well it is the off season and I remember a little thread that started some good discussion last year about where is good to eat out in Adelaide.
So I thought I might start off where a group of us are having our christmas dinner and I wondered where everyone else recommends as a good place to eat.
For me:
Enotecca Cucina on Carrington st in the city. The deserts are to die for! I am so looking forward to eating there next week, I think I will just have and entree and then desert.... Last time I had to leave have my main just so that I could fit the lavender panacotta in. Yum.
Refurbished Hilton Hotel - the restaurant there has great food, the service from a couple of the younger waitresses was a little slack but the others were good.
Vietnam Village, Thebarton - best vietnamese in the state.
Will have to check them out myself!
For Vietnamese I LOVE Vietnam. 73 Addison Rd in Pennington. Out in the bronx but damn its good. The make your own Cold Rolls, the BBQ Quail and the hot pots are to die for. Will definately have to check out Viet Village.
My favourite place at the moment, is Cianti Classico on Hutt St. Its an old favourite. I love my Italian and they do it superbly. They have a fantastic wine list, their staff are close to the most knowledgable ive come across and are friendly and they do wonderful food. Their pasta is excellent.
For more special evenings I like Auge. Been there a couple of times and although it hits the pocket a bit, its definately worth it.
If anyones into wine and going to wineries then D'arenberg is a well known favourite...but also check out Skillagalee in the Clare Valley. A lovely family owned winery where the wife is also head chef. Very nice meals. Have a sip of their Riesling whilst sitting outside over looking the contoured vineyard. Great stuff!

You need to book for the Vietnam Village Macca - there is no way you can rock up and expect to get in, especially on a Saturday night.
It's also great for a pre-show dinner if you are going to the Ent centre before hand.
I'm just annoyed that I live too far away from it to take advantage of their takeaway.

Nothing better than a good seafood and the best seafood restaurant in Sammys (http://www.sammys.net.au/menu.php) down at the Marina. :thumbsu:
Don't mind "The Blanc" on Hutt St either. Great seefood grill there :thumbsu:
EDIT: We are having our Christmas dinner at Milano. Haven't been there before!

Cant go past the good old KFC ;)
On a serious note, Louisiana Tavern at Elizabeth is very nice. Meals are of a good size, reasonably priced, in a very up market establishment (for Elizabeth). And unlike Aqcua just across from it, they do not charge an extra $2.50 for a spoon of gravy. The waitresses always tell me most people cant finsh their 17.90 mega schnitzel....ive yet failed to finish one. :p

we have been frequenting caffe primo at mawson lakes lately, it's by far the best primo i've been to, never too busy, pretty cheap, nice food, never leave hungry, all good :thumbsu:
for anyone that likes greek food, i suggest you get down to estia restaurant down henley way.. has the most amazingly nice meals. you can order platters of foods and share them with your friends on the table.. me n my gf ordered 3 platters of lamb, octopus and quail, topped off with a greek salad and dips and pita bread for entree and it was easily the best restaurant meal that ive ever had :D

Yeah the Cafe Primo anit too bad been to the one on Anzac Hwy and also in Norwood.
Like stiffy said Sammy's down at the marina is darn good:thumbsu:

Agreed, also on a side night, the bread on their menu is entitled "Coopers Sparkling Ale." That one always brings up a wry smile!:thumbsu:
Platia, a Greek restaurant on Magill Rd. is always worth checking out, not just for the amazing array of delicious meat, but for the high likelihood of spotting Nathan Basset, who as far as I can tell lives at the place.
I always take potential missus' to Sammy's on the Marina. It's my tradition.
If they are lucky enough for me to see them again, they pay for the rest of the relationship...everything.
Good Life Pizza on Hutt St. Yummiest organic pizza, made with local ingredients of course :) Their dessert, filthy rich mmmm very good :thumbsu:

I like Thai, so I like places like Indochine at the Bay and LemonGrass in Rundle Street.
Belair countermeals cane the Royal Oak's but the actual restaurant is far better at the Clarry.

