Just a comparison of a few players
Steven Summerton 5th feb 1988 175cm 74kg
Levi Greenwood 19th feb 1989 181cm 91kg
Brad Ebert 2nd apr 1990 187cm 86kg

This year
Ebert played 5 League games averaging 19 disposals a game (0 goals)
Greenwood played 11 League games in 2007 averaging 17.4 disposals a game (2 goals)
Summerton played all 23 League games averaging 21.1 disposals a game

All 3 got nominated for the sanfls version of the rising star award(summerton won the award)
Ebert got no magarey medal votes, Greenwood got one and Summerton got 6.

Greenwood got best player for SA at under 18 championships while Ebert was captain and the only South Australian to make the all australian under 18 team.

Does Eberts age make him that much better a prospect than Greenwood and Summerton? And at 22 is Magarey Medallist James Allan too old to be picked?

I watched virtually every game this year at the magpies and Ebert will definately be the better footballer.

Ebert is built perfectly for footballer and is all class.

Greenwood is just a hard worker and his height and foot skills may let him down but will be a very good footballer.

Summerton will not get drafted i don't think, even though he had a lot of the ball this year most of that was early in the season when he went unnoticed and he is very slow and kicks the ball straight up in the air and does not hit many targets.

It's the same reason that Fortunato Caruso won two Morrish medals and didn't even get looked at in the rookie draft, while Tom Williams got drafted at #6 overall having only played a handful of games of footy in his life.

It's all about long-term potential. Ebert is classier than Greenwood and Summerton, and being younger, you can forgive his shorter resume.

Summerton is too short, too slow and lacks the skills needed to be an AFL football player, which is why he likely won't get looked at.

There are different requirements at different levels of football - Summerton might be okay at SANFL level, but what does he do at AFL level when every single player on the opposition team is taller, faster, stronger and classier than he is? The fact is, most AFL midfielders would rack up possessions in the SANFL, WAFL or VFL at the same rate that a guy like Summerton does, but most of them possess far superior physical attributes, meaning that when he is matched up against them, they will dominate him.
