Just to let everyone know, the official Geelong website has changed it's address from www.gfc.com.au to www.catsfc.com.au

Here's the new link below:

Official Geelong Football Club website:
www.catsfc.com.au

You would have thought they'd put some kind of redirection in place!!

Go Cats!!

Definitely blame Telstra for that.

Thanks for the update nonetheless, SeinDude... I have just bookmarked it.

Cheers,

A good mystery this one.

I would be interested to find out the story behind it. The problem appears to have been that the domain gfc.com.au has been redelegated away from the Telstra DNS servers. The DNS server that it has gone to does not have the correct entries and therefore when people went to gfc.com.au, they were going to a non-existant server and if they went to www.gfc.com.au it was the wrong server. The DNS server is run by Thinktech in Geelong.

So who shifted it?

Well not Telstra, they may be incompetent but they don't actually have the authority to shift it. You need to be either the main contact or the tech contact on the registry entry, and like every other club (except the unofficial bombersfc.com.au), these contacts are either officials of the club or their IT reps. If I was a betting man, I would like to put money on a guy by the name of Greg Jarman at Thinktech of 43 McKillop Street, Geelong having something to with this. I could just ring him on 03 5225 0099, but that would spoil the fun. I also noted that his aunic handle was modified on the 19th of June, a pretty good sign that he was making changes on the registry just at the time of the site going arse-up, allowing for the fact that DNS changes take a few days to flow through the Internet.

So why was it changed? a simple mistake? Maybe, or was it some kind of protest or dispute between Telstra and the GFC? The domain name after all always remained the property of the GFC.

This is unlike the name of catsfc.com.au which is a name belonging to a business with a registered business name of catsfc and a address in Spring Street (ie Telstra). This name was registered last December.

By the way, all the information here, including Greg Jarman's details are/were available in the public forum of the Internet.

My guess is that it was an accidental change and when it was spotted it was too late to fix, as no changes have been allowed to .com.au domain names for the last few days due to a change in the way in which the .com.au names are handled.

I've noticed that the IP address for www.gfc.com.au has been corrected and the official site is now working through that. It had up until today been giving the wrong IP address. The URL gfc.com.au returns nothing and goes nowhere still. I suspect that Thinktech need a lesson on how to administer their DNS servers.
