View Full Version : Who should bat at #7 in the ODI side in the short to medium term?

I think it's safe to say that the top 6 is pretty settled. Barring sudden retirements, Gilly, Hayden, Ponting, Clarke, Symonds and Hussey are now automatic selections. No immediate question marks or vacancies there. They're all stars of the game.
So who bats at #7?
In recent times, Hopes, White, Watson and Haddin have all had a sniff.
It seems the selectors want some extra bowling, but Hussey started his career at #7, so that spot hasn't always been the province of an all-rounder.
Anyone batting that low needs to be able to score quickly, but also needs to be steady enough to pull of the occasional rescue mission.
There are a few candidates currently, and a few emerging players who might have a crack in the next 18 months if the batting order gets re-jigged following some retirements.
For mine, James Hopes is at the front of the queue.

Brad Haddin.
Let him keep, take the strain off gilly.
40 overs from your bowlers.
10 from clarke & symonds.

I'd like to give Noffke a go but Hopes has done nothing wrong.

or even Ronchi, with a view of sending him up the order when gilly retires.

Noffke for sure.
If not, Bichel or...Ian Harvey. ;)

That's not nearly good enough to get him into the side unless he is the first choice keeper.
with a strikerate of about 500.....

Either Watson or Butterworth. Even McDonald when he can get back to bowling is a chance.

Noffke - our top six get the job done more times than not; no point having another pure batter whose only going to bat for a couple of overs most games, if at all.
Another bowler would give us more value.
Following that thread, him or Haddin.

Following that thread, him or Haddin. Well, which is it?
Do you want another bowler or a second keeper-batsman?
Brad Haddin.

I agree about Clarke and Symonds bowling those 10 overs but Phil Jaques anyone? Not even an option for the poll. He might not bat at no. 7 but definitely deserves a spot somewhere in there.

So if he gets a spot "somewhere in there", one of the current top six will bat at #7. That is an option in the poll.

An opening batsmen who can't bowl or field won't be batting 7.
Hopes for mine, earnt the job in India, underrated cricketer.
Gotta be Hopes first up. Selectors turned to him in India and were rewarded when he bowled tidy spells and scored quickly coming in late throughout the series.
Lets see how he goes on home turf now. If he's crap vs NZ then look at someone else.

I'd expect it to be Hopes or Watson given the selectors apparent desire to have a bit more bowling in the side. Hopes did well in India and probably deserves to keep his place.
If you're looking for an off the wall idea though, why not Gilchrist at 7?
Gilly and Hayden are getting on and it can hardly be desirable to have both of your opening pair walk off into the sunset at roughly the same time. Picking the same top 7 as in the recent test series against Sri Lanka would allow Jaques to settle at the top of the order and the balance of the team wouldn't have to change when Haddin comes in for Gilchrist.

My top are
White, Hussey, Noffke, Voges, Pomersbach
I hope my first 3 get a gig in the next 12 months

If you're looking for an off the wall idea though, why not Gilchrist at 7?Because Gilly is a match-winner as an opening bat.
He will open for the remainder of his ODI career.

Noffke, White or Hopes. I'm not totally sold on White's bowling, though.

I'd rather have Clarke bowl 4-5 overs than use White.

Lol yeah that's what i'm not sold on. He can, however, be an explosive batsman.

White's great for 20/20, or for coming in late when setting a target and smashing the ball round, plus he's good in the field.
But his bowling's useless and last year he let us down when our side needed rescuing late chasing scores.
He's a fair way from returning to the one day squad i reckon. Gives us nothing at #7 too where we need more of a bowling all-rounder.

Well it won't be White for the Chappell Hadlee.

Looks like it's between Hopes and Haddin at this stage.

I have a feeling it will be either Hopes, Haddin or Watson (selectors just love him), this would give us more flexablitiy but i was wondering what you guys think about Jaques? How about moving Gilchrist down to seven and opening with Jaques and Hayden? Jaques is definatley the best batsmen not in the ODI side, why pick another all rounder when we already have capeable bowlers (Symonds and Clarke) to finish off the other ten overs.

Too weak, need a bowling all-rounder, not another batsman. Jaques will be a ready made replacement for Hayden when he retires from ODIs eventually.
Hopes for now. Him, Watson or even Noffke in the longer term will hold #7.

How about moving Gilchrist down to seven and opening with Jaques and Hayden?Gilly is an absolute matchwinner at the top of the order. That's been proven over and over again.
Why do people always latch onto this idea of demoting him?
He'll open the ODI batting for the rest of his career, and rightly so.

With White injured, it has to be Noffke.
I'd love to see David Hussey get a crack at international level sometime soon though

Because they're fags. If he didn't keep, he would open the batting in Test Cricket.

Because White would have been such a lock otherwise?
Pffffttt...
And why does it have to be Noffke who comes in?
He's done SFA in ODDs this season.
Why should he leapfrog someone like James Hopes?
