Went down for a photo with the holly grail and was surprised to see the boys training.
Was just a basic session with a lot of fitness.
Tommahawk was doing some light drills. Seems to have buffed up a lot.
Shannon spent time with tommahawk and then went and trained with the new boys.
Harry Taylor looked really comfy out and about. Was surprised to see him at the club already. Not as big as i thought he would be in the flesh.
Scott Simpsons was also out there and was doing some handballing drills with Harry and Byrnesy. Looks very lean.
JC and Jimmy were doing some running and having shots on goal.
Otto and Stoksey were doing a bit of boxing (Otto is looking very lean and mean already)
Chappy looks solid as and raring to go.
Overall was very impressed by the boys and they look set to give the title a shake again.
Any Q's just ask!

Isnt it meant to be doing a tour of the state? Or at least other areas besides Geelong. Anyone please confirm if this is so.

Didn't train, however is still limited to running laps as his wrist recovers.

Nah, but he was seen yesterday with the boot on still.

Hawkins looks trimmer - time to turn what remains to muscle. More importantly though, hope his fitness levels are (significantly) better.
Simpson (of the Dawson kind) measures up pretty well to Otto in their respective pic - kid has some meat on the bones already.
Prissa looking pretty ripped as well, looks like he's preparing to give himself the best chance possible at cracking the team.

Not to nitpick or anything but you can't turn fat into muscle. Hawkins looks a little underdeveloped in the shoulders & arms in comparison to his quads.

It will be another 1 or 2 preseasons at least before he is fully built but I'd assume that over this year he will burn off a lot of his remaining fat. At least he won't be too top heavy this year.

That is nitpicking. If your going to do that you may aswell go back to where people refer to baby fat. Is baby fat possible on an 18-19 yo or is it just fat? And when referring to Hawkins does he have much fat at all or is it just undefined muscle?
You can be muscular with out having chiseled arms and shoulders.

yes you can, but it is not "undefined muscle". It's muscle under a layer of subcutaneous fat. And I said "in comparison to his quads". He looks very heavy through the hips. Don't talk tech unless you know tech. Thanks.

What about Gaz and Josh? Are their arms and shoulders developed enough in comparison to their quads?
The Tomahawk's such a big unit, he'd need legs like tree trunks to propel him anywhere. :p

Hunt yes, GAJ... well he's got those weird Ablett body shape genes so the normal standards don't really apply. I'm not saying Hawkins isn't going to be a monster, because he quite clearly will be, but Glen Jakovich he is not. Yet.

Someone probably stole it and they're now trying to cover it up. ;)
Actually, come to think about it, when Jess and I quickly ducked into Club Cats to use the toilet, the glass case that the NAB Cup and 1963(???) cup are held in didn't have the big cup in it!

Did anyone get to go down today? If so please post what you got to see here.
I was only able to see a few minutes worth, this is what I saw:
- one on one drills, players matched against each other were Scarlett v Hawkins, Blake v West, also saw Milburn and Lonergan but couldn't make out their opponents.
- down at the city end David Wheadon was helping a couple of young guys with their kicking/goal-kicking. I think (but I'm not sure) that one was Brody Moles (shaved head), while the other was pretty tall and had kinda boofy/frizzy hair. Maybe Kangars? Anyway the taller guy had a crappy and awkward kicking action (even a hack like me has a better one) and will need a fair bit of work.
- Joel Corey, even though he was pretty far away, was looking fairly buffed muscle-wise, it looked as though he'd been doing alot of weights.
- Chappy and Otto (and maybe Egan) were watching from the interchange gates and just doing things (eg. bike riding) along the boundary line.
Anyway that's all I can remember, like I said if anyone got to see more please post it here.
Cheers.

That would be Kangas. Not a footballer more of an athlete. Well a freak athlete. Will need the two years just to work on his skills.

I watched about an hour from 10am - 11am. Chappy was restricted to running laps and some light kicking with a few of the trainers.
Most of the guys were pretty laid back. This is until they started match simulation drills and then it suddenly got really intense. Standouts were Steve Johnson and Stokesy. Some of their disposals were freakish.
Corey Enright looked like he's added 5kg in bulk and Blakey has definately become a man. Got the veins bulging down his cannons. Get on Enright for the Brownlow in 2008. He's huge. Mackie and Lonergun are the same size which is a little disappointing.
Tommahawk looked better but still not tip top. His hands were awesome during marking skills.
Djerrkerra (forgive the spelling) was being called "Jitty".
Moondogs has shaved his head.
Frank and Brian came out for a look and seemed surprised with the crowd turnout. I was too actually. I think there was around 200 people and I was expecting about 30.
Corey and Linga stood out as being the two guys who were taking the training ultra seriously while most of the other players were quite jovial.
My biggest highlight was hearing a 3 year old girl sitting near me yelling out to her favourite players "Lingy" and "Chappy".
This training session was much more enjoyable than the session before the grandfinal. I definately recommend it to those who have never been before. I'd go again next week but I'm back at work which sucks.

