View Full Version : My favourite quarter of footy at the Gabba

One of my all time favourite games in fact. We were sitting 20 metres from the Scott-Michael-Riewoldt incident. These clips certainly bring back memories of the times we were the big boys on the block. Have a look at Charman, Scott, Voss, Johnson, Pike, Leppa, Mal, and co get stuck into the Saints!!

Fantastic!! :thumbsu:

The Chris Scott-Aaron Hamill dual that night is still the best one-on-one contest I have seen at the Gabba.

I remember seeing that game for the first time last year on Austar just after the season ended, By far my fav H&A game EVER!

I was in London, at work.

Was listening to this game on headphones on the computer.

Even via internet radio I could feel the intensity. Although I remember the radio broadcast making out like Riewoldt had been savagely assaulted by Mal Michael and Chris Scott. Eddie made it sound even worse on the half time recap. The way he grinded the anti-Brisbane axe throughout that game made it even sweeter.

The battle between Chris Scott and Aaron Hamill was amazing. I remember Eddie trying to make out as if Chris Scott took a dive... until they realised he was handing his teeth to a trainer.

This was probably the last game of the Brisbane dynasty. I hope Leigh can inject the same intensity and aggression into our next group.

Yep I was at that game....Awesome.

Remember my dad who hates AFL going on and on about what a terrible thing Mal and Scott had done. All of us who follow the game thought it was great.

Good to hear Ed trying to do in the Lions players as well!

Used to love listening to Ed fake excitement when we used to belt his woeful Pies in the dynasty era.

Hearing him feign excitement as Brennan tore them a new a-hole on debut in 2003 was particularly sweet.

If this thread is about that game then yes I agree it was a great game, but for me it was tarnished by Eddie's disgraceful commentary. It would have been so much better if there had been commentators enjoying what was a ripping battle, rather than listening to bitter Ed trying to drum up controversy.

If this thread is about other favourite quarters, then I'd also like to nominate the game against Carlton this year, where Brown kicked 4 goals in the last 10 minutes to be the first Brisbane Lion to kick 10.

yeah, and the C'wood supporters will bleat endlessly about Voss & Lynch's extreme bias.

Great stuff Warwick...was really a great Lion's moment. In fact of lot of those great moments did revolve around them really physically dominating the opposition. In particular C'wood & E'don. As far as great contests go, the game against Port in 2002 (I think) was just a belter. Ending up going down by a point, but the last quarter was as intense and entertaining as i've seen.

that was hands down the best i can remember the atmosphere being at the gabba for 2-3 years.

Definitely.

The "Browny Browny" chants started in the section next to mine, and it just erupted from there.

Absolutely electric.

The 4th quarter comeback against Port Adelaide this year was almost as intense, a shame we couldn't run away with the win.

if we had won that port game it would have been close to equal.

but the browny browny chants were the first time i can remember shivers down my spine for a couple of years at least.

AWESOME atmosphere.

So sick of "BRIS-BANE *CLAP CLAP CLAP*".

I miss those haunting "LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIONS LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIONS" chants that used to rock the Gabba in the premiership years.

Occassionally someone will get it started, but it doesn't catch on like it used to.

Going back a bit i remember the Fremantle game at the Gabba in 2001. I was only watching it on TV, but that last quarter when we came from like 10 points down at 3/4 time to win by 50 i think was pretty special....

Favorite Quarter of footy at the Gabba.....

Well only having been to one game it would be the last quarter of the Geelong game this year and watching the way Brown secured his 1st Coleman medal.

As for the numerous one I have watched on TV it would have to be 1995 V Hawthorn. Biggest 3 Quarter time comeback in AFL history. Huge amount of goals from outside 50, and was the 1st step towards making the Bears/Lions a powerhouse that won the 01-02-03 flags.

If you don't mind me invading, I'll go back even further to the '96 finals against Essendon. That final quarter was amazing, culminating with Wanganeen hitting the post with a right foot snap from about 10 metres.

That was brilliant edge-of-your-seat entertainment, and if I'm not mistaken would have been the second last Bears game at the Gabba.

Not the best quarter, but the best match imo at the gabba was beating Essendon in 2001 after being not so good for the first part of the year, and the bombers had only lost 1 game since 99 or something. We were sitting next to some bombers supporters who were filthy at their team and said "we'll see how you go in september. At the MCG" and we all know what happened :)

Eddie made it sound even worse on the half time recap. The way he grinded the anti-Brisbane axe throughout that game made it even sweeter.

The Footy Show episode the following week was hillarious.

Eddie was stunned no-one else (players and Sam Newman included) wanted to flame the Lions with him. They all thought fair was fair.

Eddie was seething.

