Did anyone else catch this last night?
Two hours of highlights from the 1972 Lords Ashes test was on FOX 2. I love FOXTEL!
Great to see so many great highlights such as:
* Bob Massies 16 wickets for the test
* Dennis Lillee's action prior to his back problems - you can see how much his action changed afterwards
* Greggie Chappells sensational 130
* The Chappelli brothers putting on 80-odd
* A moustashe-less Rod Marsh smashing the Poms
* Boycott getting out to a defensive stroke  (Surprise, surprise!!)
* The aftermatch interview where a young Ian Chappell looked very reserved and was sucking on a Fosters during the interview!
* Mike Smith batting in just his spectacles (helmets were still a few years off!)
* It was the first time I have seen John Snow and Ray Illingworth in action.
Great stuff FOXTEL! That two hours was worth the fee for this whole month I reckon.
One thing I reckon is that although these days the players are fitter I seriously don't believe that they are all that more talented or skilled than the blokes from this era. The fielding was generally pretty good, although probably not quite as desperate, but the stumps were thrown down quite a bit. Some of the bowling was probably the best I've seen for a while, although I guess it is hard to tell from just highlights....
The greatest thing about this era was the sportsmanship. When players got a nick, they walked, they didn't wait for the umpire. That was great to see. It's been a long time since I have seen someone walk ... times have changed.

Briedis,
Do you know if Foxtel plan to replay this at another time? I didn't know it was on, otherwise I would have definately watched it!!
As a cricket fan, you hear so much about the past greats, the likes of Marsh, Lillie, Ian and Greg Chappell, Bradman, Benaud, etc etc. and it's good to see some highlights of these cricketing greats in action to see what they were really like. :)
Cheers!!

Nah, it doesn't say on the FOXTEL website. Maybe give them a ring....
Mind you it only has the first one-dayer between England and Sri Lanka - so it looks like they haven't got next months FOX Sports 1 or 2 stuff on there yet, so it is a possibility. Keep your eyes out for it.
They are showing a show called "Cricket Legends" on the 27th at 11:00PM on FOX Sports 1. Not sure who it will be, but I have a "Cricket Legends" video of Viv Richards - so I guess it must be from this series of cricket docos. Hopefully, it's not Viv because I have already seen that one!
On the game last night I forgot to say also that it was funny seeing guys bowling in proper "business-style" shirts. Bob Massie had his undone almost to the waist, so it was just this bare chest tearing into bowl. Very amusing!
Some of the hairstyles in the crowd were....interesting, to say the least. Although, the members of the MCC all looked like the same sort of blokes that go today...actually it probably is the same blokes that go today!

They were only playing it to fill in time because the England vs. Sri Lanka test was rained out.
Saw Massie's 16 in a test (for about the 5th time!) always entertaining.

I remember listening to this test on the radio (no direct televised coverage in those days!) and this program is the first time I've seen more than a few minutes of highlights. It was great being able to see what I could only visualise at the time such as the description of John Price's bizarre curved run in (wonder if mid-off ever got in his way?), the total incompetence of Bruce Francis and Stacky finishing off the test as fast as he could. It was just fantastic and I thought the BBC coverage was fairly good for the time.

Does it show Bob Massie dipping half the ball in vaseline round the back of the Pav, before he bowled?

Nope, but I think you will find that on John Lever's video diary from the 76/77 tour of India!.......DVD version includes Mike Athertons dirty pockets.
Boycott was bowled around his legs by Massie in that game I think.
There's been quite a few guys who have had the game of their career in their first test, Hirwani, the Indian leggie springs to mind as another one.

hmmmmmm.......swung the ball more than anyone ever, then never swung the ball again, very strange indeed.......

I was thinking that it was strange that a bloke who took 16 wickets only played 5 more tests. These days they give some blokes 20 tests before they realise they are hopeless.
Anyone remember what the official line was why they stopped picking Massie? I know Thommo and Tangles would have been coming through at that stage, perhaps they just saw more promise in those two?
I'll ignore you Pommie's whineing about the vaso.....;)

I think the official line was after West Indian Customs confiscated his Petroeleum Jelly he lost his "competitive edge".......

I've been wondering about this vaso thing Brett Li.
I've had a look at Massie's performance after that first test, and it is pretty good. He got a bit of stick a couple of times from Pakistan in the two tests he played in the following series, but there was some good bowling in there as well.
I can't see why he would have been dropped for any reasons regarding form.
I've had a look through my Aussie cricket history book and I can't see any articles/stories on him being dropped, it just says that "They [the Aussies] have come through to win the series without Dennis Lillee and Bob Massie", but there is no mention as to why Massie was left out of the West Indies tour.
Is there any truth behind your rumour? I know you were probably ****-stirring to a degree, but I reckon there must have been some reason that the ACB never picked him again. Maybe it was a Wayne Carey situation?

Massie's line was always that he picked up a back injury in the West Indies, trying to bang it into the pitch rather than swinging it in unhelpful (swing bowling) conditions. It's a pity he faded as fast as he arrived, he will certainly go down in the history books as the finest exponent of top quality vaseline-bowling.
