View Full Version : Torney Joins the Crows, again.
Congrats to Torney, pity we cant see you on the field again but at least its good to see him being involved in the club in some way and getting an opportunity to start his future after AFL footy.

The Adelaide Football Club is pleased to advise that Jason Torney will return to work at the Club in the Coteries Services Executive role recently vacated by Ben Hart.
Jason will start his new role in January. It involves servicing and liaising with the Club’s 300-plus members in the Coterie Sponsorship groups.
Torney said: “I have spent considerable time over the past 12 months trying to plan my future after my AFL career. This role fits in perfectly with those plans and allows me to continue being involved at the Club that I have enjoyed being part of for the past five years.”
General Manager, Commercial Operations. Phil Harper said: “The whole Club was understanding yet disappointed when Jason was advised his contract would not be renewed for 2008. Losing people of Jason’s calibre from the organisation leaves a hole but to have him back working with some of our most important people is a win for all parties.”
Jason played 195 AFL games – 77 for Adelaide and 118 for Richmond.

They should really just rename Coteries Services Executive to Sorry we delisted you but list management has to be considered.
Good to see we take care of our players.

Fantastic news for us and Jason :thumbsu:
Here's hoping he follows in the footsteps of Benny and can secure an assistant coaching position after this role. It would be tremendous to have Torney's football nous directly instilled into our young players coming through :thumbsu: With Hart, Torney and Clarke we would have an absolute wealth of football knowledge (and especially important, knowledge of how the game is currently played as all 3 are recent retirees) being passed down to our fledglings. It may also develop greater leadership within the group; Hart having been an outstanding leader at the club for many years, likewise Torney every time he stepped onto the field.
Now all we need is blokes like Rehn, Pittman, Ricciuto and Darren/Andrew Jarman back here! Imagine an Adelaide coaching panel that read something like:
Neil Craig: Head Coach
Andrew Jarman: Assistant Coach
Shaun Rehn: Assistant Coach
Ben Hart: Assistant/Defence Coach
Jason Torney: Defence Coach
Mark Ricciuto: Midfield/Forward Coach
Darren Jarman: Forward/Skills Development Coach
David Pittman: Full Time Ruck Coach
Matthew Clarke: Part Time Ruck Coach
I know we probably won't ever see Rehn, Jarman and Craig all in the same coaches box but boy would it be a great off-field lineup.
In any case, goodluck with the new role Jason and hopefully we will see you in the coaches box on matchdays in 2009 and beyond :)
Hmmm, back-ended contract perhaps?
Whenever you read stories like this one gets suspicious, or is it just me. :)

A bit like Adam Kingsley, Stuart Cochrane and Phillip Walsh perhaps? And Mathew Primus a few year ago.
Your not suggesting we are doing anything sinister are you?

Rehn is ****ing terrible. I would vomit if he was made an assistant coach at the AFC.

I'd imagine most clubs would prefer a healthy mix of people / opinions / voices from a wider selection of sources.

Fantastic news! :thumbsu:
And its brilliant to see clubs look after their favourite son's after their careers are over.
Jason might have only been with us for 5 years but I know I speak on behalf of few others when I say that he has been a fovourite for the way he has gone about it. He has arguably been our bravest player who ALWAYS gave 110% for the jumper. I for one am glad he played for my team and as one of those 300-plus members in the Coterie Sponsorship groups, I am genuinely looking forward to meeting Jason.
Phenomenal move by the club IMHO :thumbsu:

So why was he dumped? Phenomenal move because they got it wrong in the first place?

Maybe people can take a step back from the 'clubs have no loyalty to players' bullshit that was being thrown around at the time of his delisting.

Just ignoring the fact that these loyal clubs delisted the player in the first place?

How is that ignoring it?
We had hard choices to make, we made them, and we did everything in our power to make sure the players were taken care of after football, going so far as to offer them lucrative employment.
If you think thats disloyalty, i hope my employers will be as disloyal to me.
Well done to him. I will never forget the last goal he kicked in his career, still one of the top 10 goals in the history of the club.

Well said.

I did have a fleeting moment when I agreed with you, but I think the AFC would have kept him or re-negotiated a contract for 1 year with that component looked after.
This is a genuine attempt ( I feel) by the club to keep good football people in the club and to acknowledge that sometimes football decisions dont necessarily mean bad business decisions follow

dont get carried away with it. Modra kicked 10 better goals on his own, never mind one D.Jarman, A.McLeod or Roo's efforts over the years.
it was good though

He was out of contract, so a very different situation to Primus. ;)
Good to see AFC keeping JT around the club & repaying a good club man.
Just need JT to sign up for the Bays & all ends well. :thumbsu:

You wouldn't find a bigger Jason Torney fan than me on this board. From the moment he played his first game for us he has won me over and has gone on and one to prove himself over and over again.
However, looking at the profile of our pist and what needs to be done in the next couple of years it was absolutly the right decision to delist Jason. No doubt he had another 1-2 years of good footy left in him but we needed to reduce the number of 30 year olds on our list to make the transition easier by intriducing more youngsters into the side earlier.
If we were a genuine contender with a great mix of talent across all age groups I am certian Jason would have been kept on.

Delighted JT is back at the club, the more past players we have around the greater sense of culture we'll build. Great move. I suppose it will be off to the Roosters now to fill the Assistants position and HBF position left vancant by Benny Hart. We should rename North Adelaide, the Adelaide Academy for Assistant Coaches...
And i have to agree with PCORF, his last goal will go down in my all time top ten goals for the club. It may not have been a pretty as what DJ could pull out, but it showed the guts that JT was all about, for those that don't agree, perhaps its time for a new thread?

So what your saying is Torney was cut because we recruited the wrong crop of youngsters and we need to start again eg Hinge, Pfeiffer, Mcintyre, Turner.
Sounds like a cop out to me. You dont delist blokes who are playing quality football, and he always has for us. Was easily in our best 22, so we are now gifting a young bloke a guernsey because of his age not on merit. A very flawed system in my book.

No I am not saying that at all. Hinge, Pfeiffer, McIntyre and Turner?!?!?! WTF?!?! 3 of those 4 players were at some stage or another rookie listed players! SHow me a club with a 100% drafting record while you are at it.
Your logic here makes no sense. All those were cut WITH Torney. The players that might have sealed Torney faith are those that are on the list, not those that were delisted with him.

Good to see JT will be hanging around the Club looking after the Coiters.
He's a genuine nice guy and shouldn't be lost to our Club

Congrats to both Torney and the Adelaide Footy Club over this decision, I think its great to keep ex-players around the place once they are no longer playing, especially those of the quality of Torney. Its great for these blokes to come back and work with the younger ones and instill a bit of culture around the club.
Jason Torney has a new role? I was shocked when they delisted him and unfortunately he isnt going to be playing in the AFL again :(, oh well, he was a good player and hopefully he does well at this.
Just ignoring the fact that these loyal clubs delisted the player in the first place?
What amazing transformation in your posting style since your first post. If Toots was still around he would be proud.

Hey guys im new to BigFooty but have been reading the posts for quite a while. Had to comment this thread
Jason was such a fantastic player for his time over at our club, who could forget those long 50m+ goals he kicked a couple of time this year, almost rescuing us in the first final! Just seemed to be able to nail them when he needed too.
So glad to see him take up a role with the club. Likewise with Hart and Clark
