Seems like some other users are doing it, so might as well start up a D Grade poll for 2008.
What are our thoughts on the (very) early favouritism for 2008 and comments about the teams ?

outrageous - Jascave will be shattered!
I'll back the districts in for a three-peat, still plenty of room for improvement from this young list. Won't get too cocky in October 2007 though!

Reds have lost a lot of experience, will most likely lose players after a shocking 2007, and haven't got a coach yet, from the word around the traps. It's only October though so writing them off might be premature.
I like Old Mentonians, but 2008 could be a one of the closest in years. Reds to scrape into 4th.
Its exciting times down at SMD with the new coach. Should be good but if he really thinks pre season starts before January, tell him he's dreamin.

I hope the playing list I handed over to Killer today didn't include BF user names. Could be a long summer for some:D

Dont tell me there will be a big footy censorship for SMD like Hoppers Crossing enforced on their players 2 years ago.

Hope not! I'll have to take up smoking again to fill in my day. Or do some work! Not likely.

No doubt OMs should start favorite at this very early juncture, they were desperately unlucky to miss out on promotion last season. I'd also expect BT to improve and push for a top 2 berth. Others above them in the season just finished may slide in the process. Clearly, given the season is over 6 months away, this is all with a grain of salt.
One things for sure, myself, Mappa, GWH and CB will all be at pains to point out that there have been a couple of Reds' imposters pumping up the club's tyres over the past couple of seasons.
No reason whatsoever to expect an immediate return to the higher grade at BSO - it will require lots of hard work and plenty of youngsters will be getting opportunities.
Whilst most things at this time of the year are pure speculation, one thing is a dead certainty Frase. The bus trip down to play the Pirates is something not to be missed.
On the field..... who knows. There's talk of players coming back, players leaving, players not knowing what they're doing. There's plenty of talk. Look for the Reds to just go about their business in 2008, with no fanfare and no hype from so-called supporters (read: imposters). I'm sure it'll all kick off on the right note next Wednesday at the players meeting.

Old Mentonians and then daylight in 2008. Prahran and Old Geelong will be right up there, and the two unknown quantities will be Fitzroy and South Melbourne. One has come down, the other up and how they deal with it will be an interesting one to see.

Spoke to a Pharan player a couple of weeks ago and he said to me no side will get close to them as they are that good. Im not making that up either.
Sth Melb started training on Wed night with a run around the lake. Early gospel award goes to Jack Cronan (remember the name) for locking himself out of his car while it was still running.
The Fitzroy Reds are very pleased to announce the appointment of James Taylor as Senior Coach for 2008.
James is a club legend at the Montmorency Football Club, having captained the club, playing 200+ games and being named in their Team of the Century. He brings coaching experience from Montmorency, and the Northern Knights Development Squad, and playing experience from AFL Under 19s at Collingwood, and reserves football at St Kilda
The Reds welcome James to Brunswick Street and wish him every success for 2008 and beyond.

Great to see the Reds appoint somebody from outside of the VAFA world, will hopefully create a buzz arould the club. Let's hope his coaching is as successful as his music. How sweet it is....... :D

Somehow i don't think you can ever be over losing a Grand Final.....Let alone lsoing one when you are up by 66 points at 3/4 time
Those sort of losses can't be easily covered...especially when you have to stay in the same division to eventually win one
Why can't Fitzroy Reds ever move out of a divison in which they have constantly been one of the better sides......is it that they are a little worried that they maybe won't make the GF if they moved up and actually tried to better there U 19's.....Premierships are great, but not if they have to be won in the same divsion year in year out, that is the whole point of the VAFA setup, that once you achieve a GF berth in one grade you move up and try and better your club by moving up the next grade.
Well see if they make the move to Division 3 19's next year....although i won't be holding my breath.

now Westy, this has been covered before, but for those of you that are a little slow......................the Reds REQUESTED to go UP a grade in 2007 and were in SECTION 3 up until about 2 weeks before the start of the year, after several teams, one being BT were unable to field sides in North. The Reds only then were dropped back to North to make up the numbers. IT WASN'T OUR CHOICE TO STAY IN NORTH. WE WILL BE IN NORTH ONE NEXT YEAR. Now, read carefully because I may well confuse you here................there is no more section 3 next year, there is Premier section, North 1, North 2, South 1 and South 2. So, (still with me pal?,) the Reds will effectively GO UP 2 sections, and are happy to do so. (Did I mention we WILL be fielding 2 teams in '08?) That's not "may be" but definitely fielding two sides. So please don't get confused when you see the Reds dominating North section next year, we will be in the higher grade as well. Does that make you feel better buddy?

Again in 2006 you finished on top but unfortunately for yourselves stumbled at the final hurdle in Red Section......And what do we see again you don't make the jump up to the next grade

Out of 90 people you would think you could find 22 half decent footballers..

Would be interesting to know how many players from that under 19 GF would be expected to play seniors in 2008 for both sides? I would think that if it were 3 or 4 or 5 per side, that would be a really positive sign for both clubs. Both need strong feeder (junior) teams to push up the ladder.
Extraordinary result aside, once you are in the seniors, under 19 results of 2 years ago have an ever diminishing relevance...

I'm new to the club and i can see why. Like a lot of clubs teams fall away after the top 6 or so player, if they gt hurt during the year its hard to find replacements that will stand up week in week out.
We've picked up a few players (myself inc.) some of us have played a much higher level of footy & judging by the numbers (and how we're lookin) at pre-season this early I think we'll be very hard to beat.

