Just thought I would see if there are big footy people old enough to describe what it was like watching John Coleman, Bill Hutchinson and Dick Reynolds play. Even stories from parents, grand parents. How did they play, any interesting stories involving them, any comparisons to modern day players. I have heard that when Hutchinson ran out onto the field he would run some 400's to warm up.
I know there is stuff written in histories about these players but I thought it would be more interesting from the mouths of supporters.

I wish I could've seen those guys play. Apparently Coleman was the biggest freak at the game and could do anything.

I am just a tad to young to have seen Coleman play...but watched him train the Bombers.....at training with no effort he would just leap up and take marks ...just take shots at goal from the middle of windy hill...he was a freak.......and he could rumble:thumbsu:

My dad used to go watch Coleman play. He said most of the crowd would change ends every quarter so they could be at Coleman's end.

My Grandfather played 14 GAMES for tha bombers, and played 10 games with Coleman, he had photo's of them together....they were pretty good mates. He said that Coleman was extremely strong and that he'd once lifted a Ute...............not sure if this true but. He was coached by Reynolds too, he said that Barassi's "pep talk about keeping it away from tha tall players was used back then by Reynolds. He met Hutcho, but wasn't lucky enough to play with him........last saturday was his 1 year death aniversary.....he led a great life.

My mother used to go and has seen them all play, said that Coleman had a great verticle leap and with little run up could sit on shoulders. Reynolds and Hutchy were great passes (stab) of the ball.
Even my father who is richmond says coleman was quite special and nothing compares to him.
Colemans stats alone speak volumes, but anyone i know who saw him play, speaks of him in the highest regard.
Shame his career ended so early, if it didn't he may have been regarded as the best player ever.

Was it a posterior cruciate that ended his career.

My ol' man shits on about him something chronic! Says he had the greatest vertical leaps he's ever seen and could virtually jump over a player to mark the ball... old people, they always stretch the story over time! :D
