stab in the dark here....

young Port Magpies player in the SA squad Steve Eichler....

now there was an Eichler running around for Port in the Late 70's / Early '80s' (Andrew ?) Eichler....think he played in the 1980 premiership side IIRC.

Any relation ?

Possible father / son ?

Don't know! Depends on if the past player was actually Eichler or Eichner. The current player is Steve Eichner.

This is from an article I had at my old Rivals.net website. It explains the F/S rule a bit more:

South Australian clubs have until now been disadvantaged by the father-son rule because they have not been around that long to have players old enough to have children who are of the age to player senior football.*

That's about to change with a new rule that will allow Port Adelaide and Adelaide to draft the sons of former players from SANFL clubs.

To be eligible to be drafted to the Power, a player's father must have played 200 games for one SANFL club between 1977 and 1996.

Yesterday the AFL announced that the eligible players would be split between Port Adelaide and Adelaide with the Crows having access to sons of 200 game players from Norwood, Glenelg, Sturt and South Adelaide and the Power having access to sons of 200 game players from Port Magpies, Central District, North Adelaide, West Adelaide, Woodville and West Torrens.

Port Adelaide would have to forfeit a third round draft pick if it chooses to pick up a player under the rule. It was previously a second round pick, but the AFL has changed that ruling starting with the upcoming draft on November 25th.

The ruling is unlikely to have much effect on Port for a few years, but one player eligible under the new rule is Port Magpie midfielder Brett Ebert who is the son of Magpie legend Russell Ebert.

The draft this year has been set to a later date so it doesn't interfere with Year 12 exams, something that in the past has been a problem for potential draftees.

Brisbane, Sydney, West Coast & Fremantle will also benefit from the new father-son rule changes.

Actually found something useful on the SANFL site. All players who have played > 200 games in the SANFL. So, assuming:

a) when they say 1976 - 1996 this is all inclusive. ie all 200 games have to have been played in that time.....if someone played 180 games up to 1975 and then another 50 he would not be eligible.....eg Brian Cunninham. The ????? denote where they might have played > 200 in this period but it is hard to tell.

b) State games are not counted

problem: to qualify, those fathers need to have played the whole 200 at the one SANFL club.

How many of these actually have sons playing at an SANFL club?
Are there many likely candidates to be picked up?
