View Full Version : Should we get Carey?

Jacko said in today's West that Wayne Carey would be welcome here. What would/might we have to give up to get him? Do we want him?

I think that he would solidify our spine for 4 years to come.

Any thoughts?

Would Rowan Jones have to give up his number? :p

Jak's hardly going to say otherwise, is he?

I haven't seen the article in the paper but i saw Jak on the tube last night. he said that he would rather be playing with him than against him. read what you like into that.

while we have had a good year so far we are still a young and developing team. i think that careys services would be better utilised at a club that needs just a few players to make it a premiership side. ie Adelaide.

or Carlton could just buy another used player.

The intra-club matches would draw one hell of a crowd (and as usual they would witness a Carey thrashing at the hands of Jak).

But no, I don't think we should draft Carey. He's old and two weeks into the season he would break down again.

P.S. Carneagles, I rate the avatar very highly.

Depends if we could get him cheap or not. I suspect that even though a lot of clubs are saying they won't touch him, they would jump at him if the opportunity arose and price was right.

You wouldn't really want to give away any early draft picks, and at the same time wouldn't want to take too much out of the salary cap. If a deal is done that takes both of these into account, I wouldn't complain.

Apparently the Roos owe him about $600k. Some sort of deal maybe be able to be done here without giving up early draft picks. Maybe we could offload Carroll, Taylor, Munro or Harding. They took David Bourke a few years ago, maybe they can be hoodwinked again?

No.

Period.

Too expensive, too old, too disruptive, not hungry enough, not in the right frame of mind.

All Jako said was he'd rather play with him than against him - i.e. he was being polite about an old and respected adversary.

The Roos took Bourke last year.. I think it will be a 1 year stand.. he hasnt broken into the snr side yet, and doesnt look like he will.. think he'll be delisted...

The Roos would take Judd.. I am sure:D He could come HOME.. to Vic:D

Go Roos

One word:

NO

Why:
* His best football is behind him
* Negative image on the club that picks him up
* Could affect the relationship with team-mates
* Was affected by injuries late in his career
* Better to bring up a rookie at CHF
* Too many distractions on field, could blow his fuse (... again :D )
* Have to pay him big bucks
* Ricky Nixon would be hanging around him like a bad smell

Jako's comments were taken totally out of context, hence all the talk.

Nope, as most of you have said, his best is behind him and he'd be asking too much

However, i hope he does play with another club... no matter what you say about him the guys a legend (even if he is an arrogant bastard)

He could always go to Carlton. It's not like Brett Ratten would have anything to worry about.

If we were going to trade for a CHF I would much rather go after Tredrea. He is young, athletic, has a great pair of hands, reads the game well and most importantly was an Eagles fan as a kid (I remember Dennis' comments at the time calling for a Supporter - son rule). He's probably out of our sights at he minute, but if the right deal came up I think he'd be great for us.

NO..

He is injury prone, has a bad image and is now old.

He would just get in the way of the development of one of our young talls like Gaspar, Lynch, McDougall etc etc...

We'll already have a 31 year old at FF (no disrespect meant for Willo - I wouldn't dare:D). However to put a 32 year old at CHF would be a very Carlton like move. Even if we need a CHF I would much rather see a young guy in the position.

The other important question is could Carey even win the position all that often any more. With all his injuries and his age causing likely restricted movement I'd expect that he would be lucky to win 1 week in 3. And I can't see him accepting the minimum wage to do it.

The only clubs I can see having a use for Carey would be currently strong clubs with aging lists that want one last tilt at a premiership before they head down the ladder again (ie Adelaide). Even than they might be looking at a backup key position player rather than their main CHF.

WEST COAST EAGLES

fair call.

but i think we are still a few years off being a hardcore premiership favourite. we have come along in leaps and bounds this year but we still need development out of gasper, hunter, haynes, embley, glass etc.

that's not to say we can't pinch one in the next 1 or 2 years. i would love for jak, milli and roo to get their 3rd medallion.

i reckon Sydney will have a dig for him - would be a huge promotional move for them considering the Lockett comeback fell flat

I wouldn't mind seeing him at the Eagles if he was paid as much as players like Phil Matera, Merenda etc.

At 32 he is not worth the big bucks he used to get.
