View Full Version : Honestly would you trust the AFL to preserve your club ?

If north took up the AFL's offer they would have to trust them 100% to support the club while it became established - and remember in the case of brisbane and sydney this took up to two decades - thats a lot of trust.
There have been many cases of the AFL going back on agreements eg hawks and saints moving to waverley only to have the rug pulled when they started to become really established there - about 6 years into a 30 year contract - ludicrous !!!
North have a recent example to draw on - now just one year into a three year contract for 3-4 games per year and now its all or nothing !!
Apart form the fact North abandoned canberra to take up this offer !
So now if north say no thanks they still have to play 2 years of 3-4 games in GC knowing (and the gold coast public knowing) they will leave for a qth team after that
They can't even tap into the groundswell of discontent and regroup as a pure victorian teams they still have to play 3-4 games annually in GC
These tricks are shafting North from underneath.
In your wildest dreams youd never trust the AFL that far.
Also remember last time deme pulled the '30 day' utimatum thing - it was to ch 7 for the TV rights - and that turned out to be a real shemozzle !!
My esti mation of deme has gone down bigtime.
Not they also waited for carlton to get out of the poo financially (with tainted dollars to boot)

They didnt do collingwood any favours when Eddie asked for help.
He said no thanks and never went back to them.
North should do the same
I wouldn't trust them to save my club from problems my club got itself into. I wouldn't expect them to.
But given the AFL want a team in the GC in 2010 and there's a fair bit of work that would need to be done before it happens - stadium development being the main thing - I don't see a problem with asking for a commitment now. What do people expect, in October 2009 they can be given the chance to say no and expect a new team to be created in a couple of months? With a newly reveloped stadium?
If the AFL want a team on the GC in 2010 they don't have a choice. A team needs to put it's hand up now.

Collingwood is the biggest club in Victoria and always had that potential. Norfs potential, the best they can be, is the 10th biggest club. Thats a road to oblivion. Fantasy world is where Norf fans live.

Yeah but you're forgeting that North supporters are decent :p.
I know a lot of people dislike or resent Eddie but you should hear him talk on this matter. We were in the poo and we had to get ourselves out of it. Obviously easier for us than North but the aim was not to get out of the poo but build a club that could sustain itself with, initially, wider reaching football revenue sources and the non football revenue. Also FWIW Eddie and Collingwood remember who refused to help us. One party in particular who then needed help themselves (not North).
The AFL wants a second team in QLD and will suppoirt it greatly. Its that simple. That support will continue as long as they have TV rights money to rely on. A second team garuntees good money from FTA TV in QLD. I would trust the AFL to support my team if I was a Roos supporter

If the North Melbourne shareholders choose to relocate the club, there will be at least 8,000 to 10,000 away team supporters less at all other home team games, in Melbourne. This will reduce revenue of gate money for all clubs, not to mention pies , hotdogs and beer sales. Will it have a reduction of sponsors, next time the tv rights come up will it be worth the same amount of money with less people watching the game. Then does that mean other teams will be in the firing line because 10,000 people aren't in the crowd, where does it end?
I don't understand the above post. Why will there be less supporters at other games?

If ( insert club here ) was playing a home game against a relocated North Melbourne in 2010 at the MCG how many opposition supporters would be in attendance? **** all! Good for football.

There won't be. A move to the GC will only make the TV rights more lucrative.

why do you think a relocation would make the tv rights more lucrative? do you think more people on the gc will watch a game as opposed to melb viewers?

Kangaroos supporters make up a small percentage of the Victorian TV market. Any loss through TV viewers in Victoria would more than be made up by a large gain of viewers in Queensland.

A city that large with a successful team can provide a windfall in terms of television ratings. It doesn't have to happen every year, but if you have one of Brisbane or Sydney up there it certainly helps, and the Gold Coast will provide a lesser version, but still in excess of what North in Melbourne will bring, as people down there will watch the footy regardless (less a few North supporters who may choke on their own bile and switch off for good).

Wow you can post an image. Good on you but you still haven't proven how it can. Prove it with your own facts not AFL stats.

I wouldn't trust the AFL. They seem to be in it for themselves, they dont look after the majority of the clubs as well as the tv holders.
1. They schedule games at Telstra instead of the MCG: Hawthorn vs Collingwood and Richmond vs Melbourne next year
2. They did everything they could to hurt 7. Even threatening to sue to them to help give Foxtel games. Also the scammed the footy public by going for a few million dollars extra instead of getting more coverage.
3. Foxtel some fans who are not well off have to decide between getting Foxtel to see there club play interstate or a membership and support their club
5. Western Australian and South Australia getting games blocked out that are not shown on Foxtel or fta.
6. Couldnt show the premilary final around the country live and the AFL's own ceo didnt care...
7. They rip off clubs as much as they can, look at Hawthorn and stating that Brisbane and Tasmanian games as joke.
8. Ignoring Brisbane's Fitzroy fans, instead of scheduling the most possible amount of games in Victoria, they even send Brisbane to Tasmainia instead.
9. Port Adelaide and heritage guernsey saga. If they aren't playing Collingwood what is the problem?
10. The unfair scheduling - Collingwood 18 games in Victoria each year and the so called Blockbusters. Yet Geelong vs Collingwood got one of the top crowds for the year for the home and away match.... yet they only play once next year.
I would recommend for North to stay in Melbourne, and if the other clubs are serious about growing the game overthrow the commision.

with regards to hawthorn i wouldn't trust the AFL, but i would trust tasmanian voters. 3mil per year for 5 years is already a steal - the federal government steps in to save their hospitals and they're paying 15 million for 4 games of AFL!
a tasmanian franchise isn't viable without BIG kick-ins from the tasmanina goverment. as long as hawthorn is playing down there we're safe. and if we get to the end of this 5 year deal without the AFL hijacking it, we will be safe permanently.

You are aware sydney has had a very rocky past and has not always got what it wanted from the AFL. In fact looking at the VFL?AFLs performance re: sydney and brisbane would make me run a million miles.
If you stay in melbourne you can always survive on your fans.
What would happen if the gold coast went pear shaped ? merge with the brisbane lions ? back to canberra or sydney ?