At this level of football it is sometimes harder for the players who have played a higher level of footy to adjust. At higher levels you get into the right spot you get the ball where at times at this level you wont get it.
Every side thinks they will be hard to beat this time of the year but we will see at about round 6 or 7 who is a serious threat or not.

Round 6 doesn't give you much. Rovers were written off at 2-4 by round 6 in 2007 and went into the GF as favourites. Wait til you've played everyone at least once before you start spruiking.

they would be next in line, but are just too old. They dont have many young players and I think run out of legs late in the season. They might prove me wrong but I think the younger teams will be to fit this year on fast grounds. South, Reds, Bullen, OM's, all based around young players.
OG's are a team that have been like OM's strong in the reserves, I think they might be the team that stuns everyone.

Can't agree with that. They lost 1 game at home all year. Don't think they were so old that they'll drop off in 2008.
And OG's won't be a "stun" to us if they come good. Arguably the best side we played in the H&A season.
OM's would have to be the early frontrunners. Especially if Boris The Blade can get himself right for the full season.

They had four players over 28 in the side that lost in the finals to Hampton.

All I'm saying is I think you will find they will fall at the waist side again. Because they rely on older players a lot more then other clubs.

It would be great if JL decided to come to the districts but you know there is no chance of that. I dont think Clarkey or Johnny Ellis would let that happen. He could get too much money from other places to come back just yet.

Ugly - whilst you're over there on the streets of Miami, surely you can sound out Lieutenant Horatio Caine, and see if he can:
1. solve the case of the replacement BT coach; and
2. send over that rather tidy Natalia Boa Vista to join the VAFA board.

Can confirm appointment of David Matthews as coach of Bulleen Templestowe. He had 3 very successful seasons at Ormond & 2 very succesful seasons at Uni Blues before that. Congratulations to Bulleen Temp on their choice. You can expect nothing less than total committment from him.

Big call considering the names who were apparently interviewed.
Nice get. Quality coach and quality individual.

This may be out of line (hopefully not) but anyone care to mention those fellas who were pipped by Dave for the coveted B-T senior gig?

the one I spoke to coached A grade very recently. And you would all know his name.
That aside, the decision has been made so its not really appropriate to air any other names. Most of what is posted on this thread would be heresay anyway.
Ants have made a good call.
not quite rite

When will Fitzroy Reds be letting the bigfooty forum know who missed out on its senior coaching job? Doubt anyone who REALLY is in the know at BT will be saying much. Its probably not appropriate as the people who were interviewed will have ties with other clubs. Its fun to speculate though and I have already named a few people who I think would have been sounded out.

Well, if it helps - I missed out on the senior gig. :( :p
Fair enough - it's just a slow couple of months we're in the midst of thus far, and I'd rather talk about other clubs than my own. :D

Bad luck Scribe. Maybe next time.
What's all this stuff about a rivalry round?

Thanks - but I didn't actually put in for it. ;)
As for Rivalry Round, I think its a VAFA media beat up designed to cash in on the absence of AFL footy on 10/5. Rivalries within the VAFA abound, but they can often be based on the most tenuous premises.
I personally am looking forward to the return of the Latte Cup between Prahran and Fitzroy. Rather partial to the extract of coffee beans I am.
To put and end to all the rumors I can confirm that I did not apply for the BT, Fitzroy or South Melbourne senior jobs.
We all know coaching the dew kickers is where it's at!

Hey Conduct,
I didn't realise you played Finals against OE in '99.
Did you win?

Here is a rumour... is it true that David Teasdale is going to play for Old Mentone this year???
can anyone confirm this?

Why would be great for d1 if Teasdale plays for OM's but would like to see paperwork lodged with VAFA. Other rumours include him playing with Hampton Rovers and Beaumauris.
Any chance of Port Adelaide rookie Nathan Batsanis returning to BT next year?

Surely u would remember:
C U: "Can anyone from Old Ess confirm if the Leask playing now was the one playing in 1999? How old would he be?"
C U: "Thanks Wonderful. Played against him in a final in 99 (and another guy Podger I think). Top bloke. Was just interested to know if it was the same guy coz I didn't realise he was so young back then. Cheers."
C U: "Last time I played in D1 there were 2 full-forwards (Bomber James from BT and A Rosen from Ajax) who both kicked over 100 goals, and both lined up in the GF opposite each other. Now thats "some very good full forwards"!..

Have not been on in a while. Very slow so far boys. Lets start talking about teams and thoughts on next year. New recruits. Not rumours actuall signings.
South Districts have not got a few at this stage. tHere little forward pocket Jack Cronan back and firing after an injury riddled year he is looking for a massive year and expect Dean Phillips to have a big year. Also a chance for a few young Port Colts players to come across but thats in its early stages.
I think the districts will be around the 4 this year.

yeah 99 or 2000, something like that would be right..and your point would be what?
Do you think all of the D1 thread are interested in the fact that about a year ago I asked someone from OE if Leask is still playing? Wow. I must be dealing with a brain surgeon here. Move on pal. please, get over yourself.

Still early, Big Deal...but i tend to agree. The last few seasons have seen teams carrying their momentum through D1 , and playing finals (even getting promoted). SMD definitely have the momentum.
Also, we've seen the relegated teams tending to struggle in D1 (Banyule, Therry, Parade). It will be interesting to see if the Reds can reverse this recent trend.

We'll be doing our best to reverse that trend and are aiming to make the finals. That's about as wild as the statements will get from the BSO, which will make a nice change from some BigFooty posts in 2007 !!
I would certainly be hoping our 2008 is more akin to the 2007 experienced by the relegated Hampton Rovers (straight back up), than the hapless Old Paradians (down and down again).
