Lets get those positive juices flowin with your recollections of the Greatest H&A victories you've been fortunate enough to witness the Mighty Blues achieve. No Finals please, as EVERY Finals victory is great!
This years R3 victory over Essendon was as special as i can remember - 7 goals down and all.:D
'92 win over WCE was a pretty amazing game too. They'd won something like their first 12 straight, we'd lost SOS to a knee earlier in the game and Minton-Connell slotted the winner. Amazing scenes on the terraces.:thumbsu:
Other magic memories?
what year was the game where mainwairing kicked the post!!
that was a great game!!
and i remember in 1997 or 98 that we were the only team to beat adelaide twice. But the away game in adelaide where Brown and Murphy were on fire was great. Coz we didnt have such a great year!

91 wasn't it? The great Darren Tarczon was insperational.
There was one when i was a kid vs Nth Melbourne at Princes Park - back in about '87 (?) i think, in the Wayne Johnston days. I can barely remember but knew we were gone for all money and Johnston inspired us to slap on 3 goals in the last 4 minutes to steal it - place erupted..
We also had a couple of awesome wins in Perth in the '90s. Remember when Earl Spalding smashed Guy Mckenna in the opening seconds in the match at the end of '95 which we won by a point after being pushed all game.
And also in Sydney Greg Williams (for Swans) busted Rhys-Jones jaw with a savage uppercut at the bottom of a pack. Rhys kept playing anyway and we won.
(some details here might be off from my hazy memories).

It was 2004 IIRC.
We went on to win our next two games after that (Richmond and Hawthorn) making it the first time in a long time that we won 3 games in a row.
At the time it was seen as the turning point that marked the beginning of the end of the dark days...of course in reality, that's where we are at now :)

The game against Adelaide where Fev kicked the goal from outside 50 to win the game.
2001 against Essendon - No Silvagni, No Bradley, No Kouta. Nelson and Culpitt ran a muck that day.

Can't remember the round but in 1995 we beat the weagles by a point at Subiaco and I happened to be within earshot of the Spalding-McKenna crunch.
One of the best games of footy I've ever been to in a h & a season.
Also at Subi when Mainwaring hit the post a couple of years earlier but the 1995 match was the rated the best match of the year.

No doubt for me the 94' match against WCE at Princes Park. Both top of the table teams, Blues won by bugger all, might have even been only one point.
Braddles out ran Matera with a one, two, down the wing and dobbed a banana from the boundry about 53m out. Happened right in front of me and is still my favourite ever piece of play.

Spot on, R 14 1991. Tarzan, playing only his 3rd game, when summoned on from the bench proceeded to split Bluey McKenna straight down the middle with a vicious shirtfront. Got hammered a few time against the Blues did old Bluey.:D

2 of my fav's as well, Blue Dimension.
A memorable one for me was I went up to Sydney to watch us v Swans, I think it was Mintie's first game against us and we were down, which was quite embarressing, and Dorra was moved into the forward line, kicked a few goals and got us over the line.
Oh and any from the 90's v Eagles pretty much, they were awesome games.

Agree with:
vs Dons this year
vs WCE in 1995I'd have up there a game vs Hawks at PP in '93.
The week before Sticks had kicked a helicopter vs Dons that cost us the game, then backed up with a great game and, yes, you guessed it, another kick from 50m out to win the game .........nailed it........LEGEND!:thumbsu:
Got glandular fever after that............:(

It was 2004. I was fortunate enough to be there.
I have spoken of this game on several occasions on this board.
I was in the top deck of that stand behind the goals in the last qtr, still brings a smile to my face when i think of it today.
3rd greatest win i have ever seen, greatest H & A victory i have ever seen.
I think it was round 16, 1998. A friday night match in Adelaide. The boys played with heart and a never say die attitude, and pulled off a ripper win.

:D round one 1980 vs. collingwood at collingwood--- wayne johnson was BOG with 7 goals from hff-- he just countn't miss as the dominator kicked laser-like left footers from 50, on the run, from the boundry, one from a real ''hanger'' & another from a brutal smother of the boot of a pie defender---maylin & perovic played there debut games--the game was even telecast on a big sceen live at the city square where a decent carlton crowd locked out gathered :thumbsu:

Any game where we beat the bummers is a great game...
the 95 game in Perth against the weagles was a great match. The weagles fans at the ground couldnt believe that they lost. but there was no agro towards the Carlton fans in the crowd.
Was manic leaving the place as well...

