View Full Version : Why the Hawks won't see any success
They are not a truly great club, as they only appear to look like a decent outfit due to the pathetic blunders of other clubs.
Best KPP - Lance Franklin
A result of the total incompetence that relates to all things drafting, being Greg Miller, Wallet and the Richmond Football Club. If any other club had that pick you would have Tambling playing at Box Hill right now.:o
Best Midfielder - Luke Hodge
A result of the total incompetence that relates to all things trading, being the Fremantle Football Club. No other club in their right mind would give up pick #1 in that draft, especially for Croad out of all people.
Save me your whining about developing Sewell and Mitchell off the rookie list. Your team would look nowhere near as good without Franklin and Hodge. Great teams don't need to get their champions from the errors of others.
Hawthorn is truly the Stephen Bradbury of the AFL, only difference is you won't be getting any medals anytime soon. Your club is average and has been for nearly two decades now, you just luckily got hold of a couple of superstars that make you believe in vain that it can all turn around.

When your best midfielder is Jobe Watson, I'd rather rely on the errors of other clubs thank you very much....

I would also be lashing out at the world if i had Matthew Knights as our head coach. Its all very amusing. :) :thumbsu:
Mitchell wasn't off the rookie list.
My bad, I must have got that into my head somehow because I remember he played a lot of VFL at the start of his career.

Best KPP is Franklin.
He really is good, isn't he.
He wasn't even our first pick.
We chose Roughead before him.
Roughead will be just as influencial as Franklin. In the Adelaide final, this man kept us in the game in the first half whilst Buddy was settling in. Taking a little longer to develop. 2008 will be his year.
Best midfielder is Hodge.
It's true - not many clubs can boast having a player that's better than Judd. We can. But as good as Hodge is, Sam Mitchell out-polled him in the Brownlow and Sewell out-polled him the B&F. Lewis is also in the top 5 under-21 midfielders in the comp. That's a damn fine midfield. You obviously rate Hodge. We obviously have a very deep midfield.
Geelong is clearly the Stephen Bradbury of the AFL as they won in a year that had a top 8 consisting of Geelong, 4 teams on the rebuild (Port, Kangas, Hawks, Collingwood) and 3 that were too injured or past it (WCE, Sydney and Adelaide.)
How good does your team look without it's best midfielder(who is it by the way? Slim pickings in there) and best KPP?
Even with them in the side you finished with 10 wins, most of those solely attributable to the retired James Hird's inspiration and level head. 6 wins out of ten by less than 10 points.

Also had 2 losses by under 8 points. So 6 wins out of 8 in close games, that's just being good under pressure.
Essendon wouldn't look that great without 2 such players either, don't look that great with them at the moment to be honest. We expect our improvement to come from recent draftees anyway.
Besides we were talking about Hawthorn. Most clubs would struggle without their best tall and their best mid, but most clubs didn't get them by trading with the worst trading club in history or from a result of one of the worst drafting mistakes in recent memory.

You forgot Lewis and Birchall with picks from North Melbourne trades.

That was more bad luck on North's side. A blind monkey would know that trading pick #1 in the 2001 draft and drafting Tambling over Franklin were mistakes at the time.

Try telling that to Greg Miller & Terry ("yes, that is a natural tan") Wallet.
Hindsight is 20/20, hey? ;)
As for the Freo kokups, we ALL know about their pathetic trading history - who did you lose to get McPhee from them?

We gave them a 4th round pick for a player they probably had no room for anyway. That's what trading is about generally, allocating players and picks to where they are most needed. Considering he was picked at #39 two years before, getting McPhee is not quite the same as pick #1 in a superdraft.

How did you get Lloyd again :)
You've just been burnt. Glad I could help :thumbsu:

It certainly wasn't Fremantle giving away their #1 pick. They could not have possibly picked up Lloyd. We got a compensatory pick for trading away players. Nothing compared to giving up the first pick (and two others) for Croad and McPharlin.

Thank you for your kind endorsement of our recruiting team and Hodgey & Franklin.
The evidence does seems pretty clear cut that our recruiters can make other teams look foolish with their astute trading and recruiting.
We don't deal with Essendon much though as their recruiting team looks pretty foolish at times without any outside assistance.

So your message is that we are NOT supposed to do the best possible trades?
Surely Freo, Richmond and North are the ones to be ridiculed here. We couldn't make the trades without their consent, so they're entirely to blame. We've developed those draft picks properly. That's commendable if anything.
In summary - this thread is a backhanded insult.

bahh wrong answer, you got one of the best underaged young player in the land for a dud, Essendon ripped of Fremantle, atleast they got a good player from Hawthorn. If it wasn't for your Bradbury, NO Lyloyd = No Essendon.

Of course it's an insult to those clubs. I'm saying that Hawthorn would look nowhere near as strong, but for their utter incompetence.
Therefore, you can only rely on incompetence of others for so long, it won't take you to a flag.
HOW ****ING GOOD IS RICHARD COLE!He sucks. Absolute rubbish. We traded a 2nd round pick, it was worth a shot I guess. How good is the player that was drafted with that pick?

We've out-negotiated countless clubs.
Our recruiting builds the list - the coaching staff develops it into a flag. We've got a great list, every spot in the 22 needs to be fought for. We've got the coach of the year and we've just pumped some finals experience into our young, talented group.
So really, I'm not too worried. We don't rely on incompetence, we take advantage of it when it presents itself. Essendon actually EMPLOYS incompetence when it presents itself (and quite a good powerpoint presentation, so I've heard).

I don't know what you heard, but I heard it was the GREATEST powerpoint of all time. There were cool noises and awesome transitions between every slide. The clip art, well, let me just say, was breathtaking. Even pasted in tables he made in Excel. Hardwick has been at the computer ever since trying to emulate such a masterful use of Powerpoint.