My fiance and I regulary go to hilltop Vietnamese at O'Halloran Hill, it is nothing fancy, its a small family owed and run restaurant. However it is always packed, I have never seen the place not full or close to it, doesnt matter what night. The food is simple, but it is good and cheap. They must make a killing out of it.

One of the best restaurant meals I have had in ages is at La Tombola on Unley rd. Have eaten there 3 or 4 times now and is always excellent.
Tony also knows his wines and is a great host.
As for cafe's...Cafe Polazzo at Norwood has always been very good.
Not a big Thai eater but the guys at work swear by Pi Rai Thai at the city end of Unley Road.
Personally...hans me a bloody good cut of steak cooked properly !!!
Have also heard good reports on Louissianna Tavern opened in Elizabeth.
Yes....I do get about ;)

your probably lucky you weren't just given the goon bag instead... :D
I am not a real fussy eater...but I have found the Cafe Primo's aren't a patch on most other cafe's. I would much prefer an independant than go somewhere that is over franchised and therefore the margins cut to the bone.

If money is no object(i.e. someone else is shouting) you can't go past Alphutte on Pulteney St, it has a great wine selection first class food and service and isn't a huge restaurant so you can hear what others on your table are talking about, it's very popular so you must book. I can also endorse an earlier post re Skillogalee in the Clare Valley, if you're up that way it's a must see.

Here are some stars of the game...
Chicken Parmigiana: Gilbert Street Hotel, Adelaide
Yiros: Savvas Yiros, Malvern
Pizza: Papa Mia's Wood Oven Pizza, Colonel Light Gardens
Steak: Daniel O'Connell Hotel, Nth Adelaide
The curries at the Bombay Bicycle Club go alright. Nothing too fancy but good value for a pub meal.
Alphutte is pretty good yeah. Urban Bistro has decent, different food, but is quite pricey. I dont mind it though. Awesome breakfast.
Cant beat the Daniel O'Connell for a parmy.

Went to Primo Salisbury, meal was fine, white wine was given without a chiller and a dirty glass
Throw in the $9 movie ticket for purchasing a main meal. Good night out for $25 bucks or so.
Ive been to numerous Primo's the North side of town (TTP, Munno Para, Mawson Lakes, Salisbury, Rundle STreet), and am yet to have a bad meal. Only thing that shits me is when they put the bloody chips underneath my piece of meat!!!! I like to eat my meat with no extra side taste (apart from the sauces/gravy), as do many people I have dined there with.
One of the many gorgeous chicks that work at TTP Primo, gave everyone at my table a good look (not purporsely :() down her tank top bending over to pick up a serviette...I swear we saw all the way to her belly!

Hahaha! :D
The best seafood I have had is Scampi's at Glenelg. I had a seafood platter there once and everything was cooked perfectly and the quality was superb.
But by far and away my favorite would have to be the Pink Pig on O'Connell st in North Adelaide. There specialty is the ribs and i guarantee you wont be disappointed.
Pink Pigs ribs were good. Dont order the steak though. We went there in a group of 5 once, two of us ordered steaks, one rare, one medium...they both came out resembling as well done a steak as ive ever seen. Id hate to see what their well done steaks are like.

Good taste - they're all good. That Blue and White Cafe has been there forever, but it does a mean steak sanger as well and really good fish and chips.
Gauchos do superb steak as does the Cork and Cleaver at Glenunga.
If you can get someone else to pay the bill go the garlic prawns there for an entree and rib eye fillet steak for the main.

Just back from Enotecca Cucina and I must say my desert of chocolate praline cone, orange salad and honeycombe was delicious.
My dad got his favourite again for desert - Affogatto with Benedictine! The waiting staff cringe every time he orders it as the cost of the Benedictine alone is almost the cost of the whole Affogatto. :D

