Our game is in great shape it is expanding.
Rather than the bad feeling if north were to relocate now we have a new team from an exciting region.
As far I can see the worse thing would be the bickering over early draft picks and the inflationary pressures on the top players wages.
Finding the overall numbers of players should be easy enough. Even fpor 18 teams we need 12.5 % more players. If an average palyses career is 4 years then thats an extra half season for each player - easliy achieved.
They could prepare now by allowing clubs to expand lists by 5 players at the end of next season, then reduce it back to none over five years.
The new team should be given pick 1, 18, 35 etc and let them play in the qfl until the new team is ready to play
And the eighteenth team ? there will be pressure to get one asap (or as soon as the drafting situation allows)
If tasmania were smart they would be ready to fill the breach if sydney were to stumbel - they could be the white knight who saves the AFLs bacon

Lets get serious for a second, only 12.5% of AFL players at the moment are really at AFL standard and Tasmania have proven they are smart already by wooing a successful Melbourne club (Hawthorn) to provide a token AFL prescence. Early draft picks are not the means to an end (just ask ST KILDA) and if 5 more players were to be added to lists the state of play would get even worse. Take off the rose coloured shades and take a good look at the state of play MORON!
Say no to 2 more!

Only 12.5% of your brain is working at human standard
by your logic we should reduce to 2 teams because thats what 12.5% of all players comes down to - thets 100 players - you are saying the players below, say , buddy franklin arent worth a toss

Stupid statement #1. The standard is created by the players available at any given time in the competition as it is at any given time. There is not some magic line that becomes AFL standard.
Take off the rose coloured shades and take a good look at the state of play MORON!
Stupid statement #2. Just plain unneccesary. What is it with touchy North Melbourne supporters at the moment.

Basically the definition of AFL standard is the standard required to play in the AFL, therefore it would be stupid to suggest any less than 90% were below this standard, otherwise they would not survive on lists
What is it with touchy North Melbourne supporters at the moment.
I'm not touchy, I don't mind the idea at all...probably (being optimistic) because if there is 18 teams there will be not much of a chance of relocating anyone else.

What
You cannot be serious? So 87.5% of AFL players are not up to standard. Wow.

Yeah, sorry, I generalised. It was just two threads in a row capped by antagonistic North supporters. I'll pass it off as an emotional week for all :)
I'm wrapped with it personally. I think the idea of a bigger comp is great. Now they've just got to work out the best way to schedule a season.
For 18 teams, perhaps they are going to need something like 25 round seasons (minus preseason), where teams will play all other teams three times over two years (except for one opponent, whom they will only play twice). This gives, over a two year period, a home game, an away game, and a 'neutral' game that the AFL could schedule anywhere taking into account promotional purposes and split proceeds between the two teams evenly.
The year would still be scheduled so that all teams got 1/3 of games home a year (8) plus 50% from 9 shared games (which would function like 'home games' as far as memberships were concerned, but would be on neutral territory for games between interstate teams. Unless, of course, one team was willing to be bought out by another to host the game at their home (ie, Melbourne plays in Adelaide for a 75% cut of takings)....
I dunno. Don't envy the guy who has to work the scheduling out.
I agree with the original poster. It is a very exciting time to be a AFL fan.

Neutral games won't work. The way memberships are structured both teams can't be essentially on equal standing as the home team. Reserved seating packages don't allow for it as the the home team gets access to more and better seating than the away team. So how would you account for that?
If there is to be 18 teams and a 25 round season then there would more likely be a rolling fixture over 2 years where all clubs would get one year of 12 home games and one year with 13. Having said that, I would be surprised if the AFL went to a season with an odd number of games unless they went to a conference system for fixturing.

Neutral games could work (I'm not really all for them, just offering an idea)... just got to think creatively about reserved seating packages.

Calling him a Moron is an over reaction. They seemed pretty reasonable comments to me.I f no one had vision and thought of the future we would have no AFL.
As far as Tazzy goes IMO it could support its own team. The locals are footy crazy and would love their own team.
It could work, but it won't happen.
Agreed. Just hypothesising.