And btw, I just found the clips on youtube. I didn't make them.

(Although I could probably do a better job. Just see avatar for evidence).

Absolutely.

The LIONS chant used to send shivers down your spine the way it would spread around the ground.

About time we bring back a bit of atmosphere at the Gabba. These days there is a roar when the opening siren goes, and then silence after the umpire bounces the ball.

Agree, although when falling asleep at the sydney game this year:

A guy at the back of the stand started chanting to wake me up:

everwhere we go
people want to know
who we are
what do we tell them?
We are the brisbane lions
the mighty mighty lions

Then everytime browny came alight
he would sing;

we got super browny in our side (sung to the tune of his got the whole world in his hands)

fantastic stuff:):)

I have to disagree, I really hate the lets rip off the barmy army chants and make them into our own.

Liiiooooooonnnnnnnnssssss chants are the best and were awesome back in our glory days, very hard to get up and going now always gets drowned out by bris-bane clap clap clap despite my best efforts.

On topic: Brisbane St Kilda qualifying final 3rd quater in 04- stretched the margin to 100 points in that quarter, really looked liked 4 in a row was a formaility, if only we could of played the Prelim at home....oh well such is life.

First chant was around long before the barmy army so perhaps they have "ripped it off some one else" If they have good on them there is nothing wrong with coping a good idea

Who cares if it is a rip off anyway, as long as they do not start chanting "D-FENCE":p

That may be so but it has become a trademark of the Army, and they do it to death reminds me of primary school sports day.

It only should happen when we are up there with the best. It smacks of arrogance, and it was used to demoralise the opposition. I love it. I started to hear it at the Gabba in the last half of the season. I think we will hear a lot more of it next season

Rd 21 vs the Saints in 2004.

We were jumped early by the Great Victorian Hope, and they were looking good, but within 15 minutes, we ruined their entire season. The fab five and co stepped it up. It was beautiful, it was poetic, it was what we were spoiled to call 'ours' through our dominant period.

The Gabba was rocking by half time, and the buzz during the final 5 minutes of that quarter and through the entire half time break was something I'd never experienced at the Gabba.

The second quarter of that game was the most dominating performance I have witnessed at the Gabba.

Simply awesome.

We beat sides by a bigger margin, but some of the football we played in that quarter was breathtaking.

I always use that game as an an example of the Gabba crowd lifting the team.

After the first quarter, it really looked like Riewoldt was going to single handedly tear us to pieces.

I actually remember a Lions supporter kid sitting near me saying "Dad... that guy [Riewoldt] is ruining the game". :D

But yeah, from the second quarter onwards, we just hit the accelerator. Pretty sure Lynch had a blinder that day too.

Hot day too.

Did anyone got to the 1st game at the Gabba for the bears after the oval was made a proper footy ground and the dog track was removed?

3 or 4 point game against the Demons that would have been a ripper.

Not sure if you mean the first game under lights at the Gabba?

That was Round 21 in 1995 against Melbourne. We won after a titanic struggle (by about 14, I think) and in the process ended the Dees' season.....we were locked in a 3 way battle for 8th with them and the Pies.

It was a great game of footy and was also the game that Melbourne's Smith (first name escapes me) took an amazing hanger at the Stanley Street end......that mark has often been described as the mark of the century....love to see it again if anyone has a clip.

Anyway, next week we won again and the Swans upset the Dark Side so we snuck into the 8 for the first time ever as the Bears (and Champs cried with joy:thumbsu:)

We lost to the rampant Blues in the first week of the finals (under the then 1st v 8th) but I think that the accomplishment of making the finals for the first time, gave the club(and the supporters) a real sense of belief and hope that laid the fouundation for the Lions glory years between 1999 and 2004.

Sorry if this is off-topic but the memories from that and to 1995 are strong and old buggers like me love to reminisce.:o

The First game under lights is also a special memory but the one I am thinking of is I think round 7 1993, Brisbane had to play their 1st 6 games away while the dog track was removed and the Gabba was turned into a proper footy venue.

(If I have got the round wrong I apologise I am going off the top of my head)

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/1993/BBME19930411.html

Round 3 1993
Brisbane 17.13.115
Melbourne 17.11.113

Brisbane's 1st Official home game at the Gabba, they had played there before but this was the 1st time they played there with the dog track gone and with them actually living at the gabba full time instead of 3 or 4 exhibition games.

Melbourne had a 10 goal 3rd quarter this day and then Brisbane kicked 5 goals to 2 in the last to steal victory by a point.

This game and the 1995 Hawthorn game are the two games that I wish were available on Name a game, but for some reason even though they were telecast by channel 7 are not, very frustrating.
