Sydney :p
Thats wat the afl thinks anyway.
I would say collingwood, but they are everyones rivals.
Essendon mabye, cause of the past 2 years and mabye 2001
West Coast, used to beat us in our prime.
just my 50 cents.

In no way do i see Sydney as a rival - AFL is once more kidding itself.
I think maybe Port can be viewed as the closest rival we have. Many Port fans view us as a somewhat rival of recent years due to the finals and battle for top position during our glory years (reminds me of a Dragon song :() and the games we play are normally very entertaining and close.
Collingwood obviously for the two Holy GF defeats - and also for Eddie's campaign to rid us of the salary cap concessions.

Port. Collingwood.
If the Kangaroos come up north on a permanant basis, then we'll have a more realistic rivalry in there too.

Port and Collingwood are the two i put up as our rivals. Although the Port one is slightly more respectful.
There are also the "personal rivals" that occur for the average football follower that have nothing to do with the club itself -eg. because my brother goes for the bombers, beating essendon is always sweet.....2001 was extra sweet!

Collingwood. The Maglies always seem to put in some extra effort when the two teams meet. For all the reasons mentioned above - salary cap tantrums, the Buckley saga, copious tears at the two GF's, etc.
The Gold Coast Kangaroos may become closer adversaries with time.

Thats debatable. ;)

we will always have that mental edge in Bris V Collingwood games hence the blowouts that normally happen
Collingwood, Port and Essendon. Yet all have bigger rivals so we get sydney. At least it's not a long trip there

Essendon - remember when we were at our best in 2001 - 2004 - those games at Docklands were feral - bottles and abuse thrown at our players - if it bleeds match - 01 GF - Mal leaving - trying to poach Brennan - Essendon supporters insistently posting crap on our threads unlike most other rivals trying to get a rise out of us - i actually think they sub-consciously love us - but knocking them off - especially in Melbourne with a packed Dome is sweet - last year was a one off and can't wait for round 15 next year, so for mine it is them - as Viper said, the AFL tries to fabricate a rivalry with Sydney.
The Dogs are a close second - even with Aka, we had some brutal affairs with dirty Libba and now that Aka is there a renewed rivalry i believe - don't want him doing those handstands in fron t of us - surprised he still does it - Dogs supporters i know, cringe when he does it now and try to leave to save themselves embarrasment.

Yeah, back around 1999-2000, we had a massive hatred going with the Dogs.
Much of it stemming from filth like Liberatore and Romero scratching our players like petty thugs.
Still remember the pictures of the scratches sustained by Steven Lawrence and Craig McRae.
First of all pretty boys, Libba is a champ! ;)
Anyway, agree with most of those already mentioned. If we have any, they have only been created this decade since a team usually has to actually be successful to see the rivalries emerge. Like many others, matches against Collingwood & E'don have been the matches that i've particularly wanted to win.
Loved the idea brought up on the main board about mixing up the rivalry round to include more recent events. The rivalry round itself has become very stale, after the 2 derbies and the 100 year old Vic clubs are put together, the rest of the games are just rubbish. Would love to see one based on the last decade and a half...Bris v Port or Ess, WC v Syd, Hawks v Geel, Carl v Melb, Pies v Adelaide. Some are a bit of a stretch but no different then half the 'rivalry' games they have had in recent years. Don't know about anyone else but often seems to me like just another Vic wank-fest.

Don't worry. You'll have another team in QLD to be your rivals soon.

So the rumours that Geelong are being relocated to Thursday Island are true then.

I'd love to live on Thursday Island. Not much of a supporter base though.
Seems so John, tough on the Cat's supporters but is in the best interests of the game to awaken the sleeping giant that is Thursday Island football.

I've heard that it isn't set in stone.
The Coochiemudlo Cats are also a viable option.
