Clark Keating produced a whole-hearted effort and Mick Martin continued to build his game, but Damian Cupido suffered another shoulder injury in tonight’s big Lions Reserves win over Mt Gravatt. Cupido was one of the best players on the ground across half-back, using his long, pinpoint disposal to devastating effect.
But he sat shattered in the changerooms after the game having injured his shoulder in an innocuous fall just three minutes from the end. Club medicos were still assessing the damage, although they are hoping it will be less severe than last shoulder problem that sidelined Cupido for five weeks. Keating was in a much happier frame of mind, having rucked for most of the day against dogged Vultures big man Ben Hudson. While he dropped some marks, Keating still took plenty of others and he leapt hard and high at the ball at ruck contests after quarter-time. His clever tap work created several goals from boundary throw-ins and ball-ups. His performance kept the pressure right on senior ruckmen Beau McDonald and Jamie Charman to perform. Martin was very good in his return from calf problems last week and even better tonight. He copped a solid knock in the opening five minutes and was taken from the ground to have a head wound taped, but his last three quarters were outstanding. Playing on one wing, Martin ran hard into attack and defence, and was in the thick of the action at ground level. The Lions Reserves strong run proved too much for the Vultures, who were missing injured quality small men Steve Kenna and Robert Scott, and the suspended Mark Edwards. Cupido looked in terrific form and he kicked the goal of the night, grabbing the ball in a back pocket, taking a bounce, and then hitting Darren Bradshaw on a long lead outside half-forward. Cupido followed up the kick to get the ball back and goalled on the run from inside 50. It was brilliant stuff, much like one of his kick-ins from a behind that landed in a teammate’s arms just metres in front of the centre circle. A goal resulted in a lightning transference of play. Nick Raines’ blistering speed also proved a handful for the Vultures early, while Craig Bolton was his usual prolific self getting the hard ball. Bradshaw booted four first quarter goals and finished the night with 7-4 to take his season’s tally to 54 from the eight games he has played. The Lions led 13-8 to 3-3 at halftime and finished 19-21-135 to 7-9-51 victors. When the Vultures did go forward, they could not pass Cupido, Dylan McLaren at centre-half-back, and Luke Weller at full-back. McLaren and Weller were rock solid throughout, with ruckman McLaren showing his adaptability in the key position in recent weeks. Dashing Nathan Clarke enjoyed his best game yet after missing a large chunk of the early season games, rushing the ball forward from defence. Luke Hammond also did all that could be asked of him whether at half-back or half-forward. And Richard Hadley showed terrific touch in heavy traffic as well as a strong desire to chase down and tackle opponents in a pointer to having thrown off the osteitis pubis that sidelined him for three weeks. The Lions suffered another casualty when lively wingman Jason Gram was carried off in the second quarter with a rolled ankle and he was on crutches after the game, and he too will have to wait to find out just how severe the damage is.

Good to see that Martin had another good game. After two games back, he must be considered for senior selection surely.
