ESSENDON ventured into enemy territory yesterday for the Ron Clarke Classic athletics meeting at Geelong. Speedsters Heath Hocking, Bachar Houli and Brent Stanton led the charge in the 3km teams' event, but it was the boys from the Ocean Grove Football Club who took home the Jack Clarke Trophy for the fastest team. Essendon finished a close second with Houli first across the line for the Dons, followed by Stanton and Hocking. Henry Slattery and Angus Monfries also competed.
Hocking, who won the club's pre-season time-trial, said he was disappointed Essendon was unable to defend the trophy it won last year. "I reckon Brent Stanton got a bit of a lift from getting (James) Hird's No. 5 jumper the other day," Hocking said. "We all ran pretty solidly and we all finished within 20 seconds of one another which is good." The star of the meeting was American sprinter John Woods, who could soon be competing for Australia.
Woods, who moved to Canberra in July and has a 100m personal best of 10.16sec, won the 100m in 10.52 ahead of Nigerian Commonwealth Games representative Anthony Alozie and then claimed the 200m in 21.72sec. Athletics Australia chief executive Danny Corcoran said Woods, 25, had told him he wanted to become an Australian citizen. "If he then gets a passport and he's not blocked (by US Track and Field), he could be eligible next year," Corcoran said. Woods, a stockbroker, said: "I'm not currently a permanent resident but my intentions are to make a new home here. It would be easier (to run for Australia rather than the US) but it's not necessarily about finding a shortcut to the Olympics or anything like that."

Offered a slab and a day off were they.
Good to see Hocking talking the talk so soon after elevation
Great to see Houli backing up last years effort of leading the team home as well.
Impressed with Houli...he is a gun.
Hmmmm not sure how to react to the overall result though.
Great..:thumbsu: we came second.
Or
OMG  We lost to Ocean Grove FC.
Does anyone know who ran for Ocean Grove? (Anyone famous?)

It's a good thing the likes of Todd Goldstein and Tyson Goldsack kept their distance.

Given that Ocean Grove is down by the water, they probably just pulled their lifesavers/triathletes in.
It's either that, there's something in the water or it's handicapped in some way or another.

After a lot of negative press regarding Ocean Grove it's good to see some positive news as the boys showed there class against quality opposition. Ocean Grove have only been back at training for two weeks so credit where credits due I reckon. Go Grubbers!!

Well done Grovers. Just because they are bush league, does not mean they are not great athletes. :thumbsu:

What's funny is that you took the time to go to the Essendon board, open the thread and then post in it.
Nah what's funny is that your "professional" AFL team got beaten by a amatuer team that has been training for 2 wks..... NOW THAT'S FUNNY!! :thumbsu:

You've got no idea how the system worked do you?

the grubbers were not handicapped and did not pull in local lifesavers/triathletes. the grubbers ran a bunch of kids and senior players who work hard on the track and it paid dividends for then.

We're a faster team then you guys, no doubts about that, try beating Houli, Dempsey, Jetta, Davey, Lovett and the likes....Who are you's gonna put against us, oh I see, Leon Leon and Pendles. And do you know what's funny !?!, you read the Essendon Board, so you must really admire this part of the forum like most opposition club's supporters do.....:p

Ocean Grove Football Club? Are they some elite footy club? Know we are early into our pre season but would have been much more content with a 1st place.

I didn't say they were an elite football club, all I said was that they are far from ameteur runners, so I wouldn't be to concerned by coming second to them. (I would have preferred first placing as well, but not everything goes to plan....)

Everyone needs to remember that professional football players are all very good athletes yes but not professional runners. An amateur player or players can be a very good runner - my son is one of them. The three k times set are very good for players who also need speed, muscle strength, agility, etc. A good under 15 3k runner should be able to run 9min 30 secs but they will be slight, have reasonable speed 13 sec for 100 metres. The Under 18 3 k national record is 7:59. My son(19) runs 3km in around 8min has a speed over 100 on 12 secs BUT weights 69kg. His main sport is Aths but played afl for fun! It would be interesting to know how many of the Ocean groves players are like him

Thanks for pointing that out TS.
That puts it into perspective now.
Stanton said the winner ran 9.23 and was into athletics in the off season.

Well that complicates it even further as in a 3k race the secret is to get the pacing right for you. If the normal runners tried to go with a trained athlete they would hang for a lap or two but then really find the pace too tough, have an earlier lactic build up and normally run a slower time. I was doing some work with some school students trying to get them a feel for a 10 minute 3 k. It requires 80 sec for 400 metres for 7 and a half laps. It sounds quite easy but try it and you find out how difficult it is. In a race inexperienced runners lose this feeling for the pace very easily with quite disasterous results. The Essendon players did well not to do this!
