Interesting article written on Page 8-9 of 'Pre-Game' in the West Australian today about the outgoing chairman of the WCE, Mike Smith. It was revealed

Mick Malthouse told the club midway through 1999 that he wanted to return to Melbourne for "a range of reasons"
Ken Judge was the ONLY person the club spoke to as the club's replacement coach. If the WCE board had the time again, they would have "gone through a more rigorous process... including (interviewing) people who weren't senior coaches.
Neil Craig had a better first round interview than John Worsfold and the position was virtually his, until Craig pulled out of the race.

Smith's replacement is Dalton Gooding, a former Claremont player. I don't know anything about this man, although he was in favour of giving the senior coaching position to Neil Craig.

Dalton Gooding is a partner in the accounting firm Gooding Pervan in Perth CBD. Has been around for a while - I think he was at Ernst & Young - certainly one of the big accounting firms. His nickname at one stage was "Sir Lunchalot". I'd think he'd make quite a good Chairman.

Mick had to go home for family reasons. That's fair enough - he gave us a decade of his life and I, for one, am grateful.

The Board has clearly learned from its abominable lack of process in the Judge selection, so that the Woosha selection was done properly. I take all of that as a good thing - if Woosha had been ahead from Day 1 of the interview process, I would be suspicious that it was a "fix" to get him the job. The guy who is best in the first interview isn't necessariliy the best for the job - he may just have the best line of bull****!

I used to watch him play for Claremont in the late 70's (retired circa 1980). He had lamb chops, buddy holly glasses, and wore number 44. He was the only guy still using the drop kick on a regular basis at the time.
