View Full Version : Expansion Western Sydney would be a better relocation the GC anyway

For any club thinking about a relocation, Western Sydney is:
- much closer to Melbourne - easier for fans to travel interstate for the odd game & less travel impact on the playing group
- less current AFL interest but 4 times population of GC & more long term growth potential (2.5 mill live west of Teltra Staduim)
- less existing allegiences to overcome
- No Southport hovering
- 10,000 seat home base approved for construction (& fully funded)
- Telstra Stadium ready to go
- no need to add gold to the jumper.

And if North are still struggling in 5 years and need to rethink: -
- working class area would suit them better
- no need to change colours (blue is very NSW)
- more practical to run a VFL side from Arden St given SFL not as strong

It is worth noting that the Kangaroos got better crowds in Sydney in 1999 than they did last year on GC.

I'm not suggesting such a move but just that there was nothing to lose by rejecting the GC as a better deal will be on offer from NSW in 5 or so years.

Having said all this I favour a new start-up club for WS, but can see North going there is things go pear shaped and the 18th team coming from Perth.

I take it you disagree helen.

Actually everything I have said is true, but you could certainly draw a different conclusion.

I'm not saying WS would be great, just that if it were Hawthorn I would prefer WS to GC.

Western Sydney is certainly a worse location than the GC.

If Hawthorn moved to WS, the likelihood of death would be far more certain than if they relocated to GC.

Its not, actually walhawk makes some fair points.

The AFL has already stated that a few years down the track they're going to push for the introduction of a team for West Sydney.

If, for instance, the whole James Brayshaw thing struggles to work and the Kangaroos are still struggling in a few years - this will definitely be an option open to them - and as walhawk correctly suggests - putting a 3rd team in Perth before the NRL or A-League expand in that city is vital.

It is probably feasible now for a 3rd team in Perth, and will definitely be feasible in 5 years time or so when the West Sydney team will be looming large.

More than possible, 9 teams in Vic, 9 teams around the rest of Australia.

The whole Victoria v The Rest thing could be getting a go again come 2015 - this time based on team. Who knows???
