In the space of a couple of years he established himself as one of the flamboyant characters of the game. Ron Barassi simply described him as "different". When playing for Sydney his bizarre haircuts attracted attention and one involved the Opera House shaved on the back of his head and another bore his number - 39. When he made a calculated decision to be photographed as a cross-dresser it raised eyebrows in the football world. A Boronia boy he came from a non-sporting family and played most of his junior football in South Australia. After playing soccer as a kid he became a fine footballer and in Sydney was an attacking defender with great flair who played in the Swans' losing grand final side. In 1997 he crossed to Port Adelaide in the AFL which was ironic as he had started out with arch-enemy Norwood. His excuses for missing training were the stuff of legends at Port and although he later ended up with the Brisbane Lions, he eventually lost interest in senior football and finished up in Adelaide as captain-coach of an amateur side.
