View Full Version : GM: Danny Meyer's season long hip injury worse than originally thought

For those still unsure after the swarm of rumours, Danny Meyer has signed a 1 year deal and Greg Miller has made it public that he was carrying a hip injury all year that was worse than the club thought.
Now I distinctly remember hearing that Danny told the club about his injury early in the year and he was told to play through it. All year he has struggled and his reputation has taken a hit among some Tiger fans. Well turns out Danny had every right to be angry at the RFC - he was right all along about the mis-diagnosed injury.
Now that his injuries have been confirmed by the club, will some of you guys feel more confident in him becoming a good player for us?
Personally, I simply expect a fit and built-up Meyer to be a good player for us, and 2008 will hopefully be his year.

If a player says he's sore or somethings not right, surely the club should listen to him? I think its silly of a club to just say suck it up and play through it without fully understanding the whole situation.
I mean if the player is just tired from running or 2nd efforts, then yes, suck it up and keep going....but if the player thinks theres seriously something wrong with the knee or the hip or whatever, its silly to just brush it off as if its nothing isnt it?

i never paid him out.
but i hope he has a big 2008 and shoves it up all who ever said he was a dud and would never make it.
will be good to see another of our top draft picks developing and showing well and truly why we drafted them

I havent been a slagger, more a doubter.
I knew he had a prob but thats his problem.
He can have no excuses next year or he'll be the next Hall with his hip. i.e. have a nice day we dont need your excuses.
You have to show something before you can claim injuries.
But most of all Richmond injury staff are well known to say "you'll survive, just play through it." Maybe they neeed to wake up more.
But overall no matter what the case Meyer needs 12 games minimum or he's gone next year. Good luck chief.

Huge?
Just a solid year would suffice for me. Establish himself with 15-20 senior games, and maybe a Top 15 in the B&F would be a great outcome.
Nobody needs a huge year in 2008 to ensure their survival on our list. Most just need significant improvement.

Am official number one fan... but reports of poor attitude links with this injury news.
I am almost certain that perseverance will pay off with Danny. He has class. If we give Schulz time, then Danny deserves to at least get over his injury and have a decent crack at it.

Dude you wrote this 8 hours ago...
It would spell the end for putting up with lazy and immature players like Meyer, who in a top 4 team, would've been shown the door.

A solid year in 2008 for Danny Myer would be a huge improvement on 2007.
I think we all know what we mean!! ;)
The two areas that I'd like to see us make a priority for spending is in recruitment and medical.
We've had a 'bad run' with injuries of recent years so I hope that with a young side that we err on the side of caution.
They can get jabbed in the middle of a game when they're 25+ and our team has matured and up the ladder a bit more.
With the competition so tight , injuries can play a huge part in what kind of year you have

why doesn't this come as a surprise to me:o
Hope Danny does make his mark next year, he could be a very good player. I have always had time for him but was starting to become a doubter.
Hopefully (praying) the RFC are starting to move out of the stone age when it comes to the medical staff and their methods of treatment.

No, it's not fair to say because you weren't involved in any of it, you have no idea what happened so you aren't in a position to make judgement on it.
Hopefully he can play 15 or so games (22 would be great). I want to see him feel like part of the team and go out there and demand the footy...

I'd love him to come good but I can't see too many opportunities for him at AFL level. Even if he improves drastically on 2007 he's still only going to be barely making the grade and we've got other players looking like they want it a hell of alot more then him, injuries or no.

Have to disagree with you there DW.
You only have to look at the output from Judd in the second half of the 07 season and you can see how debilitating an injury can be and Judd is a freak with a mountain of tricks in his bag and he still couldn't cut it in the second half of the season.
From what Miller said it sounds like Meyer was told to play on with the injury and this would have killed his self confidence.
If the kid is any good and he can get 100% fit then I have no doubt that he can make the best 22 and have a real influence.
It will be interesting to see what happens.
Anyone who saw him play in the praccy match against melb at Princes Park this year would know that he could be a good player 100 - 150 games.
Hope he can live up to this.

As a huge Danny Meyer supporter I know this kid's potential.
I really hope his injury comes good, he can have a strong Pre Season, get some confidence up and show what I know he is capable of.
This kid "potentially" can be a consistant matchwinner. Simple as that.

You are right Infamy, I felt a little guilty posting it which is why I tried to ask how fair it was.
I have heard from several people that after the 1st knee reco Cogs said all along "it just didn't feel right", and they said that's how a knee reco feels.
He rips his knee apart from a little slip in the shower, therefore I can see some truth to the rumours - the operation wasn't done as good as it should have (which is no blight on the club, it happens). Where we went wrong is by allegedly not doing sufficient tests to determine if his operation was as successful as they wanted. They should have listened to him and if they did who knows, he may have played a majority of this season.

