View Full Version : 2007 Rookie list selections
Pick 12 - Lewis Stevenson - Bottom aged winger that plays for Claremont. 185cm and 82kg. Likes to score a goal by the sounds of it. Sounds like another Matt Rosa
Pick 28 - Ashley Arrowsmith - Winger very much in the Aaron Fiora mode. Great kick but is said to lack pace hence why he was overlooked. We just need to give him the Matthew Priddis treatment. Steal
Pick 43- Will Sillivan - Smart mobile ruckman who plays as a pinch hitting forward at times too. A bit of a smaller ruckman it seems nowadays at 202cm :D but he rucks none the less. Is very much a project player it sounds like
Pick 55 - Callum Wilson - I rate him VERY highly. I wouldnt of mind us taking him with our PSD pick never mind pick 55 in the rookie draft. Plays fulback for South Freo and does it VERY well. Plays forward too and does it very well. Steal. Hes a KPP but hes a good one
Pick 59 - Beau Wilkes - We all know about him. One more year for him. Pretty popular chap around the club so the boys wil be happy
Pick 62 - Ryan Davis - The NSW utiliy/wingman. Scholarship player impressed so we pre selected him with our last pick. Alot of tall midfielders for us and one ruckman is nice.
In summary. Two midfielders in Stevenson and Arrowsmith. Both outsidish and like it on a wing. Arrowsmith was rated very highly whereas Stevenson with a kickass first name like Lewis must have something going for him. Two KPPS. Both versatile and play both forward and defence. We know of Wilkes but Wilson was a steal. Was tipped last year to go in the top 50 but was somehow skipped by everyone. Had a great year in the WAFL and we noticed it. Project ruckman in Will Sullivan and a utility in Davis makes for a pretty well rounded rookie list
Overall great result. One more KPP then I would of liked though (im sorry Beau but you aint Wilson) but its hard to complain. For those wondering. Beau Wilkes is allowed one more year. It makes sense because it would mean we have a spot free for next year to use in the rookie draft. Im not too sure but Davis might be on a one year deal too?

who is Sullivan?

Will Sullivan
Strengths:
*Very good tap works – hits teammates
*Good leap and timing in the ruck
*Around the ground work is okay
*Marking is good
Concerns:
*Kicking is okay not good so needs to be worked with
*Not quick at all.
Comment:
Sullivan is a very good tap ruckman – both his tap work and timing of his leap has helped him a lot in this area. If he works on his around the ground play and kicking he could become a very good player.

sexcellent, we needed a ruck, cheers
umm...wilson?
Ok embers, you got the hook-up, your gonna have to draft profile all these lads because a few im sure we havent heard of...by we, i mean i :D
Pick 55 - Callum Wilson - YES YES OH YES. Best young KPPin the WAFL last year. Brilliant back and Brilliant forward too. Hes a brilliant player. Very good. Yes hes a KPP but best KPP in the rookie draft. Cant believe we got him!!!!!!!!!!!. Look around to see how highly I rate him

Sounds like a good old-fashioned ruckman.

B. Wilkes and R. Davis

Ryan Davis
Is Davis the NSW kid? Haven't heard of the other 2, where's LTAM, Sinepari, TOA, Megladon etc when you need them.
Yep. No idea what ass you pulled those other 2 names from. Beau Wilkes was our other choice
Yeah sorry about that was looking at a few different pages and took the wrong info :o

Jeez Im behind time, at least we got a ruckman in the rookie draft and I see we we didnt even pick up any recycled players in the PSD. Stocked up on a fair few midfielders now in the hard working type not the flashy quick type but they all still look alright and at least we arnt lacking (esp in the KPP). Sullivan, Stevenson and Wilson I havent heard much of, just have to have a look around now.
All in all it looks like we did alright :thumbsu: :)

We MUST have the youngest list in the comp now. All I can say is the host families may need to add a extra room to there houses. How do so few know of Wilson. If you read the paper you will find him in the South Freos bests column every week.

Thing is I dont get that paper (or very rarely) but yes we have a very young list now. A lot of developing players esp in the KPP department.

Well think of Wilson as Adam Hunter. A swingman who plays defence but can bag a few goals too.

Hey Embers, i noticed u saying that Wilkes (despite ppl questioning) was retained.
I am happy with this, however isnt the maximum a player can be on the rookie list is 2 years initial period + 1 more year.
Didn't he stay for those 3 already or am i being 1 year too quick?

There is no maximum/minimum years anymore. Its all to do with a players age. Since Wilkes is only 21 he still has 1 more year for which he can be rookied. Cut off age is 22. Wilkes was picked up as a bottom aged player hence why he gets a extra year and others cant. Ashley Thornton was in a similar boat. He could of been rookied despite it being his third year but with his bung knee the club opted against it it seems

Thanks and yep shame for Ashley Thornton, he started to play ok before the 3rd year with his knee.