Morska Vila at Henley Beach overlooking the sea has delicious seafood platters amongst other meals - quality & quantity
its a Croatian restaurant/cafe with a mediterranean flavour - you can sit outside and watch the girls (or blokes)
red hot brazillian charcoal grill. 10/10.. a hidden gem in adelaide, located on gouger street.
if youre looking for something a bit different with a superb range of meats.. and have a rather large appetite i cant recommend this place enough :D
theres a range of meals u can choose from but the best one to go is the all u can eat option, where your given for starters a bowl of freshly cooked brazillian style hot crispy chips and salads. then the main course begins. the waiters come out with a range of meats including pork spare ribs, chicken breast, lamb, pork, and a few others and bring it to u fresh from the spit.. you can either say yes or no and this continues throughout the night until ur bursting at the seams :D the meat is top notch and very reasonably priced at $32 all u can eat.
highly recommend it :D (i sound like an advert)

Agree - a friends dad has his 50th birthday dinner their about 8 months ago and the food is just divine. The prices of the food isn’t that different (in comparison) to the same in the city. But it is well priced.
But I agree with what you have said other than the Lyndoch bakery but there is nothing wrong with a good pie or pastry from a good bakery. That ones just not very good IMO.

What I really like about Lyndoch bakery is their Streusel Kuchen (German cake), which is very authentic tasting. I always buy some whenever we go past there.

You will NEVER find a better Yiros than Savvas.
Have you been to the one on Hindley St. I think its called Yannis ( same side as Mojo's and the World's End in the west part of Hindley St. All their meat is cooked over the coals, bloody fantastic.
Not sure if Savvas is cooked over the coals but ever since I moved back from Melbourne I have refused to eat a Yiros unless the meat is cooked that way. The whole upright electric/gas rotisserie is just not up to scratch!!
If you want somewhere a little more sophisticated I recommend
Thai - Tongue Thai'd on Henley Beach Rd (Saw Goodie there enjoying a meal one night so its gotta be good:cool:). Thai Orchard at Henley Square is pretty nice as well.
Contemporary Cuisine - Stella's @ Henley Square or Lenzerheide on Belair Rd
Chinese - Ying Chow's on Gouger St (not really sophisticated but the food is great!!)
Steaks - Gaucho's on Gouger St
Indian - Urban India on Henley Beach rd or Spice Kitchen on Kensington Rd
Italian - 10 Cucina E bar on O'Connell.

Went to Vietnam Restaurant tonight. Luuurrrve it. Their entrees are the best and a lot of people seem happy just ordering big serves of three of their specialty dishes which are BBQ Quails, Warm Seafood Vermicelli Salad and make your own cold rolls.
The make your own cold rolls, with Prawn and Pork meat + all the herbs/salad is divine.
Great place. Highly recommend. Gotta book though.

First genuine laugh out loud post in 2008 for me.:D
Gauchos is the only place to go for a decent steak.
My favourite eating place used to be the Grange Jetty Kiosk as the atomosphere and service were fantastic. It has now changed to cafe style eating though and is just average in all respects other than the location which is still the best in Adelaide.
For Italian, I really like Ciao on Pirie Street or Boticelli's on Flinders.
Union Hotel make a really nice Paella but I must say its usually far too busy there.
Blue and White Cafe best takeaway in Adelaide. Give me and AB any day. Is Tony still there? Havn't been in for a while.

It was good but then so are many other chinese / vietnamese places. The Imperial Room is a chinese / vietnamese combination.

Its definitely up there in my books. As the old saying goes...once bitten, twice shy.
You seem to have good taste in food so if you like chinese and are in Melbourne for a crows game take the time to check out the Flower Drum. You will pay through the nose but it can't be beat, the service is unrivalled and the food is to die for. Make sure you book well in advance (which shouldn't be a problem if you work your trip around the crows draw)
Maccas West Tce goes alright

