View Full Version : Ben Cousins
Would anyone seriously conider him. I know it's doubtful he'd slip to our pick and I don't think we have salary cap room or possibly spaces on our list. he would just add to our old list aswell.

Plugger and Hall didn't have substance abuse problems though.
I personally would hate, hate, hate to see Cousins in Swans colours. I don't care how good he is on the field, his arrogance is enought to turn me off and we would be wasting a place on our list IMO.

Cousins is an absolute gun footballer who (If not an addict) would be fantastic for any club to pick. However with the brilliant football ability comes far too many what ifs for most club to select him (If the AFL allow to even nominate).
I Don't expect to see in and team colours next season espeically not Swans ones.

Even if we wanted him, fitting him in the salary cap will be a problem. There's no chance of him coming to us. If he does decide to play, he will go to the Tigers for sure.

He has indicated, through his management, that he will only be playing in Melbourne so i doubt he would go to Sydney anyway. StKilda, Hawthorn and Essendon have already stated that they are not interested so it would seem that Richmond or Collingwood may be options...

i'm not giving an opinion either way, but where the salary cap is concerned, or the issue of payment, surely cousins would have to accept whatever any club offered, he'd be in no position to dictate anything, would he?
i can't imagine clubs throwing money at him, despite his football ability

swans have just released a press statement ruling out any suggestion the club would pursue ben cousins
so that's that
by the way, just in case anyone really was entertaining serious thoughts of getting him in red and white, watch the 06 grand final presentation one more time, when cousins is called up to join judd with the cup on the dais....

I'm not interested in watching that game again. But given that they'd just won the flag, I don't think his actions were out of the ordinary.

We've dished out our fair share of, as i like to say, "born-again" ****heads, and given a chance and keeping in mind he wants to change i think he could really turn his career around.
But that doesn't mean I want him here, I think he'd be too much of a liability on the club, and the media hype would just ruin it all (this considering the gamble with him not relapsing pays off..).
In the end it just comes down to whether we want another 30+ player at our team, and i think i answer for everyone when i say N.O.

Apparently celebrating a grand final win is alarming, you know its a sanitised world we live in these days:rolleyes:
I didn't see anything wrong with the way Cousins celebrated. I do agree with whoever said that Judd was a robot, I commented on the day how little emotion Judd expressed.

But he *had* a drug addiction, he just things only ----heads can do and wherever he goes he attracts a media circus the size of the ego of Eddie Maguire. The point isn't whether our midfield was worse than him on one day, its whether our club as a whole would benefit from it, not only the team we put onto the field, because, as big as that day was it was only one day. I can name a bazillion occassions where our midfield was better than Judd & Cousins put together.
Footy isn't a two man show, it takes a whole team on and off the field to be successful.

What are you saying then? If Ben Cousins was taking performance enhancing drugs, Sydney would be right to feel agrieved or hard done by but Cousins has admitted to substance abuse of illicit drugs ie cocaine. I have no idea on what basis you feel Sydney has the right to feel agrieved unless of course your are implying that his performence was enhanced.
As for getting defensive and aggressive i am just here offering my opinion and taking an interest in what people have to say. I find it extremely amusing and somewhat childish when people come out with the old "**** off back to winless hill, you wont win a game" blah blah blah blah, when it has nothing to do with the thread at all.

I'd take him, he really IS better than anyone we've got in the midfield or probably ever had. He's THAT good and well worth the risk. He's in rehab and has not been proven to have done anything wrong yet. The cops who arrested him (the most corrupt and ineffective police force in the country btw, ie Mallard ie Rayney ie that Cottesloe maniac) are already reeling from round one of this case and the Eagles are obviously going to be ultimately screwed in the courts over terminating his contract so early. I have no problem with sportsmen being held to a community behavioural standard but don't understand why we need to vilify someone just becoz they are in the public eye. He's in rehab, it's no mean feat to tackle Ice addiction and he should be given credit for giving it a go. The Swans are professional and can boot him if he causes trouble, until then at least give this guy another chance - any reasonable employer would do exactly that. My fellow Swans supporters and the AFL will obviously disagree.

The club will not be taking him as the club list has been finalized ,with it only having selections 11 & 26 in the draft (the third pick used on Bird). With the promotions of Jack, Barlow & Brennan the list is full. Therefore the club will not be having any selections in the pre-season draft.

Goodsey? Kelly? Skilton? Kirk?
Brownlow medals and high posession counts don't mean anything unless you can play for the team before playing for yourself.
Cousins, in my opinion, is an absolute star.
This doesn't mean he will fit into our team or compensate for the fact that we would be losing another spot for another youngster.

why is this even a topic for discussion?
the club has made its call already, the afl would need to give the nod before cousins is even registered to play again, for ANY club, and right now this is just a dead issue

because someone suggested our whole midfield put together still doesn't come up to par with a toy boy
He's a star, but a fading one and even if he's allowed back and we create a space for him out of nowhere, we should stay well clear from him. Frankly, he's not worth the trouble.

Cousins Better than anyone in Swans midfield or better than all of them together.lol.To use a boxing term,Goodes is pound for pound the best player in the AFL.His versatility is second to none. His height, speed and skill make him the perfect footballer. It irks me every time i hear Chris Judd The best player in the AFL!Yes he is a champion midfielder, but lets see him play full forward, centre half forward, wing, ruck rover, ruck, centre half back, full back.Goodes does all this sometimes in the same game!!!! So as far Cousins being better than anyone in the Swans midfield,i seriously doubt he is better than the real best player in the AFL.In comparison to Cousins,Goodes is going to get better, thats the scary thing.Purely because he is totally committed to his club and his team mates unlike Cousins who has showed himself to be a selfish individual who has consistently let his club and his team mates down.So even though the club have stated there not interested, for what its worth thats my 2 bobs worth on the subject as in my eyes the Swans know Cousins could never be a true Blood !!!!!!!!

Took me a while to read, but you're right. He'll just end up being a has-been at a club that half-heartedly accepted him when, without making those dumb choiuces he made, he could have been a player of his own league in WC.
Cousins was attached to WC in a way that he couldn't be to anyone, we already have a spiritual leader Cuz;

that's my opinion, that's what we do here on big footy, and this IS a swans fan board, so why are you expecting any kind of objective discussion about someone who's been a thorn (or should i say pr.ck) in our side for several years

If there was an award for taking everything out of context, you'd win it. Compiling bits of information and picking and choosing doesn't really help create credibility for you.

Im a massive Ben Cousins fan and would of loved to of seen him play AFL again but after tonights report about his 5 day cocain bender over in LA no club would even consider him if the AFL let him nominate for the draft (highly unlikely). You hear so much about the close playing group you guys have down at the swans and just having Cousins down there could almost tear it apart, hes not worth the risk to Sydney.