Hes kind of hunky. Hes no Chris Masten however
Callum is 19 now, 191cm and 92kgs but hes got a big reach which makes up for his lack of height. Too small to be a fullback at AFL level but great for a CHB/Hunter role

i cant believe arrowsmith stayed to pick 28 is the rookie. that is a steal. i grew up watching ash play. he is an absolute gun. he may have bad pace. but he has now god a coach to improve his speed. he will be an absolute star in the years to come
im really excited about Arrowsmith as well. Absolute steal!

You're right there Embers. I go to the WAFL every week and I know of Wilson's name but could not tell you what he looked like! Swans players, however, I could tell you!! Would have preferred Luke Miles myself, but what is Wilson's disposal like?

What about the newly-delisted Ashley Thornton? Damn ! Our "Ashley quota" is depleted ! Quick we need a special dispensation to pick up the best Ashley as a prority selection in next years draft !:)

Bit of info on Ash Arrowsmith
November 9th, 2007
Ashley Arrowsmith – Calder Cannons
Ht: 192 cm Wt: 89 kg
Junior position – Wing
AFL position – Half Back, Wing
Tall wingman who is a strong mark and runs all day. He doesn’t have great pace and can get caught out by the quicker players. Has had a couple of games in defence and has done ok. Likes to play outside and play the link man. His kicking is a bit of a worry as he can be prone to turnovers in some games.
Strengths: Size.; Ability to run all day; Ability to kick goals while playing on the wing
Weaknesses: Lack of pace; Kicking.
Question Marks: The lack of pace and his habit of turning it over by foot are the big queries on him.
Draft Prediction: Pick 30 plus. Someone will take him and hope they can solve his kicking problems. Could make a very good attacking half back with good size.
Stats: Average 20 possessions and kicked 26 goals in 15 regular season games..Named in best 6 times.
AND PRIOR TO DRAFT:
Ashley Arrowsmith Stars in TAC Grand Final Victory Written by Pepperama Monday, 01 October 2007 A massive congratulations goes out to Ashley Arrowsmith who not only played in the TAC Under 18s premiership team but also won the Best on Ground Medal. CALDER Cannons midfielder Ashley Arrowsmith increased his draft prospects with a best-on-ground performance in Saturday's TAC Cup grand final at the MCG.
The 18-year-old from East Keilor kicked four goals to help the Cannons to a 50-point win against the highly fancied Murray Bushrangers, 14.20 (104) to 7.12 (54).
Arrowsmith's impressive performance came on the back of an award-studded season in Victoria's premier junior football competition.
The 188cm Cannon was named in the TAC Cup Team of the Year and was selected in the Victoria Metro side in July.
Arrowsmith has now turned his attention to this week's AFL draft camp at the Australian Institute of Sport.
"The draft camp is going to be pretty demanding physically and mentally, but I'm looking forward to it," Arrowsmith said. "I guess my kicking and my endurance are going to be the strongest things I take in to the camp."
Arrowsmith and 75 other young footballers from around Australia will attend the three-day camp, which starts in Canberra tomorrow.
AFL clubs and scouts will put the next crop of potential AFL draftees through a series of intense physical tests to assess each player's speed, endurance, strength and ball skills.
Arrowsmith has already caught the eye of the Brisbane Lions and Hawthorn.
"It's been a good experience to talk to different clubs and to hear how each club goes about the draft," Arrowsmith said. "They talk about your season and where you'd fit into their club and what you need to work at."
AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan said: "Ashley makes great decisions in big games, which is what good players do."
I like the sounds of a goal kicking winger. Great height and size, just needs some pace and to improve his kicking. We will make him a gun.

I'm certainly not an expert because I've only seen Arrowsmith play once but he doesn't look anywhere near as quick as Rosa to me.

One thing you usually don't hear about Ashley is his skills. They are top quality which is why he is handy on a wing or in the forward line. The question marks lie on his pace but for him to go out and hire a sprint coach shows great determination by the young man, lets just hope he can get off the rookie list and impress like a similar curly haired young man.

In the grand final this year it was Claremont vs. Subiaco.
So Wilson wouldn't have been playing lol
EDIT: Oh u changed it to Preliminary Final. Good move.

Buggered if i know. Im not the South Freo coach. Who ended up playing on him. I know some coaches like to stick a small defender (like a Nicoski) on Smith at times to try and match him on the lead. Maybe that was the plan

Jumper numbers are on the profiles on WCE site
Lewis Stevenson - 47
Ashley Arrowsmith - 43
Will Sillivan - 40
Callum Wilson - 36
Ryan Davis - 45.
No number for Mcginnity yet
Was hoping the eagles might pick up east perths Aaron Sweet with a late rookie selection. Captained the colts and played some league matches later in the year, and couldve been another great midfield late pick-up. Still, trust the eagles recruiting staff, they are the best in the business:D
