The one thing I have noticed about the way we go about our footy is that we dont stick up for each other. We dont have anybody who wants to get under the oppositions skin physically( besides Will when he plays).
2 incidents stick in my mind where nothing was done when one of our players was dropped,
1) When Monty was cleaned up off the square by that weak little prick Holland in the Elimination in 2006.
2) Tommy Williams was decked by Casey Green late this year. At least Tom had a crack even when he was a bit groggy.
The addition of Callan and Hudson will add some much needed agression and attack on the footy. If we can get Will to control his aggression (and take a grab up fwd) and Addison to learn a few more smarts I think we will see a marked improvement in this area 2008.
Getting rid of blokes like Mcmahon and Power will hopefully have us return to the critter/libba/dimma/jose way of the playing footy.

I don't recall the Williams-Green incident but there was plenty of response to the Montgomery-Holland incident. Both McMahon and Power would still be there if the club had its 'druthers. Getting rid of them was their choice, not the club's. Mongrel isn't the way to go unless the attack is on the ball, not the man. Dimma, Libba and Jose were 10 years ago. They would be umpired out of the game now.

I believe there was adequate response to the Monty-Holland incident, but i do genuinely agree with you.
Quite a few times last season, Aker was getting it handed too him and had to go at it alone. The only player i EVER saw help him out was Skipper.
There needs to be attack at the ball, but i cant help but feel that when our players are pushed, they have to push back by themselves. Theres no camaraderie in that.
Something needs to be done, but im not sure what. Probably just needs a catalyst of 5 or 6 players to start helping each other out regularly for it to flow through the whole team.

Why is this guy always included with Jose and Libba as 'tough nuts'? Was it only because he was part of the "wog club"? It shouldn't be because of the way he played his football. Dimma was an honest battler, but did not have the same hardness in his game as the other two.

your right,
i wouldn't really call any of them hard nuts,
they were more players that liked to get into mental battles with the opposition. I couldn't recall an occasion that dimma or jose cleaned someone up pickett style.
Rick Kennedy, daniel southern, that's more of your hard nut type of player.
mitch hahn is probably the only tough physical player we have in our squad at the moment.
but funnily enough gia has been the only one to lay any decent bumps!

Libba not tough? Before he becames wallets hit man he was under every pack there was. Jose was a soft foward pocket player at north until he relised he wasnt going to make a career out of it.
They were mentally tough and didnt give a shit what people thought. They had a win at any cost attitude.
This was certainly an issue a few years ago. More to the point, our players used to drop their bundles after a push / punch up in the years when we were sh*thouse.
Although we're not the best at helping out fellow teammates in a push-up or when a player is receiving a bit of treatment, we're getting better. Holland's hit on Monty is a prime example. Instead of letting it affect us, we put scores on the board, which IMO is even more important than winning the punch-up (see Hawthorn's line-in-the-sand match).
Harris, Minson, R.Murphy gets involved... we're on the improve. Would be nice to have a Chris or Brad Scott though.

Did you read my post correctly???
If you did you would have seen that I had bolded the name Dimma from D Mitchell's post and wrote my first sentence about him. I did not say that I do not rate Libba and Jose as 'tough nuts', as I do.

ok, i get your point!
But I would rather have Dimma running around on the wing with his short passes hitting the dome roof then blokes like Eagle, McMahon, Power etc.. We need more blokes who have an "appetite for the contest" otherwise we never have any success.

mcmahon was actully regualy involved in scuffles. was good to see williams defend himself and who cares if he gave away the free he showed he wasn't gonna take any shit. shame no-one helped him.
same as when tiller was having a go with cousins and aker was being picked on. lift ya game boys. i bet Jose, Dimma and Libba are discusted in seeing that.

Gee that made me laugh. It's so true tho.
Brian Harris is our most intimdating player. I agree about no one helping Aker at times it didnt look real flash.
Its funny the only bloke weve had land one in recent times is a bloke who gets regularly criticized for his lack of aggression, that being the Eagle for a pretty good punch onTarrant.

I agree it's an area that needs to improve. Premiership teams march together as one, they're united like none other. Geelong this year was a prime example; they did everything as one. If one went down, they all did.
I can't remember which match it was, it may of been the one against Carlton, but a player had Akermanis down on the ground and Mitch Hahn was standing a few meters away and did nothing. Eventually he slowly made his way over and in the weakest of manners possible tried to separate them.
If that was Brisbane of 01-04, West Coast of 05/06 and Geelong of 07 it would of been a completely different scenario. The incident with Williams was another example. I don't know why they didn't want to stick up for each other, perhaps they fell in an early slump and couldn't get ouf of it. Who knows. But if we're going to go places, this whole 'team philosophy' needs to drastically improve. Morale is the most important thing at a football club; doesn't matter how talented you are. If you can't trust and believe in the bloke standing next to you, what hope do you have of success?
Here's hoping 2008 is entirely different.

Lets face it our current team compared to teams of the past and oppositions teams we are extremely weak.
Our attack on the ball, second efforts, desperation is lacking. We need a few more guys who give there all week in week out.

We'll have a coach who does more than orchestrate match days for one thing.
