Clarke 'the story of the year', says Malthouse

COLLINGWOOD coach Mick Malthouse says Martin Clarke’s rapid rise to prominence in AFL is “the biggest football story of the year”.
Speaking before the Magpies’ preliminary final clash with Geelong, Matlhouse said, “There’s been a lot of stories in football this year but if that’s not the biggest or the grandest story in football …
“It’s just one of those freak things that a kid, this time last year, was playing with a round ball and a different sport in a different country and probably watching a bit of Sydney (Swans), and here he is now playing in a finals game with four clubs left in the competition,” Malthouse said on Friday.
Clarke exploded onto the scene in round 12 this year against the Sydney Swans, racking up an impressive 20 possessions on debut.
His good form has continued throughout the season and the 19-year-old again managed 20 touches in his side’s semi-final win over the reigning premiers, the West Coast Eagles, last weekend.
However his coach said that was hads impressed him most about Clarke was his attitude.
“By his reckoning, he’s underachieved. He hasn’t said that to me, but I know when I met him in January he was that keyed up to play on Anzac Day (round five) that I just thought, ‘it’s okay to have a bit of confidence but where’s this guy coming from?’
“He just couldn’t come to grips with the fact that he wasn’t going to get a game. As it turns out when he did get a game he accepted the fact because he was still a few weeks off but that’s how much confidence this kid has in his ability to play the game.
“He wanted the big stage… if that’s not one of the all time good stories in football I’ll be surprised because it’s just outstanding to think that has made it.”
Martin Clarke isn’t the only Irishman training with the Magpies at the moment.
Armagh’s Kevin Dyas is undergoing a month’s trial with Collingwood.
He is expected to return home next week when he will discuss the possibility of a move to Australia with his family.
Malthouse said the Pies were happy to sign the teenager but it depended on his willingness to commit.
“He’s got to want to be part of it, and if he does that we’ll have two mad Irishmen at the club.”

Martin Clarke wins NAB AFL Rising Star nomination

News
IRISH youngster Martin Clarke has been rewarded for his stunning start to his AFL career with the round 13 nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star award.
The talented Magpie burst onto the scene against the Sydney Swans in round 12, and backed up on Sunday with an often-inventive three-goal performance against the Hawks. He becomes the second Irish player to win a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination after premiership defender Tadhg Kennelly in 2002.
Clarke, 19, has been described as "remarkable" by coach Mick Malthouse after picking up the game – and the specific skills required to play it – in less than 12 months.
He had 20 possessions in his first game against the Swans in round 12, and 19 against Hawthorn on Sunday.
"It's definitely unexpected [to be nominated],” Clarke told afl.com.au. “My focus was to get into the side and then once I got in, I just wanted to be clear on what role I had to play with Collingwood."
"I don't think I've done anything too special to get the nomination ahead of some great players. It's definitely a great honour for me."
Clarke said his parents have been extremely supportive of his move to Australia, and have already been to visit their son in his new surroundings of the Magpies’ Lexus Centre.
"At first, they were a bit conservative about me coming out to Australia, but once they've got a feel for how much I'm enjoying it and how good a club Collingwood is, they've just been really supportive," he said.
"I think my brother and sister plan to come over too."
Incredibly, Clarke was informed of his nomination exactly one year after he arrived in Australia. The Magpies flew him out to undertake a month's trial with the oval ball in July 2006.
It’s been a big 12 months for the teenager – for starters, he's the new cult hero for the black and white army – but he's just glad all the hard work has began to show dividends.
"A lot has changed in the year, but I've worked hard and the coaches and resources at Collingwood have been first class," he said.
"I've just listened to all the advice I've got from coaches and players and worked hard and did a bit extra after training. It's starting to come together now."
Clarke joins the following players to be nominated for the award so far this season: Paddy Ryder (Essendon), Cameron Wood (Brisbane Lions), Tom Hawkins (Geelong), Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood), Joel Selwood (Geelong), Ricky Petterd (Melbourne), Jess Smith (Kangaroos), Shaun Higgins (Western Bulldogs), Mitch Clark (Brisbane Lions), Bryce Gibbs (Carlton), Shannon Hurn (West Coast) and Robbie Gray (Port Adelaide).