Agree 100%, and in that same game Schulz was BOG with Pettifer I believe, if both Meyer and Schulz can come good then we'll be so much better off!

rubbish
he needs a huge year just to catch up to the likes of edwards who have gone straight past him, a solid year might not be enough to save him
i like danny because he has talent and plenty of tricks but patience is running out and once your on terry's bad side its a tough road coming back

Exactly. This 2008 will be Danny's forth year. If he doesn't have a big season, playing 15+ matches, there is simply no room for him. Too many players have gone past him and as previous posters have said he will struggle to break into the team because he doesn't really have a position.
Surely with Raines, Bowden, Newman, McMohan plus the youngsters in Cass and Conners, we can't afford to put him on the HBF and up on the HFF we have Edwards, Tambling, Petts, Brown and probably Cotchin + Deledio and Hyde.
I hope he suceeds, but after showing nothing in 2007 after a decent 06', i expect a better then "solid" year from this underacheiver.
Oh, and FFS can we please delist Moore, why is he still on the list? He has played maybe 2 good games in 5 years and another 3 or 4 solid ones. He doesn't play tall and with McGuane, Thurstfield, Polak and Bowden ahead of him + a potential tall defender in this years draft, where does he fit into our team?

Mark coughlan complained? I thought he stuffed his knee in the shower. I wanna know how he did it though. Slipped? I doubt it. Tell us the truth please Mark.
And as for Danny? Sorry, but clubs are more professional these days and injuries are not handled the way they were back in the 80's. He looked simply disinterested most of the year and seemed to move ok for mine.

Yeah was there and liked what i saw but i get the feeling his attitude stinks and doesn't want it as bad as the other players in his bracket.

Why? Moore is only earning a small percentage above a 1st and 2nd year player and is strong insurance for our defence considering we have rid of Gas, Hall and P.Bowden in the one year.
Thursty, Mcguane, Moore etc become our inexperienced Defenders. We have always lacked defence and this is where he recieves his lifeline.
Talk to terry, kingy and co.... he is highly regarded with in the club and particularly with the coaching staff.
All young juniors eg Tambo, Lids, Raines recieve freebie AFL games consistantly. Moore has barely played 4 games in a row.
His first 2-3 years begun on the rookie list, recieved an elevation where he never had a position to play for... and copped injury for 2 years straight.
Same as Meyers case, Staff did not recognize the extent of his injuries which delayed a further 8 weeks last year...
This year was his first year with out an injury lasting more than two weeks.
Has barely had the opportunity as Schulz for example.
Mark coughlan complained? I thought he stuffed his knee in the shower. I wanna know how he did it though. Slipped? I doubt it. Tell us the truth please Mark.

Remember Coughlans OP injury a few years back? The club never found how to provide him with rehab.
Cogs privately went to US to recieve examines and rehab for his 'OP'.
Then he went through the issue with his knee... it never felt right, but the club pushed him.
Brown was pushed a little too much in return from his horrific leg snap.
The meyer injury issue has now come out.
Moore had injuries that were ignored
Spoke to Chaffey in the pre-season before he retired. He had issues with the club finding the injury issue with his quad.
I can see plenty of links here, could be more stories....
Why are we only hearing about this now ?
Why are we only hearing about this now ?
To rid of all the rumors that he is set to walk on us.
Just a cover up for the club and Danny.

Sorry to say it, but if this is the case and Moore is actually "highly regarded" by Terry, King and co., well it's time to switch coaching staff and send the aforementioned names packing.
Highly regarded for what I ask?
The guy has shown nothing in three or four seasons. Time to move him on!

Excuses from Hall? What a load of shit.
He played nearly half his career injured and will be paying for that for the rest of his life.
Why not pick a player who didn't front up for the toughest jobs week after week and give his all? You know, 98% of players who get drafted.
Brown was pushed a little too much in return from his horrific leg snap.
Let's not forget, Brown wanted to play a lot of times where the club was forced to overrule him.

I want to see Danny tear the ar$e out of a couple of VFL games (in a row) before he is even considered for a AFL game.
Needs to earn a game now, credit just about all used up.
But good luck to him, we will need a replacment for Brownie in a couple of years, and people say he has the skills. Just needs to develop a big ugly set of kahunas now.
Hope he comes good.

GM said Danny doesn't have an attitude problem, the 'poor attitude' was most likely directed at the club's poor management of him rather than poor as in 'lazy'.
make no mistake had we received a decent offer for danny (2nd rounder) he would of been gone, as it turns out he isnt worth shit atm so we might aswell hang on to him

Unless you have solid evidence that Coughlan told our medical staff that his knee wasn't right, you have no business posting this slanderous crap.
Restating rumour, and then effectively asserting that our club was negligent for "not listening to him" as though that rumour were fact, is verging on the defamatory and you should be very careful.

Fair enough Snout, I'll edit it out.
The whole Cogs situation didn't fill me with confidence, either did Nathan Brown, Simmo, Meyer etc... it's frustrating having players injured and whispers that it could have been prevented.
