I was checking out the 1992 team in the paper yesterday, and two things really struck me...

firstly, every single member of that team played at least 100 AFL games. (over their career, that is - not at the time of the 92 GF. Karl Langdon had the shortest career with 100.) I'd have expected at least a couple of 50-60 gamers who just happened to be around at the right time in there.

and secondly, only four of the team ever played for another club. the rest played their entire career at West Coast.

no wonder we won! :D

Those were the days huh? When Chris Lewis used to run across half forward causing havoc and Peter Matera had his wing that noone else ran along. Bluey, Jako, Woosha, Mcintosh and Monkey brennan were the best lot of defenders ever seen. We never anihalated alot of teams but we always stepped up in a big game. Noone was safe in that team..mirthfull mick ran a tight ship that mean business...if someone didnt pull their weight then they got a couple of weeks in the WAFL to have a think about it. I can remember in the grandfinal when it was only 5 minutes to go my Mum sent me to my room to watch the rest cause I was jumping up and down so much she couldnt hear the game. I remember my little sister cried cause she was a geelong fan at the time and I laughed!

It was great to see all 20 players and the coach were all their for the reunion Mitchell White came across from Geelong, and Chris Waterman is now an assistant coach at the Dockers. It's amazing how many of the rest are still involved in the club including Jakovich, McIntosh, Matera, McKenna, Worsfold, Sumich, Heady, Evans, and Pyke ( and there probably is more).

It was great to see the players in the same positions as the GF poster.

A couple of players commented that they didn't realise what champions they had in that side at the time........fair comment.

But in reality they weren't champions before they won it. In fact the Vics never expected it.

So, I think of todays squad, very young, but are they the champions of tomorrow........I hope so.

Monkey has stacked on the weight hey?

Good to see the boys get together again to cherish some wonderful memories.....

Just glad to see how much they love their jumper! :)

Actually what I really like is the fact that The West thinks our jumper important enough to justify a few column inches on the back page :D

You tend to look at things differently in retrospect. After watching the 92 GF again you realise how even the game was early, and how bad the umpiring was. Unlike the 94 GF, which was pretty much all one-way traffic, the game could have gone either way but for some pivotal performances by the likes of (to name 3) Matera, Evans and Heady (forgot how good he was in the second half)

You also realise how much some of the interpretations have changed in 10 years - holding, and using the elbow in shirtfronts for example.

PS: Turley: get a haircut you hippie!

****in oath the umpiring was shocking back then, and the pro-vic bias. The amount of times Gerard Healy says "If Geelong can just take out a few of the West Coast players...."

It was almost like admitting defeat, that we were better and the only way they could win was by eliminating players.

Speaking of players one of the most notable things about the premiership sides is that they did not have a weak link in them. Every player was good.

Just been slamming the old tape in the vcr, and watching it again, several things are apparent-
1.) The Umpiring was an absolute travesty- most serious was Don Pyke getting laid out and noone doing a freaking thing about it.

2.) I'd forgotten how much I hated Gary Hocking :)

3.) For my mind, my votes would be
3, Jakovich, 2. Matera, 3.Langdon.
Jako and Roo go without saying, but watching it again, I actually think Karl Krappy Hair played of the best games of his career.

I agree some people dont realise how much Langdon did in the Grand Final, a lot of off the ball hard work too.

I actually got a full page picture of Karl out of the paper, glued it to a cardboard backing and put it on a stick to wave at the surf club GF show.

At half time, (or might have been 1/4 time, not sure) I wrote "JOKE" across it and nailed it to the wall! Then in the third quarter I had to go and get it back again! Wish I'd kept it now.:D
