One of the greatest bass guitar players in history, John Entwistle of The Who has died. As a bass player myself, I would consider him (along with Lemmy Kilmister and Warwick Gilbert of Radio Birdman) as my favourite bass player. I might just have to pull out Live at Leeds tonight and have a drink in his honour.

Says he died in a Las Vegas hotel room, in his sleep from an apparent heart attack.

Also says that they were going to play the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on the opening night of a three-month U.S. tour, starting this evening, but that show has been cancelled, and no decision's been made yet about the rest of the tour.l

Indeed one of the great ones. His influence is an example that you don't need to scream and shout-- like his bandmates Townshend or Moon-- to get attention in a band.

The Who have always been always one of my favourite bands, and may John Entwhistle rest in peace.

Cheers,
William

I was completely distressed to hear the news. I've been a guitar player for years, but in the past two years I've been learning bass as well. Entwhistle was my primary inspiration for that.

Listen to his playing in 'My Generation' wherein he puts forth the most splendid example of a bass solo ever recorded IMO. Also check out 'The Real Me.' Absolutely phenomenal. In 'The Real Me' his playing is actually the melodic instrument in the track rather than a rhythm piece holding down the bottom.

To say more, a bassist can know the notes, scales & arpeggios he is using, but still not be able to pull out the subtle inflection in his style. A positively brilliant player.

Geez, how many rockers have died this year? Sad loss of talent in most of these cases. Not to mention these guys are going to miss Richmond making the greatest come from behind Premiership win in history. :(

RIP

I was thinking the same thing when I saw this topic, Mooster. It's been a shocking year and it's still only half over.

RIP John

A very sad day for Rock music when it losses one of the original wild boys of rock and roll. Entwisle and Townsend gave us the traditional smashing of guitars at the end of a concert s their trademark and it will be missed.

The Who will continue their tour as a mark of respect butanother legend is gone at a young age.

Why is all the talent dying.

I'm talking about my Generation.

Here's a thought !!

The Who have lost their rhythm section and the Beatles have one. What about the four of them hooking up and doing an album ???

Pete, Paul, Roger & Ringo - "The Whoatles"

Slax, I gotta be pedantic here, JE never smashed any of his bases on stage. Pete Townshend smashed his guitars and Keith Moon trashed his drums.

I saw them in '67/68

Very sad news. Great bass player.

I read in todays paper that apparently there was an "adult entertainer" in his room the night he died. No doubt this will become some sordid affair now, a shame really....

No, that's just for politicians and...the rest of us.

Being a drug addled whore-monger never reflects negatively on a Rocker's job performance evaluation. One of the perks really.
