Read the article on Dean Bailey in the Hun today and couldn't help but think that the appointment and consequent success of an relatively unknown coach in Clarkson has set the trend for other clubs today.

Makes my skin crawl how most of the media and other supporters mocked our very deliberate recruitment process which Dunstall and co refused to compromise despite the availability of Wallace and Eade and Eade at the time. We got hammered for "missing out" on two highly regarded coaches who surprise surprise are not fairing too well at their respective clubs today.

When we appointed Clarkson I must admit I was shocked as I didn't even remember him as a player. After his appointment though, I remember reading how Clarkson was appointed after a series of presentations to the club which simply blew everyone else out of the water. It became apparant to the board that he was highly motivated, meticulous in his approach, very well learned (two degrees) and paid his own way to travel abroad to study other codes and their methods of success.

Right from the very start he wiped the slate clean and identified our very apparant lack of KPP depth, hardness at the ball, and poor footskills.

He copped very public criticism for his initial recruiting strategies (Roughie over Tambling, Lewis at 7, the trading of Thompson, Hay etc yet look at the profound difference this move has made?

Strangely though, the media still love to attack him despite his succcess - see the pathetic article written by Trevor Grant only days ago having a go at him for recruiting DEW. Last year when we struggled mid year due to injuries and the young boys starting to tire, the media began calling for his head yet this year Wallace was untouched despite leading the Tigers to a wooden spoon???

Leads me back to the article on Bailey today. Kept waiting to read the bit about Hawthorn setting the benchmark for appointing unknown coaches who as players were lacked talent but where hard at it..of course they talked about Sheedy, Malthouse, but you guessed it....donoughts..

Doesn't matter thouigh, we all now it's true and the facts speak for themselves. Since we appointed Clarko, look at the teams who have followed suit- St Kilda - Ross Lyon, Essendon - Matthew Knights, Melbourne Dean Bailey.

Have no doubt that Bailey traded Travis Johnston for a first round pick based on what the Hawks did a few yrs ago with Thompson, Hay, Rawlings etc.

We all know that the trend for appointing yound unproven AFL coaches has been set and copied by other clubs. A little recognition by the media though wouldn't go astray..

I totally agree, I didnt have any idea on who Alistair Clarkson was when I got the news reading the paper on the way home from a school camp. I also believe teams are becoming more confident in untried assistant coaches. Even though Ross Lyon had a bit of hype around him being the mastermind for the Sydney game plan, the fact is teams are now looking for inovative ideas rather then tried and true coaches who may not cope with the everchanging styles of the game.

Yeah, good post.

Seems the media are still looking for him (and Hawthorn) to trip up.

My view is AC will have the last laugh.

I hope so.

I agree.

The media are looking for anything they can.

Their biggest problem is , there are some great people involved at the club who dont like to fail.

I think the club , as a whole , will have the last laugh.

We are in a very strong position on and off the field.

Keep looking journo's.

A nice post, enjoyable to read.

Media applause is a fickle thing, and if you are being patted on the back by the media you have to be careful the hand doing the patting is not hilding a kinfe because you will be knifed at the first opportunity.

So be careful what you wish for.

Great post ng.
It doesn't matter if the hawks set the trend and everyone else follows. In fact what we did was very smart and it worked for us. We could very possibly be playing off in a few GF's sooner than first thought.

Also I will add great post NG, thoroughly agree.