Went to training 9/1 and was impressed with the physical nature of training this early in the year. The 1 on 1 contest between Scarlet and Hawkins
showed Hawkins may be in for a fair few games this year. Also the lack of injured, or players recovering from surgery was also very pleasing. Have taken some picks to share

Bartel looked ok but didn't really standout as a big improver. He is slightly more toned in his arms I'd say.
Mackie is the same size as last year. I was impressed with his physicality in contests.
I'd have to say Selwood looked a bit out of touch in the 60 minutes of training that I saw. He didn't get much of the ball during match simulation and when he did his disposals were below par on a few occasions. Don't read too much into my observations as I only had a brief glimpse of him.

He is a definite chance to break into the seniors this year if he doesn't get injured (like the last few times). I assume like other players stepping up from VFL that he will be rotated off the bench, but thats not to say that he wont make a big impact. He has been unlucky in the past with injuries at the worst times but this is it, this is his year! Go Priz!

Ok, here we go.
Got there a bit after 9 and the boys were out on the track.
One group of blokes (consisting mainly of the younger blokes) were doing tackling drills.
Varcoe and Djidi looked ferocious in their tackles. The prospect of both of them putting forward line pressure on is tantalizing.
Gamble also looked pretty strong, seems to have finished with his injury troubles from last year.
The other group consisted of the senior players. They were working on how to move the ball quickly from the back 50, to the top of the forward 50.
The boys are loooking really pro at it. Scarlo really set up a lot of plays with bartel looking for the quick hands from the marker.
They then went off and did some tackling as well to finish off the session.
meanwhile on the Hickey stand side of the ground Otto, Westy, Blake and Hawkins (I think) were working on their contested marks/punches/hitouts.
They weren't really out for long.
Didn't spot any of the draftees, guess they got to have some time off.

However the last time i was at training, he was lean and had a heap of muscle. Was working on his running, and looks really fit :thumbsu:

How was Hawkins at training Rizzo?
I'll add a few comments as well.
Hawkins looked to me like he's lost about 5-6 kgs. Much leaner and very fit. The last thing I saw was most of the big guys (Ottens, West, Hawkins, Mooney) plus some of the new recruits doing the same tackling drill the smaller guys were doing earlier. A lot of one on one grappling too. As you would expect, they all looked in very good shape.
I saw Egan earlier too, when the senior guys were moving it from end to end, so he was out there. The only guys I couldn't spot were Chappy and Tenace. Pretty much everyone else was out there at some point or another.

Cheers Rizzo and Patridge. This is the type of news I want in the papers, not the negative crap all the time.

Yep he was out there. He looked in good shape, not sure if he's gotten any bigger, but he isn't skinny, put it that way. Was working pretty hard with Scarlett at one point and held his own pretty well.

Partridge, how was Egan's mobility? And did he look unfit and slow considering his injury and missing a lot of training?

Chappy was out but for not very long. He was hard to spot cause he was wearing a hat.

Thanks Rizzo and Partridge.
I agree, thanks for the updates. I'd love to be able to drop in to training to see for myself but I guess I shall have to continue to rely on these great updates. This is my favourite thread, so full of optimism once more.:thumbsu:

Sorry about all the questions, but apart from those you mentioned in your original post did anyone else stand out or impress?
Thought I'd drop in on Tuesday to training just to check up on the guys to make sure they were actually training and not just really driving fast. I have to say the boys really need to work on their basketball shooting skills. They were trying to get the footy's in the wheelie bin and were all pretty terrible. hahaha Oh but don't get me wrong they did train too, so thats good.

Looked fine from where we were. I saw him mainly when they were running the ball between the 50m lines. Was running, kicking, marking, the works. Showed no discomfort from our vantage point.

Proof that the guys are training (or what looks like they are).

Definately. And he's not unfit and chunky like he was last season.

will Brent Prismall make it into your midfield this year?

No, he won't. Because Bartel, Corey, Ablett, Ling, Selwood, Kelly are all ahead of him, and then throw in part time midfielders Paul Chapman, Corey Enright and Andrew Mackie. Added to that, Matty Stokes has shown desire to push more up the ground and play a midfield role, I dare say Prismall will have to rely on injuries before cementing his spot in the seniors.
If he did make the best 22 it would be on the interchange at best, definitly not ready for a starting role in Geelong's roles royce despite how many other supporters will tell you otherwise.

but there are always suspensions and injuries
and he is better than byrnes who got way too much game time for his ability
the interesting one is tenace as its this year or out, but geelong need him to show something because if they are to trade him would want a decent selection in return for the investment
chapman will also be eased this year due to op, and gablett will need to be cautious not to suffer the same thing

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the question was "will Brent Prismall make it into (our) midfield this year?". I don't think anyone (his "fans" over here included) are deluded enough (yet) to think he'll be starting in the centre square come Round 1, but I certainly (if there is to be such a certain answer to this question) wouldn't rule him out of being a part of our midfield this year.
All this definitive talk about Prismall not having a role to play because of the logjam ahead of him is rubbish. The factoring in of injuries and form drop of other players has obviously not been calculated into the equation, yet is a very real variable in this whole issue. What's not to say someone will have a Kelly-like year (circa 2006) and find themselves in the VFL for a good portion, opening up a spot in this so-called set 22 of ours?
I don't think you could suggest that Pris will play 20+ games for us this season with any more certainty than you could arguing that he won't (nothing's certain), but if I were to bank any money, it'd be on Pris playing a much bigger role this season than any other to date.