Possibly, but it is a chinese restaurant. Must say I didn't like it at all. The Imperial Room, just a bit further down the road on the otherside is the chinese that I compare all other chinese restaurants against. Their pork spare ribs in plum sauce are divine according to my taste buds.
yeah the name is definitely misleading. their problem is that they've got over 100 meals on the menu so i can't see how they can possibly make them all to perfection. but, I'm somewhat of a regular there and I've only been disappointed in the food on one occasion. they're dirt cheap too :thumbsu:

red hot brazillian charcoal grill. 10/10.. a hidden gem in adelaide, located on gouger street.
if youre looking for something a bit different with a superb range of meats.. and have a rather large appetite i cant recommend this place enough :D
theres a range of meals u can choose from but the best one to go is the all u can eat option, where your given for starters a bowl of freshly cooked brazillian style hot crispy chips and salads. then the main course begins. the waiters come out with a range of meats including pork spare ribs, chicken breast, lamb, pork, and a few others and bring it to u fresh from the spit.. you can either say yes or no and this continues throughout the night until ur bursting at the seams :D the meat is top notch and very reasonably priced at $32 all u can eat.
highly recommend it :D (i sound like an advert)
the 'tiser food & wine lift-out had it 10th on their top 10 "spicy" restaurants in adelaide list. i'm trying my best to check out the whole 10, so should be checking that one out in the not-too-distant future.
if anyone is interested, they had the top 10 as follows (some nice places on the list IMO)
1- beyond india, o'connell st nth adelaide
2- ying chow, gouger st city
3- thuy linh, jetty rd glenelg
4- bhaji on the beach, seaview rd henley beach
5- the himalayan kitchen, melbourne st nth adelaide
6- sagarmatha, payneham rd stepney
7- tongue thai'd, henley beach rd mile end
8- woks happ'ning, hutt st city
9- my yen, belair rd hawthorn
10- red hot charcoal grill, gouger st city
i'm a HUGE fan of hot food, i'd eat it every night if my girlfriend didn't complain about the heat so often! but i'm still working up the courage to try the habanero chilli's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habanero) i've grown in my backyard this summer. the videos on youtube of people screaming in pain after eating just one have made me a little hesitant

I went to Kublai Khan (Mongolian) Saturday night with a few friends for dinner, the place is fantastic. :thumbsu::thumbsu:
You walk up to the cooking area and pick your choice of Ingredients and the chief cooks it as you wait. Must say it was difference but bloody nice food as well.
It was just off Glen Osmond road. I think its just down the road from the Tap Inn.

I amte of mine loves that place, going there for his birthday in a cioule of weeks. I dont mind it, but on a busy night you spend so much time waiting in line, you cant get a decent conversation going, plus I like to be served when I go out.
But it does taste good.

I don't get why the name is misleading?? or considered Japanese?? considering My Yen are chinese words. Anyway been to My Yen and Ying Chow, and most of the chinese on Gouger Street. IMHO most of the XXX Chows (Ky Chow, Ying Chow Ty Chow etc etc )taste the same and are fairly good. Cafe Kowloon likewise taste the same and Easte Taste prettty much taste the same as well. I could quite happily eat at any of those if after chinese.
Thai: Used to be Nu's Thai on gouger when Nu was actually still working there. He was a featured chef on the Food Lovers guide to Australia shown on SBS. He has since moved to Sydney and the food no longer taste the same. Star of SIAM is always a safe choice though.
I'm not a fan of the Gauchos, and much prefer Norbertos or even that other Argentinean on rundle street (forget the name).
Someone mentioned vietnamese, the only vietnames I eat is the Pho (beef noodle soup) and if you are willing to ignore the bad service and surroundings the Pho in the western suburbs is amazing. After a big night out theres nothing like a big bowl of pho to cure that hangover.
For greek, I used to go to the Greek on Halifax, but would love some suggestions from people.
Theres so much Italian food around Adelaide, and most of it (in my uneducated opinion) taste pretty good to me. Latratts, Amalfis??
Lenzerhide and Alphuttes are very nice and Auge on grote and SOHO on melbourne street are great places to take a girl on date.
Theres so many places though and I could go on forever. I personally think Adelaide is blessed with very nice selection of fine restaurants and authentic food and yes I have lived in Melbourne and Syndey, selection might be greater but quality is harder to find.

check out estia mate. best greek food restaurant in SA IMO, you can choose several different platters of food that you can all share together and the food is brilliant
Used to live in Adelaide until January 2002, went down in June last year and The Brompton is a lovely place to eat at. Nice staff and great meals. As a kid I loved The Lockelys and The Rex Hotel.
