View Full Version : Dermie. Absolute Legend!
Just watching him on channel 9 he still has the same swagger and confidence he used to bring onto the field for us in the 80's. In my opinion he is easily in the top 5 Hawks of all time and Franklin is miles off him at the moment. People must have many special memories of him, tell us your best. For me it is obvious, 89 GF absolutely polaxed could'nt even get up told to come off but refuses so Yabby puts him in the pocket takes a grab kicks the goal and does the Dermie walk just to say "is that the best youve got?"
What! No one has some good Dermie memories to share?

Not footy related but I saw him at the TOK H (toorak rd) nightclub in the early-mid 90's chatting up some very young ladies (about half his age.)
Gets around 'ol Dermie.

remember when he played for Sydney Swans, and he stomped on Hawthorn player Rayden Tallis's head while Tallis was on the ground in a pre-season game, I think he got seven matches for it.

So many meories. Decking Chiron, Vanderhaar... actually most of Essendon. Lots of what Derm did lacked a bit class (see previous TOK-H post), however his interview after the '91 GF was top shelf. Loved his passion for the Big V as well.
My favourite Hawk player of all time.

Dermie was at his absolute best in the 1989 finals series. Sensational 2nd Semi Final against Essendon. If you want an idea of how good this guy was, just grab a copy of that game.
Those were the days. You knew whenever we had Dunstall at FF and Brereton at CHF, it would take a very team to beat us.
I recall meeting both Dunstall and Brereton after one of our premierships, I think it was 1988. Watching them on the field, I always thought Bung would be the quiet one and Dermie the larrikin, but it was the other way around. Dermie was very polite and pleasant.

Around 1990 with Dunstall out injured.
Had broken ribs and played with an inflatable vest under his jumper against the Tigers at the G. I think he kicked 8 that day and was inspirational.
or the mark he took against the Dogs at princess park on the half forward flank
or the day he put Vanderhaar in a body bag at waverley in a final
or his effort in 85 when we were down and out against the scum and he managed 8 in the G.F

Dermie is a legend and any one that says he isnt doesnt know any thing about footy. He was a gun player that won us preierships and he can still pull hot chicks and as a comemtator hes the smartest in the knowledge of the tactics and I recon he should coach and when he was running us them old Directors wouldnt let him mangae us with his ideas but at least he got one idea up which was to hire us Clarko and thats turned out to be one of the best hireings ever for our club. I hope that Jeff gets Dermie back to make sure we win a premiership to help Jason Dunstall out.

Can I ask why he moved clubs?
Was he delisted by the hawks? Or di he just want a change?
Not having a go just interested
I spent about 6 hours with him a few years back when I caddied for him in a pro-am golf tournament. I was only young and he was really nice to me. Having a good talk with me and he even let me have a few shots. He was bloody funny especially with his Happy Gilmore shots and all his lost balls

completely random, but watchin a video in geography this year about the Murray-Darling Basin and dermie hosted, gets around.
not doubting his talent back in the day, but a couple of months ago was at the Grand Final between Silvan and Woori Yallock. There was no bigger w@nker than Dermie. He was playing for Woori. He headlocked a guy behind play and then went to ground when his opponent was feeling for contact.
Boy were we happy when he went off with a broken nose. BTW, Silvan won, by a bit too. :D

Dermie was named Vice Captain of the Hawks in 1993 but didn't play a game due to injuries. He was offered a reduced contract for 1994 but he didn't accept it, so he entered the pre-season draft where he was No 1 pick by Sydney.
After only 7 games for the Swans, Dermie entered the pre-season draft again in 1995. There was speculation he would be picked up again by the Hawks at pick 11, but Collingwood took him at 10. He played some good footy for the Pies. Not great, but handy.

Being a Frankston boy I've met Dermie a few times.
He rolled up to the Frankston Bombers CC one day and hung shit on all his mates, had a few beers, told a few tall stories. It was great to see him with his mates, made me realise how normal he really is.
My favourite player of all time and a nice guy to boot.
Gotta give the guy credit for throwing it in Nicky Whelan and trying to nail Helen Kapalos.