Wikipedia Information
Martin 'Marty' Clarke (born November 13, 1987) is a footballer from Northern Ireland who plays for Collingwood in the Australian Football League.
Gaelic football Career
Martin was an outstanding Gaelic football talent. He starred for Down Minors, leading them to the 2005 All Ireland Championship and also played a large part in bringing his school, St Louis, Kilkeel, to 2 MacRory Cup finals in 2005 and 2006, and also to a MacLarnon Cup and an All Ireland Colleges 'B' title in as many years.
He played senior football with his club, An Riocht. He was a centre half forward. He was first alerted to AFL scouts in the 2005 McRory Cup final, at which the Australian U17 International Rules team was present.
He was invited to an AFL training camp in July 2006. He impressed scouts even more and on 22 August 2006 signed a contract with Collingwood Football Club, becoming the first ever truly international rookie for the club.
When not on display at the MCG Clarke enjoys a tipple and hearing the banter from the squad back home. In October 2007 Martin returned home for a three week holiday and helped his Club An Riocht lift the clubs first ever division one league title, defeating Kilcoo in the final. Martin scored 2-1 in that final, which was played under lights in Pairc Esler, Newry on 26th October 2007.
AFL career
Clarke has been dubbed by Collingwood assistant coach Guy McKenna as "the Irish equivalent of Nathan Buckley" - high praise indeed. Clarke is a quick midfielder who has adapted extremely well to the oval ball, and will become one to watch in the coming seasons. On Friday February 16, 2007 he made his AFL debut in a preseason game with Sydney Swans at the North Sydney Oval. He had an outstanding game. This led Pies assistant coach Gavin Brown to say.....
"He was probably the stand-out player from the point of view that he had never played a game of Aussie Rules before. "It just showed that he has an enormous amount of will and want, and he had put in a lot of hard work. It was fantastic for him today - a good step.
Clarke made his debut in a premiership season game on Saturday, June 23, 2007, also against the Swans. Again, his game was outstanding, with 20 possessions in front of a crowd of 64,222 at Telstra Stadium in Sydney. Some sources have even called his performance "one of the best debuts in the history of the game".
His second game came in Round 13 against Hawthorn on July 1, 2007. In another promising display, Clarke picked up nineteen possessions and three goals, playing on former brownlow medallist Shane Crawford in a sell out crowd in front of 50,248 at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne. For his 3 goal near best on ground performance earned him a nomination in the NAB AFL Rising Star award in just his second game and a year to the date that he first arrived in Melbourne.

A Savo Flashback to Round 12 - Marty's first match
From the moment I heard my man was going to debut, I was pumped all week, talking up the great man to all my mates, telling them how good he was/is going to be, and he didnt let me down. I must admit, Marty did look like he was shitting himself before the match but he did say he doesnt get nervous, so I will take his word fr it :p
You all have seriously no idea on how excited I was that I was going to see Marty play his first ever game of AFL football, pity I couldn't be there :(
The first time I saw Marty work his magicin the flesh was against Melbourne or St Kilda, I can't remember.
Anyways back to his debut, after talking him up all week, Marty delivered exactly what I was expecting, a bloody awesome debut, picking up 20 disposals :D
I just loved seeing Marty out there, just makes life worth living :D:D
So glad he agreed to come and play AFL

A quote from Strauchanie's book 'Bryan Strauchan: My Story' about Marty.
"43. (18) Martin Clarke - A sad day when a bloke from Ireland gets a game for Collingwood ahead of Strauchanie. Honestly, what does he have that I haven't, besides a voice that's impossible to understand? I was at the canteen behind him once & I didn't know if he was ordering a quiche or singing 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. When he was finished, Strauchanie started singing 'Hooray Bloody Hooray'. Pebbles sneezed Fanta.

NAB CUP - Round 1 vs. Adelaide
9th of Feburary had Marty back on the footy field sporting a new hair cut.
He started off very slow, only getting a few touches in the first half.
Marty had abit of a quiet match but still managed to pick up 16 touches.
Marty's disposal was abit poorer than last year but it was only a pre-season match that means nothing.
7 Kicks, 9 Handballs and 3 Marks were Marty's stats for the pre-season clash
Looking forward to seeing him in action more in 08
The Out of Africa experience probably raddled his Gaelic constitution, poor lad. He'll be right.:thumbsu:

A fitting tribute to Marty from MM.
COLLINGWOOD coach Mick Malthouse says he was delighted with the form of Irishman Marty Clarke who played his best game since last year in the Magpies thumping win over Geelong at the MCG on Friday night.
Malthouse revealed he had been concerned about the young backman playing Gaelic football in Ireland over the break.
“I was a little but worried about Marty Clarke when he came back to us (in pre-season) because he went over for a holiday and came back with a championship cup, so the ‘rest’ was playing football," Malthouse said after the match
"I was a bit worried about burn-out in the young boy, but it is not the case. He has a fantastic resolve and he has terrific stamina and can outlast most of our players.”
Malthouse noted it should be remembered that Clarke is playing just his second year of Australian football.
“He has to re-evaluate how he plays the game. We take so much for granted. That was his first year of footy last year and we just assume that he can step in and do it again," Malthouse said.
"Every club picks holes in people’s games and no doubt with Marty they worked out a few things. We needed to look at that and he has come out the other side pretty well.
Malthouse said he was “concerned, but not overly concerned” when Geelong scored three goals at the start of the third term and looked like coming back.
“You always get concerned with the top side. They kicked 7.8 last week – I don’t think we had the balance right and you can’t afford not to have good balance against Geelong.
"For that brief period I don’t think we touched the football -- they kicked the first one and that was the sign that perhaps I should have changed something up.”