Games that really standout in my mind were;
Colllingwood vs Carlton Round 7 2004: We we're five goals down halfway through the last quarter and Davis kicked 3 in about 5 mins and we won it and was sitting with the collingwood social club
Carlton vs Essendon round 3 2001: No SOS, kouta, Bradley and Allan and we won it.
Carlton vs West Coast 1996: Kouta 18 marks, 36 touches we won by a point love that game.
and noticable games
Carlton vs Essendon round 3 2003: We had gone through all that crap in the off season and to win that game was like winning a final.
Carlton vs Collingwood 2000: 111 points we kicked 19 goals in the second half and the Pisshead (Hotton) kicked 5
Carlton vs North Melbourne 2000: That in my view was the best game i had ever seen kouta play and the best game i have ever saw a player in the AFL play in my life, 38 touches and 5 goals

Ahhhhh 1981. Was a ripper for Mr Magic, he kicked the Goal of the Year against Geelong in the Semi-Final too.
Another one which comes to mind is that amazing final round in 1987 where a number of matches to decide the Finalists went right down to the wire. This included our game vs North at Waverley which was a cracker and wasn't decided until Kernahan converted after the siren!
Was pretty bloody important as it secured us top spot which gave us the easy run through the Finals - pretty useful on GF day when the weather was a scorcher. :thumbsu:

1988 vs Essendon at Windy Hill. Played crap in the 1st half and were down by a couple of goals at half-time. Came back out and in true Carlton style turned it on in the 3rd and ending up kicking 14 goals to 1 in 2nd half. Won by 72 and it was vintage Blues.
This year v the scum in round 3 when fev kicked 8. Cant stop going on youtube and watching his video it was awesome to see us reel them in and shatter some scum supporters hearts.

In no particular order:
1987 - North Melb @ VFL Park Rd 22. Had to win to secure the vital top spot back in the days of the final 5 and get the week off. It was a hot day from memory and the game went down to the final seconds. Siren sounds, ball in Kerhanan's hands.....he lines it up and kicks truly. Bluebaggers minor premiers and earn a week off which set up our premiership. Kernahan well and truly signals his arrival as a champion leader and pressure performer.
1989 - beat Collingwood by 6pts at VFL Park. A young Andrew Phillips snapped a great goal from the pocket to win the game. Sadly back related hamstring problems prevented him from ever reaching his full potential with the Blues.
1991 - WCE @ PP. Tarczon's bump, Minton-Connell's goal. WCE winning streak of 12 games broken. Magic!
1992 - Collingwood @ MCG Thurs night - Centenary Game. Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet! We came off a 4 day break (we played the Bulldogs at the MCG the previous Sunday). Everyone was saying it was just a matter of how far Collingwood. They crapped on about how great they were before the game and how it was their Centenary celebrations. Crowd was 2/3rds Pies and we sh1t on them and spoilt their party. Kernahan with 7 goals was inspirational, even Cavedon played well! One of our finest wins ever against the old enemy.
1993 - Hawthron @ PP. After Sticks shanked the shot after the siren the week before the pressure was very much on the great man. This game highlighted what made him a champion and the greatest leader in AFL history. A lesser man would have crumbled, but Sticks lead from the front, slotted 6 and nailed the match winner from 50 out with seconds remaining. Kernahan at his finest.
1994 - Bulldogs @ MCG. Whilst this was a whitewash on the scoreboard. Stick kicked an unbelievable 10.7!! And left the field for a rest with 15mins to go. If he had of kicked straighter and played the game out he could easily have had 15 or 16.
1994 - WCE @ PP. Took back top spot, spanked the Eagles by 64 pts, Bradley kicked goal of the century, Kernahan smashed Jakovich and Princes Park was jam packed and rocking! PP at its best!
2001 - Essendon @ MCG Rd 3. No SOS, Bradley, Kouta or Matty Allan. No one gave us a hope against the all conquering Dons. Dermie summed it up when he said they should erect a plaque at Royal Parade to commenorate that victory.
2001 - Essendon @ MCG rematch. Had to follow this one on the internet from the USA, nearly broke the keyboard! Lappin was awesome and we got up again in a close one against the enemy.
2004 - Adelaide @ AAMI. A rare win in SA in the 2000's. Fev was brilliant. That last goal was just amazing.
2007 - Essendon @ MCG. The Comeback. Haven't hugged other males that much since we beat them in the 1999 Prelim!

