View Full Version : Settle a bet - which is the worst decision of the off-season?

Just wondering, as each of these decisions seem to be widely criticised, which one is the worst?
1. The Knights decision. Best coach in the land? Or Microsoft Powerpoint extraordinaire?
2. Stewy Dew at pick 45. Is he past it, or will he be a real asset?
3. Jordan McMahon as an early second round pick (I forget the exact numbe) Clearly a bad decision, but is it the worst?
4. Freo picking up the Essendon rejects Bradley and Johnson. If they're not good enough for Essendon's list - surely they're not good enough for anyone's list.

2 cracks at essendon in the one post. About the norm for you LP. Would think options 2, 3, and 4 would be thw worst ones. Knights will be a great success if early signs are anything to go by:thumbsu:

Definately Richmond not giving Wallet and Miller the arse. Those two uesless pricks will drive the Spitters back into the VFL.

Interesting post, you did however forget -
No.5 A Geepong supporter getting a tattoo stating 'Gay Premiers 07'
excluding No.5 I would definitely say No.4 Freo - Bradley he who walks sideways and Johnson he who's knuckles drag on the ground :)

as much as I want to go for the Dew, i can't go past Jordan for a second round when they could have got him for free.
my order
1. Jordan McMahon
2. Essendon Reser..... sorry Fremantle
3. Stuart "The Bucket" Dew
4. Microsoft Man

So everything except the Knights decision is the worst?
And only one of those was a crack at Essendon.
Option 4 was a crack at Freo, but take it personally if you want.

Would think that was a crack at the Essendon list? 'Surely they're not good enough for anyone's list'. Those were your words. Perhaps I am deluded then. Still believe that you weren't trying to have a subtle crack at Essendon? Surely not.

I'll go the Albino ... No player or player/s can do as much damage as a coach.
Shocking decision, clearly they want draft picks for a few years, then will hire Voss or someone.

Things went a bit pear-shaped when Voss pulled out of the race, that's for sure.

The Albino all the way.
Johnson will probably be a useful player for us, Kepler I'm not so sure of but hes only 22, we need a backup backup ruckman, and he will play better for us (BTW wasn't kepler named best player in the VFL??)
Solomon was a very handy player for us last year and yes we had a shocker, but the intensity that solomon has around stopages and the effort he puts in is well worth it. He finished in the top 6 tacklers in the league so fulfills his role well.

Albino, surely.
The fish rots at the head and the Dons will be dropping this clown like a hot potato as soon as someone better comes along. That "someone better" could be anyone.....

I know it wasnt off-season but awarding goal of the year to Lloyd remains the biggest mystery and thus worst decision in the history of Australian Rules football and/or world sport.
Just like Solomon wasn't good enough for the Bombers list and was one of our best players last year. ;)
Ummm... well... yes, that's kind of the point. How did that side go with Solomon leading them to glory?

Good to see you're making my nomination for the impotent flog award even better.
On the subject of the poll tho, it's got to be Essendon's choice of coach. Seriously, i'm thinking of chucking at least a pineapple on them for the spoon this year. He will destroy what little hope they have this year.
What could be more amusing than watching Mark Harvey, one of the Dons favorite sons, coaching Freo to a finals spot (and for all intents and purposes SHOULD be coaching the Bombers), while Essendon languish in the bottom 2 with a Richmond ring in?

Farmer, Tarrant, Carr, Solomon and Johnson all in the same team.

