Came over with fellow SA recruit Beau Waters as a highly rated midfielder drafted at no.20 overall (thanks largley to giving Geelong David Haynes and pick 42). A Rising star nominee, Butler is seen as a key ingredient to a healthy WC midfield and has shown tremendous promise, particularly in 2006 where he played in a losing premiership side. Unfortunately Butlers 2007 season was cut short without getting a game by a nagging groin injury. Watch out for the return of Sam in 2008 where a healthy pre-season should easily get this solid player back into this starting 22. Midfield coach Peter Sumich has gone on record to rate Sam Butler very highly and the Eagles will need him fit more than ever in 2008 with the loss of Cousins and Judd.

Whats the word on Butler? Is he training yet? Is he fit. Very important player now IMO.

Very unfortunate that we didn't get to see him play this year, hopefully that's the end of his groin troubles for a while coz we need him fit and firing for next season with the obvious loses.

Oh.. please be fit and healthy in 2008.

Can't wait to see him play in 2008. Has anyone seen him recently?

One of my colleagues plays for Perth, when not injured. :D

I'll ask him tomorrow how Butler is doing.

I must do Sammys pic and stats also. :thumbsu:

Be interesting to see how Sam goes this year.

After a terrible year with injury last year, this is his chance to cement himself in the midfield with no Judd or Cousins. I really do think that some peoples expectations of him are a little too high at the moment, this is a bloke who has missed a year of senior footy and will take a little time to find his groove but when he does i think we could see the makings of a great player for our club.

Hopefully he can stay on the park and this will be the year when he establishes himself to everyone in the league not just the WCE fans and coaches.

yeah we are expecting alot from him but thats due to what he has shown in the past and the comments from the coaching staff. suma gave him a big wrap a few weeks back. He would know being the mid coach.

I know how good he is and how highly we rate him and how good he could be. It is just a matter of giving him time to develop into that terrific midfielder. I have no doubt by round 6-7 he will be playing some excellent football.

We just need to be wary of pumping up young players as saviours now that Cuz and Judd have gone.

I dont think that can be avoided. we are lucky that the club is so successful but then that makes the supporters expect success and great performances from every player no matter where they are at.

no doubt, cant replace judd and cuz but butler has the skills and the brain to create a very good reputation for himself and release some of the pressure kerr will be under.

Sorry boys, cant help out on the info.

Seems that Sammy only trains with WC during the preseason, not his WAFL club Perth.

Heres hoping he breaks back into the side - injury free, a silky performer. :thumbsu:

The commentators are going to have a field day this year, sammy is going to throw up some great lines, such as :

"and butler cleans up again"
"and Judd just got served by butler"
"And butler gets the crumbs again"

Im tipping a great year from sammy, with a free spot now in our midfield i believe he will step up.
