have thus limiting their draft picks if need be.

It's positioned there to give us something to do instead of watching the boring Election Day coverage.

No, it was actually John Howard finally doing something right for the AFL fans.

Same reason that Draft Camp is held during school holidays. ;)

otherwise there would be too many things on for them, they are much better finishing their education without the distraction.
