Interesting article in the Irish edition of the Sunday Times. In an interview with their Gaelic Games correspondent Christy O'Connor Marty relates how he attended a trial run in Limerick by the Lions. He felt he did very well and was expecting a call but it never came. Instead the Lions signed Colm Begley & Brendan Quigley.

I wonder how they missed Marty who was an outstanding minor (under 18) player?

This has been known for a long time Coyler.

Very happy with Begley I may add.

Marty Clarke may have had the skills to hit the ground running, but Begley is a more natural athlete, which is equally important in the modern game. That's not to say that Begley isn't a skilled player. Some of his delivery into our forward line this year was superb.

Begley will be an elite running midfielder.

Quigley would have been quite a player too if he didn't catch the homesickness bug.

Clarke is a jet, but don't underestimate the Collingwood PR machine's ability to maximise hype. Alot of water to go under the bridge for both Clarke and Begley yet.

Good to see The Irish Sunday Times are on the ball:p

Perhaps because it's hard to tell who will be the best player from a group of people who have never played the game before.

Seeing as most of the hype around Clarke started before anyone had actually seen him play an game of AFL footy, i am sure every word is justified and unique to him;)

I think it is quite comical that all you ever hear about is Kennelly and Clarke and rarely a mention of Begley in any story regarding the Irish lads. I have thought Colm has acquitted himself exceptionally well and agree with TBD's sentiments and look forward to watching the continued development of a real honest worker:thumbsu:

So you think we actually said "Martin, not good enough mate".

Or was it "Unfortunately you have not been selected this time, thank you for your participation."

Nothing to be gained with this thread. Just treading over old ground.
