The first of a 14 part series will focus on the facilities of the clubs in the EDFL. Clubs will be rated on a range of areas including change rooms, social rooms, playing surface, canteen, spectator comfort and general atmoshere.

The first club reviewed will be Buln Buln.

Change Rooms - Quite a decent size change rooms however they are in a square shape which do not allow for warm-ups other than in a circlular shape. Showers are quite decent however if i remember correctly one tap controls all. Negative 1 point for no door on the shitter. 2.5/5

Social Rooms - Very, very good social rooms. Spacious and caters for a large crowd, also have a view of the ground out the front windows. 4.5/5

Playing Surface - In a word, terribe. An abrasive surface means that vas on the knees is essential. Grass covering can be erratic depending on what time of the year you are playing. Play early in the season and the ground is a dust ball, get some rain and it is a bog. 1/5

Canteen - Serviceable, nothing spectacular. Salad roles were good though. 2.5/5

Spectator Comfort and General Atmoshere - The raised viewing area allows for a good viewing spectacle. The entire ground is visibe from the main stand. However not a lot of seating and viewing areas other then main stand. The scoreboard is old and quaint. Spectators also need to remember to pack an extra jumper as can get quite cold. Netball is out of the way but no too far which is good. 3.5/5

Overall Rating - 14/25
NB: Ratings are subject to change depending on others comments.

2.5/5

I don't think Lang Lang's surface warrants a 1 so Buln will be stuck with a 1. Lang Langs surface is a hazard a the best of times yet after the rodeo it is terrible.

Langy to get a massive donut for surface obviously.

Good thread goalsneak. Pretty close with your Buln ratings. I'd almost give Bulns social rooms full points though. At least 4.5. Deserve a 90% ranking.

Buln showers (in the vistors rooms at least) are shocking!:thumbsd: Took me about half an hour this year to get the mud off me with the dribble that was coming out of the wall (and there's not that much of me). Would have taken bigpapa 3 hours except he doesn't like to get dirty.:D

I would give the change rooms about 2 personally.

Ground this year was terrible. Would be alot better if they could get some water on it over the summer. Agree that the social rooms are excellent now with the extension. Also rate foxtel being on in the rooms - watched the AFL this year in front of the fire rather than the boring slogfest going on outside in the seniors in antarctic conditons.

We will now take a look at Bunyip. I haven't played there for a couple of years so need some imput for this one.

Change Rooms - Similar size, maybe slightly bigger that Buln Buln. Also in a square like shape. There is a bench the is not on the outside of the room as well which means less room for warm up drills. Wooden floorboards are a hazard especially when wearing stops. All in all a little bit too cramped. From memory the shower were good without being great. Home rooms have use of a bastetball court which is good during finals.2.5/5

Social Rooms - Can cater for a large crowd and has a great atmosphere during functions. Big windows mean you can see a large area of the ground during game day. Stage area is a little cramped. The most noticeable negative is that you have to use the change room toilets or the dirty brick cubical toilets out the back. Plasma TV with foxtel on it as well. 3.5/5

Playing Surface - Fairly good even playing surface with a good covering of grass. However the 50m arcs are only 40m. The ground also had good irrigation which allows for a good playing surface all year round. Fat Goal Posts not popular with key forwards.4/5

Canteen - Great quality when i have been during finals. Not sure if it is this good all year around but they have got everything you need. Hot Chips, good quality burgers, salad roles. It is also in a good location and during finals they open up a second canteen so you don't have to walk as far. 4.5/5

Spectator Comfort and General Atmoshere - There are many good places to watch the football from at Bunyip, with the best being in front of the change rooms/canteen. There is a great atmosphere here during the finals. Other good locations are behind the goals and there are a couple of little grand-stands scattered around the ground. 4/5

Overall Rating - 18.5/25

From memory the social rooms are OK. Nothing flash, nothing wrong with them either - just run of the mill social rooms. OK size but not huge. Average all the way. 3 for mine.

I would say the change rooms are a little better than Buln's although I seem to remember the floor being wooden and really slippery if you had stops on.

I'd played 10 years at Bunyip, so I should be able to answer some questions.

I haven't been there for a couple of years, so they could have fixed that up now. 3.5/5

We will now take a look at Catani. These facilities were shitful until a local decided to burn them down and get the club some new great facilities. Onya champ :thumbsu:

Change Rooms - Good size, good shape, located very close to the ground so not too far to run. They are an ideal size for a couple of lanes handballing or a bit of a circle. Bonus point for a warmup oval out the back. Showers are standard and the supply soap which is a bonus. 4/5

Social Rooms - Often caters for a large crowd and has a great atmosphere during functions. They often get 100 people out there for meals on a friday night, host league B&F nights there and is a great size for parties. Can see the ground from the rooms as well but usually people standing in front of them. Have toilets within the social rooms which is another good thing. 4.5/5

Playing Surface - Good grass covering most of the year but the wind at the ground is terrible. They seriously need to plant a few trees out there. Also interchange is a long way from the social rooms which is a good/bad thing depending on whether you get dragged for a clanger or bought off for a well earned break. 3.5/5

Canteen - Pretty poor standard canteen. Nothing special. Negative point because the bottled water is some home brand. 1/5

Spectator Comfort and General Atmoshere - Only the one real spot to watch the footy hear and this is in front of the rooms. Not enough seating and the wind is a killer. Scoreboard is a long way away and is in desperate need of an upgrade. Good parking right around the ground means you can watch the footy from your can on a cold day. Looks into sun.2.5/5

I reckon about 80% of the times I have played there the ground has been fairly muddy - especially the centre which was a bog heap this year (not as bad as Western Park of course). I'm guessing that it's pretty good early in the year but once we get some rain it deteriorates pretty quickly.