I'll have a go. The 90's
1991 r14 v West Coast x3 points.
Been discussed.
1992 r6 v St Kilda x 8 points.
Huge crowd at Princes Park 35k, down by 4 goals at the half,
Rhino went berserk and kicked 4 in the third quarter, Dorotich onto Plugger
(6 in the first half), Kernahan kicked the sealer with a 50 metre banana.
1993 r3 v Hawthorn,
Kernahan kicks the sealer the week after his shank. Stood in front of the scoreboard, one of those bright days where you couldn't see the other end,
didn't stop this Hawthorn pelican disputing every decision from 200 yards.
Kernas goal shut him up. Happy beers at the Fenwick.
1993 r14 v West Coast x 1 point,
Mainwairing hits the post after the siren? Kid called Oliver look fantastic.
1994 r22 v West Coast, monstered them at home by 10 goals.
1995 r12 v Geelong x 3 points, thriller all day.
1995 r21 v West Coast x 1 point,
Spalding sents McKenna into orbit.
Think Kerna knocked out little Ronnie Delulio with some friendly fire.
1996 r5 v West Coast x 1 point, Koutas game.
1998 r16 v Adelaide (reigning premier and at Footy Park) x 4 points, a week after getting smashed by Richmond, and down by 4 goals at quarter time.
1999 r17 v Collingwood x 10 goals,
Beaumont goes bunta and nails 8 in the first half.

Good get! This one is definitely in my top 10 too. Cracking match with the Blues sparked by their two young HFF heros in 'Rotten' Ronny DeIulio (3 goals) and, my favourite, the 'Rhiiiiiiiiinnnoooooooo' Luke O'Sullivan with 4 sharp ones in a pulsating 3rd quarter! Dorra's stop on Plugger was sensational even though the big fella still managed to flatten Hogg right on the final siren.
For mine, this victory was a sure sign that this young team was now ready to play finals even though we missed out that year despite winning 14 of our first 20 matches!

The game was in Rd 14 and WCE were undefeated on top of the ladder. The first half of that season they were as unstoppable as any team in AFL history. Given we struggled that year and finished 11th it was very much the upset of the season. WCE grew weary as the season went on and as history shows got rolled twice by the Hawks in the finals.

Yep, the review should definitely highlight how dominant the undefeated Eagles had been up to that point. Also, despite no mention in the report, my memory is telling me that we achieved this major upset despite seeing SOS, i think in the 2nd Q, flying for a mark up forward and doing his knee! If my memory is correct, and perhaps others can confirm or otherwise, this info could certainly be added.:thumbsu:

As well as the last game against Collingwood at Princes Park, just because we humiliated the Pies and the game where that dog Milburn hit SOS, not sao much for the game but the reaction of the Carlton crowd, that was true home ground support.

Agree re those WCE specials. Could be as many as 3 or 4 narrow victories over them through the mid 90's included on the shortlist.
Don't agree about that R22 match vs Geelong in 2001. In so far that, despite smashing them by 70 pts, it was a disastrous match for us. Geelong went the body, Milburn and two others reported for charging, and losing Ratten to that elbow injury effectively stuffed our upcoming finals campaign.
Maybe we should include that 'last of the suburban battles' spanking of the Pies. The only real memory i have of that day is marveling at Aaron Hamill determined hunting of opponents across HF - and he did it relentlessly ALL DAY despite the fact we won by 20 goals!:thumbsu:

