Michael Newton (guy who took mark of the year) is the leading candidate.

1. Yep, Newton is the most likely for FF, though he can run around a fair bit so might not be there all the time.
2. If the 'Brad Miller revival' actually happens we may see him up there eventually.
3. Garland (drafted end of 06) was a swing FF/CHB or something like that at under 18s, the common story is he's being groomed as a key defensive option though.
4. Lynden Dunn has real potential, but he hasn't put on the size and power for the role - many see him as a Bruce-like utility, though some still hold out for a transformatin into a new David Swartz, but with good knees.

So, the answer is Newton, until further notice.

While I loved to watch the big man play in his younger days and don't doubt the massive contribution he has made to the club the fact is Neitz should have retired. The team needs to move forward and if Neitz was honest with himself he would acknowledge that his best footy days are behind him and contributing by merely taking away the best opposition defender is not enough for this team to win a premiership. IMO the Dees cannot win a premiership while Neitz is still playing.

that ridiculous.. we need to make a move NOW while he still is standing in between the big sticks.. yes he takes the best defender, he also crunches packs and is always making a contest...
go look at Collingwood vs Melbourne (the loss) last season when he dived on the ball with clement and Maxwell hot on his hammer, he stands and kicks a lovely left foot beauty straight in Juicey's lap.. then try tell me we dont need him.

All Class Neita.. All class!!!!

As far as i am concerned David Neitz can play on for as long as he likes!

Don't get me wrong, Neita is one of the greatest Demons to play the game but he no longer possesses that vice like grip on the ball and spills too many simple marks on the lead. It gets frustrating after watching him for so long and knowing what he 'was' capable of.

I second that, and the essendon game danihers farwell game played a blinder, was playin on 1 leg wit a dodgy knee and hammy and wit one had a broken finger. and still kicked 3 goals.

Yep if we can get one half decent game out of Neitz every now and then when he is given the biggest incentive to play well (i.e. playing to win for the outgoing coach and a great friend) then that should do us hey - lets keep that 'average is us' mentality going and I am sure we will do well in 2008 :(

You guys are speaking from the heart and not from the head and its decisions made on that basis that have caused the problem in the first place. Tough decisions need to be made and Neitz as captain should have made the toughest one by retiring

Of course Neitz isn't at his prime but an aging Neitz > any other FF option at the moment. In a couple of years when NEWTONNNNNNNN and/or others take over then he can retire but until then we still need the big guy at FF.

We are also forgetting that he's not just a really good player but a superb leader as well. That's always going to play a part, even if he isn't officially the captain.

He is still our best option as a full forward and as a captain. Why get rid of him? Let Juice play alongside him for a couple of seasons, so hopefully some of his experience rubs off. We don't want to throw Juice in the deep end so early, otherwise it will bite us in the backside. Neitz is still valuable for this team, and hopefully he can help us have a positive 2008.

You mean Juice can rub off some of his extraordinary skills on to Neita and we'll have the best tandem FF duo in the comp. :thumbsu:

Frawley would been terrible, one of the worst kicks on the list. Anyway, he will be a gun full back, but then again Neita started as a backman

Youve hit the nail on the head. We cant expect Juice to take on such a huge role after only half a dozen games. Have Neita and Juice playing out of the square, its the best way Juice can learn. Then 09 is when he'll turn it on as stand alone FF.

I know that he looks awkward but I haven't really seen him shank too many from memory.

Neitz can certainly be a key part of a premiership side. His problem is he doesn't have a CHF who should be doing most of the work.

How quickly we forget how powerful A. Lynch was not even moving from the Goalsquare only a few years ago in the Lions Dynasty.. the difference there being there was a gun CHF running around helping him out. That's what Neitz needs and has needed since we lost Schwarta.

But i do agree it is getting frustrating watching his once safe hand's spill easy marks and his trademark long bomb from outside 50 nowadays struggling to make the distance.
