View Full Version : PSD Pick 7 - Patrick McGinnity

A local boy from Claremont who plays primarily as a midfielder/back flanker. Played in the u18s and was most noted for completely tagging Trent Cotchin out of the game. Was unlucky not to originally be drafted. A surprise pick up by us really.

Welcome Patty :thumbsu:

Happy with that selection. He was unlucky to not go in the National Draft.

Now lets hope we get a ruckman in the rookie draft.

This is from the Drafting & Trading board for those like me that don't know much about him other than the Cotchin thing.

Paddy McGinnity (Rov, HBF, BP) - 18 February 1989, 182cm 75kg. WA/Claremont
"Weaver: His one-man dismantling of blue-chipper Cotchin will have seen him become a big-ole ink-stain shaped blob on everyone's radar. Deceptively quick, obviously disciplined and competitive. Showed stamina and reasonable skills with the footy. Dean Polo got himself drafted early on the back of some elite tagging at the Nationals. If McGinnity has any sort of Club form behind him he too could get his name called.
"
"Recruiter 1: He was hard at-it and played in a similar vein to the traditional Victoria Metro midfielder. He refuses to give-up the ball with any ease. While he is not the flashiest player going around, he definitely has the level of commitment required for us to follow him in future matches
"
"Recruiter 2: An impressive type of player who was in and under at most opportunities. He rarely lost a one-on-one contest – a player who like Rhys Palmer, set the tempo for Western Australia.
"
"Kevin Sheehan: A medium-sized midfielder with good pace and ability at the fall of the ball, McGinnity can play a run-with role and he has the ability to win his own footy. He was very impressive in Western Australia's win over Vic Metro in the first division-one match, which was his debut at under-age level for his state.
"
"ant555: Paddy McGinnity – 182cm, 75kg-Claremont- One of the lesser knowns of the all star WA midfield but deserves a mention in his own right. Took Cotchin out of the game in their game against Vic Metro while still winning his own footy. Can run with opponents all day and has good speed. Skills are good and he can win the footy at clearances. His tagging was very disciplined.
"
Grub29: Showed enough in the midfield at the champs to be of real value at this pick. Has a very good motor and has pace as well and has shown he can not only shut down an opponent but win the footy as well.Ideal "bloods" type.

Those comments are all so positive that I am surprised that he wasn't picked up earlier ! Midfield tagger to help Selwood and Stenglein. I like it !:) (Although I thought that we would go for either a small forward to replace Sampi or a defender to replace Chick., or even a ruck prospect)

Happy with this pick.

I thought we might have taken him in the National Draft with pick 22(shows how little I know I guess) and was surprised he didn't get selected at all.

He sounds like the type of midfielder we have a lot of success in developing.

Quite a few posters on the Freo board were keen on this kid too, but they'll have to settle for Head.

I like head too, but like McGinnity i think i prefer to be more anal in our draft selections

good pickup. He's not ready to go right now though, will get a couple of games over the next year or two hopefully. seems like a very good team player, was happy to play his role for WA in the champs, and played it very well, not flashy at all but very solid.
He will be absolutely rapt after missing out in the draft to now get a chance and not have to move states!

We've lost our "flashy" midfielders and seem to have replaced them with more solid, hard working types. A change of tactics in the wind for next season ?

Must be aiming at a ruckman in the rookie draft (otherwise I'll be quite suprised)

Another tagger by the sounds of things. Could free up Stinger to play more of an attacking role either that or we may be even more defensive by taking players out of the game. As a few people have mentioned we may be changing our gameplan/style.

So Embers prefers us to get anal while Fremantle get head? :D

Great get here. Was probably in Claremonts 2-3 best players in the GF. Has a bit of pace about him, though, from all reports. Not listed as slow ,like Arrowsmith is, but let's face it most of us couldn't keep up with them anyway, so who am I to call someone slow?

Not sure if it's a change in direction of tactics, rather that this is what's available in this draft. There seemed lots of good inside mids, and very, very few x-factor, game breaker types, so we took best available, rather than look for a particular type.

mcginty was an AA NAB cup selection...you would think that all players who made All Australian from the NAB cup would get drafted

We have to remember these guys drafted this year will take 2-3 years to break into the side, I'm sure we don't plan for 2007 draftees to change next years game plan, they are more as understudies to the established players who play similar positions.

McGinnity as an 18yr old will most likely get Stiga / A Selwoods roles in 2-3 years from now.

Masten and Ebert will be on ball / half forwards in 2-3 years and I see S Selwood as our small backman.

We still have a very solid midfield and if the forward half can eventually get better we will be in the PShip zone once again.

From what I remember in the state champs, McGinnity was defintly able to get his hands on the ball. Also some of you might remember the almost footy legends in which a claremont player ran 100m "the other way" that is Patrick Mcginnity.

yeah he did make AA- unfortunately (or not) all you seem to be able to find on him is his job of tagging cotchin out of his game and ending up with more posessions than him.

Looking at the SA result, he kicked 2 goals in that game as well, so doesn't suggest a pure tagger only.

Not only does Arrowsmith sound like he was over looked like Priddis because of pace (though earlier and taller) but he kinda looks like him as well.

I remember that, all his team mates yelling at him was hillarious, then he just turned it right over no closer to goal than where he started running from.

Lets hope you guys get a few games at the SCG where it is most effective. Subi may not be too kind to a "grind it out" style midfield.

Masten, Ebert, J-Mac, Selwood, McGinnity etc are not slow. They just aren't super quick.

As long as they run hard, pace isn't the vital ingrediance

Hitting the ball at full pace is the right way to cover up any percieved lack of speed I've heard.

Would you agree?

Both from Trinity, as was Jacky who went to Adelaide, I take it you attend Trinity Dobbo (only by describing the school as TC) but im fairly sure Kanye Lucas is ineligble to be drafted next year.