Certainly wasn't the tightest of results but the mid season smashing of Hawthorn in '95 was a pretty important victory i feel. We'd gone from luscious, sweet chocolate to boiled lollies losing our previous two matches to the struggling Swans and Saints - a statement needed to be made!
And made a statement was with a fired-up Blues dismembering the opposition right from the opening bounce to lead by 44 pts at quarter time. We went on to win by 102 pts reminding everybody, including ourselves, of the style of footy we needed to play to win the flag that year. :D:thumbsu:

one of my favourite games was the round 22 match in 2001 against geelong, held them goaless for the last three quaters. the thing that i love about this match is that it shows the true meaning of a team. franchina does a hammy and ratts does his elbow so the rest of the team lifts their work rate up kouta and bradley step up to the plate and get a lazy 32 each and young jimmy plunket picks up 24 touches. however, and this is what the team is missing at the moment, the emotion came in as s.o.s gets knocked out by milburn. there were players running form every corner of the ground to support s.o.s, there were even supporters ready to jump the fences to get milburn, there was one guy jumping all over the bench going ballisitic. its this kind of passion and mateship that this great club is known for and what we are lacking now. do you remember when scottland got knocked out by didak, fev was the ony player to stand up for his mate and half the crowd thought nothing of the incodent, in an interview with milburn a while ago he said he had never been more scared in his life when he knocked s.o.s out, he had to be escorted back to his car coz of the supporters love for their team. we have always been a team orrientated club but where has it gone, no players stund up for eachother and most of the supporters have lost their love for the club. so this game resembled what, to me, the carlton football club is all about.

If the chat on this forum after that "bump" was anything to go by, the crowd thought far from nothing about it.
You are right about the team response though........took them a year to start the fight.........and even then it took Rocca to knock Fraser out.:o

Yeah, we went out to Vic Park but couldn't get in.
Headed into the city to watch in the city square from outside The Graham(?) pub in Swanston Street. Great beers and a great game from Johnno.
This was after winning the flag in '79 and all the ruckas over summer after Jezza, President G. Harris quit after being voted down by the members.
First game for the season, big, big, build up and Collingwood would have thought they they were red hot to knock us off!

Spot on with the name of the pub. I remember it was the only pub with a peanut machine, 20cents in the slot and it spat a handful of nuts into a small white bag. That "Black Matrix" Screen was hilarious. At the time it was considered so high-tech, all it did was show grainy images in black and yellow. It would be looked upon now as the equivalent of Space Invaders technology.
Yeah, watched a few games from that pub looking across Swanston Street, often staggering onto the footpath glass in hand. Some memories of Melbourne are better (and clearer) than others. :)

I Remember a game against Essendon in 84/85?? where we hadnt beaten them for ages & we absolutely pumped them at PP. About the only part of the game I remember is when Rod Ashman drilled a torpedo from about 65m out to put us a fair way in front. I think we ended up winning by about 5 or 6 goals.

Thank you for mentioning this game. Probably doesn't get the recognition it deserves, but i guess our numerous GF humilations over the years of the Colliwobbles take precedence!
My old man still talks in religious tones of The Dominators performance this day, which was magnified all the more given the off field drama that unfolded following our famous 1979 premiership. Johnston may not have been all that fussed with dreary games mid-season at the likes of Moorabbin and he missed numerous games with injuries....BUT one thing was for certain get the bloke in a finals game or a big match with a huge build up like Rd 1, 1980 against the arch-enemy Collingwood and the guy turned into Superman.
Does anyone know if blueseum has a good article on the 1979 off field drama? Compulsory reading for young Blues fans and puts the magnificance of our 1981/82 premierships in a whole new light.

That was a great game l remember getting a stubby thrown at me by these feral Pies supporters - all's we were doing was sticking it up them. Me and my mates got chased down some of the lanes before we caught the bus home in Johnston St. We were written off before the first bounce with all the turmoil over summer with the Harris sacking and Jezza going to the Saints.
1981 Vs Richmond we we flogged the reigning premiers by 10 goals at Waverley - handy debut by Hunter and Bosustow.
2007 Vs Essenscum when we came back back from 8 goals down to beat the su*ks.
1988 Rd 20 Vs Nth when kicked 4 goals in time on to get up by a point. Johnnos and Madden cut them up. I think Luke O'Sullivans first game and he gave out the final handball to Gleeson who kicked the winning goal then the siren went.
2000 the last game we played the Pies at Princes Park and we flogggeed them.
2001 Rd 3 Vs Essenscum - when we had Braddles and a couple of other guns pull out before the game and we still beat the buggers.
1981 Vs Swans whne we kicked 10 goals in teh first quarter and the Buzz when balistic and he took 3 screamers that day. I can still remember Rod Carter leaning up against the goal post leaning his head against it in frustration.
1984 Rd 1 Vs Nth - Warren Ralph kicked 8 on debut, other handy first gamers included Blackwell, Alvin, Murphy and Honeybun.
1982 Vs Richmond (around Rd 18 - 19) - we got pumped by the Swans the week before and were written off. The tiges were flying and favourites and we came out and knocked them over in a physical game. Glascott was stretchered then Jimmy Buckley returned the favour and knocked out one of those feral b*stards.

