TAC Cup flicked from MCG in revamp
The Age
Emma Quayle | November 11, 2007

THE AFL will establish eight new junior academies, replace the TAC Cup grand final with two national under-16 finals on the MCG on grand final day and completely revamp the under-18 championships as part of a raft of changes to the elite underage pathway program.

Recruiters will be able to assess second-division draft prospects against first-division sides under the new under-18 program, which will become a six-week series played in several states. Mark Ricciuto and Luke Darcy have accepted coaching roles with both the national AIS-AFL Academy and the new state-based programs.

etc ....

I thought the article as posted on the main board was a joke...seems I was wrong

I'm surprised Roo would commit himself to something like this so soon

Roo is one of the most respected MEN to have played the game, hopefully he has the smarts to pass on his ways to the newbies of the game.

Brilliant he is getting into coaching. Even if it is relativley minor at the moment. I look forward to his return as an assistant over the next few years.

It's good that we have Mark Ricciuto involved in the pathways program.

Some inside knowledge from him to the Crows would be great. :)

Wow! These are massive changes.

Yeah - I'm not even sure I understand it. The national under 18's championship is becoming more year round? Is that right?

Surprises me that he has taken on a coaching role when he repeatedly said coaching didn't interest him. Thought he was going to Italy for the year next year too? Anyways, good luck to him. Hope it's something he enjoys.

Jenny - he has said that he is not sure if coaching is for him. This is a good way for him to dip his feet in the water and see if he has what it takes. It is always the best when starting a coaching career to be involved in a program with good coaches around you and it seems that is what Roo has done here.

To those that are thinking that he will automatically make a good coach, please be aware that most top athletes actually make the worst possible coaches. It is the rare few that can participate well at the top level and then make the transition to a good coach.

Agreed it makes the best sense to go at it from this angle.. just surprised because I think we've asked him a couple of times and he was quite emphatic in his response that he had no interest. I also agree with you that being a great player doesn't automatically instill in you the makings of a great coach. Not only do you have to be a great communicator, and teacher of football, you also need to be a strong tactician and team manager. I think Luke Darcy will be a good coach. Not so sure about Roo. It's a bit like Darren Jarman (one of my favs)... he isn't such a great coach because his footy was instinctive... you can't teach someone how to be a freak. I put Roo in this category - he was just so instinctive - a genius at work. If it could be taught (instinctiveness) we'd have many more legends of the game than we do.