Why isnt there an All of the above option?
Because they can't all be the worst decision.
Would have been controversial to put "North's decision not to accept the only deal that would save their club", but like I've said before - I'm steering clear of that issue.
Simply must be Casper.
I mean let's not beat around the bush - even before Sheedy felt the axe there was a fine crop of coaching talent available to pick from...Knights was never one of them.
The departing coach has a solid year with a mediocre list yet Essendon sack him, which at the time was considered by many the worst decision of the year*...which I could go on & on about, but will maintain my focus on Knights.
*Don't ask for proof, just take my word for it ;)
At seasons end, following this debacle, the board sit and and look through potential candidates using rankings from 1-10 to rate key performance areas...turns out Knights scores miserably in all areas except contrast, in which he received a 10 - a clear benefit of the recessive ginger gene he carries which has had a significant impact on his skin pigmentation.
The fact that Knights was even given a grain of consideration showed how broadly Essendon were willing to extend their search - they clearly wanted to consider everyone - no matter what their blemishes may be.
After pooling the results, it turns out 'Cat' Thompson scores the highest - the 2007 premiership being the clincher.
So what happens then you ask?...well let me tell you.
Essendon proceed to actively pursue the coach of a premiership starved side whose personally built playing list just achieved something amazing. The thing Essendon overlooks however is the fact that someone who has just done what Thompson has (after so long) is HIGHLY BLOODY UNLIKELY to want to go to a club with a crop of players who wouldn't look out of place in a Richmond guernsey.
With their heads still firmly submerged in the sand for numerous weeks, they wait - driven by false hope thinking that Thompson will come back to his old club.
Time continues to pass, and other quality options are snapped up. The shortlist is pruned further and still the Essendon board wait for Thompson's call.
With the eggs all in one basket, things start to get desperate, as Thompson appears more and more likely to stay at Geelong (as if anyone with half a clue thought he was ever going to leave for a start).
Finally Thompson commits, and Essendon reach crisis point - luckily however they still have some good candidates available to pick from - a blessing at this stage.
After re-evaluating the candidates left, Essendon then proceed to announce the unthinkable. They see the name M. Knights scribbled on the bottom of the list still and say "let's role the dice" and appoint the softest person we know who was schooled by the only football club to have ever embraced failure as being an acceptable way of life. They figure "Sheeds came from there, so Matty might turn out similar" and so they go ahead and appoint the most uninspiring individual on this earth.
Even to this point today, ALL Essendon supporters are seething and burning up inside at this horrendous decision - many swear they will not be renewing their memberships.
The short and long term consequences of this appointment to a once proud club are paramount and simply cannot be underestimated.
And as Essendon spiral into oblivion over the next few years, it will be solely due to one man, one very white man, who will be remembered in history as one of the most influential people in Australian sporting history - for all the wrong reasons.
There's little doubt that this decision is the worst of the off season by some stretch, in fact many will feel it could well be the worst of all time.

You guys saved your club by saying no to the merger, not yes.

How about you two lovebirds exchange phone numbers so you can talk hours on end without interruption:p.
You wait and see mate. Knights will be a success. Getting Kepler Bradley is the single worst decision in AFL/VFL History. Has the same intelligence as a peanut in regards to decision making. Freo will see this soon enough.

You could well be right.
Then watching Fremantle draft him as well was probably not much better ;).

As much as we pic on Hawthorn for picking up Dew, and as useless as we expect him to be, his experience will be invaluable for their players after the crap they served up in that Semi Final.
But pick 45? If he helps there club, thats a great pick up, if he is garbage then no loss.
So my nomination is for Freo taking the 2 ex bomber boys. It reeks of them just taking them because they knew each other at Essendon, and not because they will help the club move forward.

poll is a bit redundant. how can appointing knights be the worst decision if two players not good enough for his team were picked up by fremantle? The Chad's official pick for the wooden spoon 2008.

Then your official pick is bogus, not a snowflakes chance in hell we'll pick up the spoon, leave that to Essendon or Richmond for the honours.
I seriously believe drafting Kepler and Johnson will see good results, but until the season starts we cant get results.....so enjoy picking on us while you can chumps

I was being a smart arse.
I haven't followed the issue closely enough to argue the point - basically I don't want north to leave but all things suggest it's inevitable.
Yes, refusing to merge saved our club, but it also included signing up 20,000 extra members in the "no merger" campaign. Our membership has stayed around 30,000 since then. Unless that happens for the roos the future looks pimply.