Sartori and Kernahan destroyed Geelong's backline with 15 goals between them. I was there and thought that this forward line would win us multiple premierships. But sadly Sarts injuries never allowed this to occur.

There's been so many.
Ones that stand out inc ...
- the day Kouta took 15-17 marks against WC when we won by just a point or two
- the day Kouta dominated against the Swans (men against boys I think Gary Lyon said)
- I think there was a game against WC (maybe) when they were on top and we were down the bottom and we won by 1 point maybe, I think Minton-Connell bagged a goal near the boundary. Even though we were nobodies that year that was an incredibly emotional win

We were gonnnnnnneeeee with a few minutes to play then Harry Madden won the last 3 or 4 hits out to Johnston and l think Bradley and we just went bang, bang, bang BANG - it was definetly the last 3 maybe 4 goals. l was standing in front of the Pratt stand and it was like a training drill as we were kicking to the Heatley stand end.
There would have been no more than 10 seconds to go with the last bounce and (from memory) Harry smashed the ball to Johnno who banged it onto his trusty left foot.
It hit the pack Luke O'Sullivan (wearing No.41) first touch l think in senior footy picked the ball up.
Gleeson was running full tilt towards goal got the handball and snagged it from 20 metres out straight in front and then the siren went.
Fantastic game.

Thats the game alright l am pretty sure it was Glascott who was knocked cold in front of about bay 13 by Jimmy Jess. A quarter or two later Buckley knocked out one of their running brigade with a fair hip and elbow. :D
l think "Postman" Buckley was best on ground and may have kicked one of his trademark 50 - 60m torpedo goals on the run running out of the centre towards the Ponsford end where l was sitting.
I will add but maybe over summer sometime.
I used to collect that much footy stuff its not funny and there would be a fair chance that l have Inside Football paper from that game tucked away. Conservatively guessing l would have 60 - 70% of the original Inside Football papers from the 70's to the mid 80's. These were the perks of being a paperboy for a busy city newsagency when i was at primary school and first few years at high school.
l have about 25 - 30 scrap books just on Carlton from about 1979 to 1985 plus a whole folder of original glossy photos of a Carlton function in the 1950's. This last one was given to me by a guy who used to work at my old work who played 3 games for Carlton in the 1950's - Johnny Blake.
I still have photocopies of every Monday Sun article on the Carlton games of the 1979 season. My former boss took these for a friend who went back to live in Italy for that season and did it as a favour for him.
I will contact you over summer and find out the best way to get this information to you, l can try and scan and send to you as well as type in some of the stats e.g. goalkickers / best players etc.
Finals records - l have every Carlton one between 1968 to 1999. Hundreds of footy records from the 60's, 70's & 80's. More footy cards than you can poke a stick at etc. My missus hates it (she's a kiwi) but l will share the infromation if you want. Just contact me as l will be putting all this stuff into storage soon as we have lost about a third of our back bedroom

Offers like that are a godsend to the Blueseum. At the end of the day, all we are is a bunch of Carlton fans who want to write, restore, manage and promote the history of the Club. The morons from other Clubs can rant and rave all they want but they'll never come close to what we have, so any scrap books or pictures or memories are always welcome.
Even better is if you could register and help us write it all up. In the end there's 10 or so really committed tragics and about 30-40 others who help out when they can. People with memories, time and commitment are always welcome.
And as for timing - history can wait! Its what we do. Over summer we're hoping to download a 1968 scrapbook complete with over 100 photos from the press. If we could some more scrapbooks over that time, we're laughing.
Anything you can add would be appreciated.
Feel free to PM this identity on any of the Carlton forums to follow up - it all feeds back to the right people.

In relation to the scrap books they are in player order rather than the year (except for 1979). Let me know the best way, l may even have to purchase a scanner - talk soon.
Cheers