Change rooms rated a little too highly IMO.

By popular demand (Goodie and bigpapagman) here is the review of my favourite ground in the EDFL, Cora Lynn.

Change Rooms - The actual area where you get changed is a good size however there are only seats against 2 of the walls because of some locked gym equipment in the corner. In saying this there is still enough seating and plenty of floor room to warm-up. The main negative with the Cora-Lynn change rooms is the showers. Whilst there are about 4 or 5 the water pressure is non-existant and the showers were built for Captain Cook and the first fleet as anyone over 5'8 has to shower on their knees. No gutter betweens the shower and the change rooms mean the change rooms can get flooded. 3/5

Social Rooms - I am a fan of the Cora Lynn social rooms. Every time i have been in here there seems to be a good atmosphere. Plenty of seating area and good standing area near the bar. Also toilets within the change rooms are always a plus. 4/5

Playing Surface - Top notch playing surface, easilythe best in the EDFL. Can be a little bit slippery so usually go the stops but that is just being picky. 5/5

Canteen - The good farm people of Cora Lynn know their food. Home made cakes and rollls, scones ect are just out of this world. They also offer hot chips, potato cakes and anything else you want at a canteen. 5/5

Spectator Comfort and General Atmoshere - Different to most grounds in the EDFL in that the change rooms are located in a forward pocket and not on the wing but that is made up for with the grandstand on the wing. Gives you 2 options, to sit on the granstand or in the pocket. Viewing from the stand is good however if you are at ground level you can be restricted by the coaches box. The scoreboard is located badly in the forward pocket which can be hard to see from some positions. They also have a working clock which lets you know how long the quarters have been running for. 4/5

Overall Rating - 21/25

Not sure whether the clock is a good or bad thing - this year Cora Lynn (Sheen) were kicking so many goals I was standing there in the forward pocket looking at the clock sitting on about 37 minutes wondering when the **** the quarter was gonna end....:D

Only been in the change rooms once (this year) and they need a little more lighting - was 6pm and it was like being in the sporty (well without the crap music, punch ups and over-priced drinks). Also ran out of light beer - irresponsible serving of alcohol.

Change Rooms - 3/5 I would have gone for a 2.5. As they arent the best an arent the worst.

Social Rooms - 4/5:thumbsu: exactly

Playing Surface 5/5:thumbsu: Again, exactly

Canteen 5/5:thumbsu: Loves it.

Spectator Comfort and General Atmoshere -4/5 I say 3.5, the dirt pathways near canteen an rooms an social rooms isnt that good, an there is only seating on one side of ground.

Overall Rating - 21/25 or 20/25

Cora Lynn....

Being a bit tough on Buln's change rooms, marking these higher. Wasnt impressed when we were there. Buln's are shite, but Cora's are shitererer. Oh, and someone thought it would be funny to turn off the hot water before we twos were finished. Love showering in cold water, very invigorating.

Agreed with the surface being a little slippery, but stops fix that problem. Always take both types of boot to this ground.

The canteen was pretty good if you discount the fact that it appeared as though the little old farmer ladies started preparing their salad rolls on the Monday before the Saturday. And whats with the Dill Pickles on those rolls? Lose em ladies, and freshen them up.

Time for Ellinbank.

Change Rooms - Haha. Where do I start with the Ellinbank changerooms. How about i will start with the size. OK they are puny and the benches on the sides look like they can't hold anyone over 80kg's. The toilets out the back are respectable but the fact that it doubles as the trainers room where they have to fill up the water and cut the oranges is a touch gross. Oh yeah and the showers? With the clay on the ground you need some really good showers, but these ones are shocking, take ages to get warm and stay warm for about 5 minutes. 0/5

Social Rooms - Most the time after Ellinbank you just wan't to jump in your car and drive home but if you stick around you will find out that their social rooms are decent. Fairly good size, got a ping pong table too. Toilets inside the social rooms and a good bar. 3.5/5

Playing Surface - I can't really judge the playing surface, every time i have played there it has pissed down rain and there has been a foot of water on the surface. Anyway i hate the clay, it stains my white boots. The oval is a good shape and size though and i imagine it would be OK during decent whether. 2/5

Canteen - Pretty solid canteen. Got all the basics plus they are able to do chips, potato cakes and the likes. Dim Sims here were some of the best i have come across. 4/5

Spectator Comfort and General Atmoshere - Good parking all around the ground, trees to block the wind as well. Two real places to watch the footy from. Either in front of the change rooms but the best spot seems to be in front of the canteen. Netball is close to there so you can have a quick perve and not miss any of the footy. Scoreboard hard to see.2/5

Overall Rating - 13.5/25
NB: Ratings are subject to change depending on others comments.
Next in the series will be Kooweerup

RATINGS TO DATE (Out of 25)
1. Cora Lynn 21
2. Bunyip - 18.5
3. Catani - 15.5
4. Buln Buln - 14
5. Ellinbank - 11.5

I think its a terrible place to watch footy and has no atmosphere at all. I would 2 for that and the surface is crap, i would say a 2 as well. Agree with the others though.

i feel the atmoshpere at ellinbank is near on the worst in the league, everyone seems to be spread out and you lose alot of the vocal aspect of the game from the supporters and there is no real shelter in case of rain which means people get into their cars cause there is no where to stand

scoreboard often left down so you can't see part of the score,
2/5

If you are looking for an AFRO hairstyle, just fill up a water bottle in the Ellinbank away rooms. For some reason 240v is hooked up to the tap and when you get water, you get a boot too. Happened to our water girl 2 years ago. Thankfully they might have fixed it.

But not much else.

Not a lot to like about that ground IMHO.
