Okies this is mainly for Mooster, but anyone who gets inspired to get a copy of this album, I swear you will never regret it. :)
Pet Sounds. Mooster you said your friend described this album as a masterpiece. That's dead right. It's Brian Wilson's greatest work.
The thing that really strikes people when they hear the album is how amazingly personal the lyrics are. Brian really laid his soul out for everyone to hear, and the result is just amazing. Brian himself says how proud he is of how much love is in the music, and that's exactly the feeling you get when you hear it. It's more than just an album.
The newer CDs have the mono version of the album, then in stereo. The stereo mix does bring out a lot of the backing music a little more and stuff, but I don't like it for the simple reason that it's been created. The album was only ever made in mono, they literally created the stereo one. There are vocal tracks missing and little flaws like that, it's not a true reflection, and some songs just sound wrong remixed like that. But it's still an interesting comparison.
Highlights of the CD include 'That's Not Me', 'Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)', 'I Know There's An Answer' and 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Times'. And of course 'God Only Knows'.
The one disappointment for me is the inclusion at all of 'Sloop John B'. Kinda breaks the mood. Originally on the vinyl, it ends side one for easy skipping. I believe it was only added so it could be put out as a single, I may be wrong though.
Anyways it's one album that everyone should own. Definitely worth checking out and making your own opinion about. :)
If there's any other fans or people who own the album who want to make their own review or comment, PLEASE do so. :)

Good deal, thanks.
I've printed out your revue and will use it as a reference when I find the CD and listen to it. I only have one day off this week :( but that day happens to be tomorrow. The hunt will be on. If I have the time to go to several places, I'm sure I'll find it. Then I'll come back & give my own revue. :)
Peace Lioness,
Mooster

Excellent Abum...I had "God only Knows" and "Wouldnt it be Nice" as tunes at my Wedding Reception. I did all the music myself (pre-mixed on PC and burnt to CD's in the months and weeks before from Patsy Cline to Basement Jaxx)
But yes back to Pet Sounds... It really got the creative juices flowing and inspired the main competition across the Atlantic to push their own boundaries.
The arrangement and harmonies of both the Beach Boys and the Beatles are simply brilliant!

I've commented on this album before - it's great. But you have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to it, IMO.
It's a shame that one of the best songs is being used to shill chocolate.

Okies for everyone who already HAS the album and loves it, I'd like to recommend the ultimate Pet Sounds listening experience....... the Pet Sounds Sessions box set.
Disc one contains the stereo version of the album, then some tracking sessions and backing tracks for the songs. This is the content of Disc 2 as well. Heaps of studio chatter and stuff mixed in, it's all very interesting to hear. :)
Disc 3 is breathtaking. It kicks off with the vocals-only version of the album, which really has to be heard to be appreciated. Certainly this half hour alone is worth the entire price of the set.
The rest of Disc 3 is alternate versions of the songs, such as a version of 'God Only Knows' with a sax solo in the middle, very nice.
Disc 4 is the standard mono version of the album.
The set is an awesome way of really appreciating how much work went into the album, and you'll never hear it the same way again. :) Good value too, I got mine for around $90.

I still haven't found a single copy!
Wednesday was my only day off this week, and I ended up hanging with some friends and didn't go shopping. Sorry, not much of an excuse I know.
Next week is different. I am only working Wed & Thur, so plenty of shopping time.
Lioness, I wasn't planning on dropping 90 bucks on the thing! If the box-set is all I can find I'll get it, but Geez that'll cut into my funds to buy other CD's. You know how that is. There are always other CD's you need. ;)
Peace,
lioness

Peace,
Mooster let's make a deal. If you can't find the standard album one, I'll send it to you. :) Deal? I'm more than happy to, besides, you aren't ready for the box set just yet. ;)

Lioness,
Thanks, I appreciate the offer. At the same time, I am certain I can find it. So far, I've only looked in two small convenient locations which are situated along the route to and from work.
Actually, within a 3 kilometer radius of where I live there are several larger music shops. I'm thinking one of them will definitely have it. If not, the KC metro is loaded with lots of others shopping places. KC isn't as big as Melbourne, Sydney, New York etc, but we aren't backwoods either. ;) It's just a matter of having the time to go looking, I suppose.
Ordinarily with my work schedule, I have lots of time. However, this is the peak vacation/holiday season, and I am raking it in working all the absentee shifts. Sucks not to have the time off...until payday.
I have a large wish list of CD's I want for my collection. Regardless of how big the collection grows, the list (magically) seems never to shrink. :p
I'll let you know. If you sent something over, I would have to reciprocate with a nice present, and then all hell breaks loose. Next thing you know, you are in a constant war of postal bombardment like TigerTank and I. It's not pretty. ;) :D
Pet Sounds review coming soon. I promise. :)
Peace & many thanks again for the BB turn-on to begin with,
Mooster

Hey Mooster, the offer's there. :) Anyways just think, with all that extra work, the more CD's you can buy. ;)
Don't thank me for putting you on to the Beach Boys, although I do have to say, TOLD YA SO. :D Hehehehe nah really I'm just glad you're enjoying the music. :)

Tell me about it... I was mixing the tunes (DJ.. for want of a better word) for my footy club's Xmas Party. It was early on and the first two toppos were still getting about and I was throwing a bit of older music into the mix. I put on "Getting Better" after a Gomez track and was asked by a few of the younger blokes why I was playing the themesong of "Better Homes and Gardens"???
Incidently, Gomez's cover of Getting Better is/was being used to sell washing machines...
