Myers aims for 2008 senior debut

Wednesday, 28 November 2007
Gun 2007 recruit, David Myers, has set his sights high and hopes to make his debut next season with Essendon.

Speaking exclusively to Bomber.tv during his first visit to Windy Hill today, Essendon's first pick in the 2007 NAB National Draft (pick 6 overall) said it was scary and different being at his new club.

"I am just very excited to be here. I've always dreamed of being in the AFL and now I've come across the country from Perth and can’t wait to get into it," Myers said.

Eighteen-year-old Myers and fellow 2007 recruits Tayte Pears, Cale Hooker and Darcy Daniher (who has already started training) were joined by their parents to watch training today and be introduced to their new team-mates and club staff.

While disappointed his favourite player James Hird is no longer at the club, Myers - who is known for his leadership potential - says he wants to join his new team-mates soon on the big stage.

"I played a bit of senior football back home so I've had a taste of what it's like to play with the big blokes," he said.

"Obviously there's a huge difference in the AFL with speed and size but, hopefully, if I have a big pre-season and improve, hopefully I will be looked at for selection for seniors and I would love to play a game."

The hard running 191cm backman - who is expected to develop into a potent midfielder - said he isn't feeling the pressure of being a high draft pick.

"It's an honour to go early in the draft but as soon as you get to the club it doesn’t really matter what number you got picked up and you are all back to a level playing field," Myers said.

Bendigo Bombers coach (and Essendon development coach for 1-4 year players), Adrian Hickmott, said Myers, Pears and Daniher were already physically well developed enough to play AFL. He said Hooker would need to bulk up but that all four are very exciting prospects for the club.

"These boys can all definately play and we are very excited to have them here. It will be exciting to work with them and help them develop into the best players they can be," Hickmott said.
