More info on Darren Mead

Mead was a star with Port Adelaide when the club entered the AFL in 1997 and he won the club best and fairest in its inaugural season, as well as running third a year later.

A down to earth and loyal type, he had resisted offers from Essendon, Adelaide and Brisbane while waiting for Port to join the AFL and was philosophical about his late start, saying he had no regrets and that he may have had an injury if he'd started in the league earlier than he did.

A powerful centre half back who read the game well, he showed he was a thinking footballer. As flooding became a more frequently used tactic, he adapted well to handling the rotation of opposition key forwards, and remained a stalwart in the Port defence.

In 2001 he became the first Port Adelaide player to pass 100 AFL games with the club.

He had a steady 2002 season without being outstanding. A hamstring injury put him out of action in the run-up to the finals and although he returned in time he had limited impact in one finals appearance.

Following his retirement, Mead had a stint in football administration at South Adelaide and is currently coach of SA Amateur club Gaza (2007-08).
