Football and cricket stars to do battle

Tuesday, 4 December 2007
Windy Hill has been the scene of some of this country’s greatest cricket highlights in recent years and it is set to add to that history with the return of the 3 mobile Six-a-Side Cricket Challenge on Friday, December 21st.

Who could forget Matthew Lloyd’s brilliant outfield catch to dismiss Damien Martyn in 2004 or James Hird putting Shane Warne into the grandstand in 2005? Once again, Australia and Essendon are set to do battle.

Matthew Lloyd has been named captain and will lead the charge against an Australian team that includes Brett Lee. The 90 minute showdown will commence at Windy Hill at 2pm.

The Essendon team will be finalised over the coming weeks and the battle is on in earnest to secure a place in the side. The players are leaving nothing to chance and today hit the nets at Windy Hill to practice ahead of an intense - and possibly bitter - selection process.

Lloyd – a once dangerous right-hand batsman and slow-to-very slow bowler - says there will be a major sporting rivalry on show when the star-studded teams collide.

“The boys are all very keen to be selected for the 3 Mobile Six-a-Side Cricket Challenge and we are going to have to make some difficult decisions at the selection table. We will have a close look at them in the nets over the coming weeks," Lloyd said.

“I think we have some players capable of doing some damage. Mark McVeigh landed a leg spinner the other day and that might be enough to get him in and David Hille at least looks like he can bowl fast.”

“Andrew Welsh thinks he looks like Michael Clarke but he certainly can’t bat like him that is for sure. It’s a shame because he wants to play but I can’t see it happening.”

On the eve of Christmas, it will be a great afternoon of fun and will give fans the chance to get up close and personal with some of the biggest names in Australian sport in the lead up to the Boxing Day Test against India.

Entry is a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to the Bill Hutchison Foundation – a harm prevention charity which primarily supports or conducts programs that aim to reduce the incidence of depression, obesity and substance abuse in the adolescent community.

The match at Windy Hill is also a great way of reminding cricket fans that they can catch all the latest cricket news and live streaming of the matches via 3 mobile, for both the 3 mobile Test Series and the One Day Internationals this summer.

A story on the first (and possibly only) training session will be put on Bombert.tv soon.

Lloyd and WElsh on sen 5.45
Have they been on yet? Have anything notable to say?
If they've already been on it must've been an incredibly short interview as I tuned in at around 5:50pm!

It's always rigged. As if the Aussies would lose. I remember Lloydy took a screamer (Which was obviously not rigged) a couple of years ago and I think we won by 1 run. It's stupid how we get 1 hand one bounce and stuff like that. So go Gilly! :D

Lucky. We'd be in trouble judging by how the Aussies are going at the moment.

This is a bummer.

Anything else coming up where the public can meet the players?

Obviously my focus has been on NM in the past few weeks and we've had a few functions already.

Time to balance the ledger with the two bomber kids in our house and get them some time with the red and black players as well.

I'd worked out time off for this one and the kids had finished school a day earlier than this cricket match. :(

Does anyone know if any other functions are on the cards over the Christmas/New Years break?

Thanks
JD

They should at the very least give a proper explanation as to why it's not going ahead.
Also, couldn't they just re-schedule it if the 21st isn't a good date for either team?

JD-Roo - Not that I know of. They're doing a community camp but it's up on the Gold Coast (no I'm not saying that to stir you, it's the truth!) so that's not exactly easily accessible...Sorry to not be of much help. I'm sure if you keep an eye on this forum/our official site you'll see if something is coming up.

Thanks Fraz. Nah - didn't think you were stirring, knew all that bit anyway.

Have been checking your official/unofficial site....... along with your unofficial/official site.......

I thought I'd find out from the people that'd REALLY know what's going on - here on BF!!

Side point - how much $$$ does that separate website spin for you guys?

I think you'll find it's a political decision between CA and 3.

On SEN they reckon the VCA has disallowed the game as it will detract from crowd numbers for the Vic vs India game scheduled for the same day.

If that's true then it's a pathetic excuse IMO. As I mentioned before, why don't they just change the date then rather than cancel it?
It's a fun day for the kids (and adults too!) and it's for charity. Why don't we do something similar then such as play a charity match against another AFL team?
